12/29/2010 PALIN: "ALASKA" DOG-CLUBBING TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT

WASILLA, Alaska (CAP) - Former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is saying leaked outtake footage from her TLC reality show Sarah Palin's Alaska has been taken "out of context," particularly the scene where she clubs and skins a miniature schnauzer, mistaking it for a baby seal. "Ya know, out in the tundra things happen pretty quick," said Palin. "When that snow's comin' down, a schnauzer and a seal are basically indristinguishable."

12/24/2010 HOCKEY PLAYER OFFERS $100 K TO MOVE ELEPHANT TO SANCTUARY

Former NHL player Georges Laraque is fighting for the freedom of Lucy, the solitary elephant kept in Edmonton's Valley Zoo. Laraque has offered the city of Edmonton $100,000 if Lucy is released to a sanctuary in a warmer climate. It’s 1°F in Edmonton right now, where Georges Laraque and Lucy the elephant both live. Hockey players might not mind the cold, but Asian elephants certainly do. Lucy doesn't have a climate controlled habitat at the Valley Zoo, and the poor pachyderm has been forced to live in a completely unsuitable environment. She's also housed by her lonesome, even though elephants are highly sociable creatures.

12/16/2010 NORWAY BECOMES FIRST COUNTRY TO BAN FUR FOR "FASHION WEEK" EVENT

The city that hosts the Nobel Peace Prize every year is taking a step toward making it a more peaceful world for animals. There will be no fur on the catwalk at Oslo's Fashion Week next February, making Norway the first country to enact such a ban for the event. The ban was a response to a massive candlelight vigil protesting fur last November by The Norwegian animal rights group NOAH. The organization also collected signatures from more than 200 designers, models, photographers and other members of the Norwegian fashion industry who refuse to work with fur. "It has been a very natural choice for us," says Paul Vasbotten, general manager of the Oslo Fashion Week. "We are doing this in order to increaseethical values in fashion." One of Norway's top designers, Fam Ivoll, who previously used fur in her designs, is also a supporter of the ban.

12/09/2010 EU MINISTERS CALL TO RESCIND RULE FOR KOSHER MEAT LABELING

The European Council of Ministers, meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, agreed to set aside a requirement that kosher meat be labeled as having undergone a method of slaughter that some consider inhumane. Last June, the European Parliament voted in support of Amendment 205, which called for all meat products that undergo shechita, or Jewish ritual slaughter, to be labeled "meat from slaughter without stunning." The new draft followed months of lobbying by representatives of Shechita UK together with the European Jewish Congress (EJC). Shechita UK and the Board of Deputies of British Jews welcomed Tuesday's decision. "We would like to thank all the communal organizations with whom we work," said Shechita UK chairman Henry Grunwald.

12/02/2010 SAINTS FAN GETS FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR BEATING CALF TO DEATH AFTER 2009 LOSS TO DALLA COWBOYS

A Louisiana man was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for stealing a newborn calf and beating it to death with a shovel after the Saints lost to the Dallas Cowboys last season. David J. LeBlanc Jr., one of four men convicted in the case, had asked for leniency, but state District Judge Martin Coady ignored his pleas, saying LeBlanc used "a dangerous weapon" to cause the "painful death" of a defenseless animal. LeBlanc, 22, of Gibson, Dwayne J. Jenkins, 36, of Mandeville, and Carnie B. Smith, 29, of Covington, stole the 3-day-old calf from Folsom's Red Bluff Farms on December 19, authorities said. They dragged the animal to a parking lot where LeBlanc and his friends were gathered for a Saints party. That's where LeBlanc hit the calf with the shovel until it died. Jenkins and Smith watched.
