05/31/2011 A FELINE "BORED" CAT KILLER JAILED
A Brooklyn man who doused a cat with lighter fluid then set it on fire "because he was bored" will spend up to six years in jail before facing deportation, a furious judge ruled. Angelo Monderoy, 20, was convicted in March of arson, burglary and aggravated cruelty to animals for the 2009 immolation of the stray cat named Tommy Two Times. At the sentencing, Supreme Court Justice Michael Gary pointed out a probation report that cited the "atrocious nature" of the crime.

Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg has announced to the world that for the next year he will only eat meat from an animal that he has personally killed. The comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres visited the Playboy Casino at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas where she became a certified blackjack dealer to raise money for charity. She learned the ins and outs of dealing, took a tour through the hotel, and hung out with the Playboy bunnies. The 53-year-old did it all in the name of charity, raising money for The Gentle Barn and Farm Sanctuary, two animal rights organizations dedicated to providing sanctuaries for farm animals. Ellen has raised awareness for these groups before, and during the blackjack dealing she helped The Gentle Barn raise $40k by selling a lock of Justin Bieber's famous hair.
05/27/2011 "GLEE" STAR LEA MICHELE CAMPAIGNS AGAINST TESTING ON CHIMPANZEES
Glee's Lea Michele has become one of our favorites on the site, because not only is she vegan, but a staunch supporter and advocate for animal rights. Recently she teamed up with PETA to protest horse drawn carriages, and now she's speaking out against lab testing on chimpanzees. The 24-year-old penned a letter to the director of the National Institutes of Health, and stated, "As an animal protection advocate, I implore you to help 14 chimpanzees who were recently moved to a notorious Texas laboratory, where they are being used in harmful experiments." In the letter, Lea explains that the chimps had previously been used in testings, and had been retired since 2001, when the federal government decided to put them back into lab cages. She also cites how much we have learned about these animals over the past few years, and their capacity to love and mourn the loss of each other.

Katy Perry's 2011 California Dreams tour is turning out to be quite the veggie affair, as The Smoking Gun snagged the "E.T." singer's concert rider, and there's no meat to be seen! The 26-year-old has requested plant-based snacks, like organically grown fruit, veggies with hummus, dried strawberries, edamame, dried apples, and pita chips. Plus, Perry has requested that water dispensers be provided along with reusable SIGG bottles so that she and her entourage will be drinking water the eco-friendly way. It's a trend that Perry has been on for some time now, as she and her hubby Russell Brand went on a health kick where they replaced dairy with wheat and tofu, and celebrated this past Christmas with a tofurky.

For their new tour with New Kids on the Block, the Backstreet Boys have decided to kick it veggie-style and drop meat from their diets. "We're getting a lot of rest and have switched over to a vegetarian diet. I'm trying to get my brain clear and ready for everything that's to come," Nick Carter told Celebuzz.com. "I downloaded a meditation book. I like to relax and meditate. I think they're important because I have so much going on, and if I don't find peace within it all, it could be dangerous for your health." Back in the day, the 'Boys used to request lunches during tours that included hamburgers, French dip, hot turkey, Sloppy Joe's, and tacos – so it's cool to see them embracing a healthier approach to the whole thing.

As Nepal's government awarded the first international award constituted to honour Gautam Buddha, the apostle of peace and non-violence, and peace rallies countrywide celebrated the icon's 2,555th birth anniversary, outraged animal rights activists said over 700 animals had been sacrificed Tuesday by clans flouting a tacit ban on animal killings on the day. The Animal Welfare Network Nepal, an animal rights organization campaigning to stop animal and bird sacrifices in the name of religion, said communities once engaged as warriors had held clan worship in at least three places in Kathmandu Tuesday killing over 700 animals.
05/19/2011 HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL SEEKS BAN ON NON-THERAPEUTIC USAGE OF ANTIBIOTICS IN FARMED ANIMALS
Citing both animal welfare and human health concerns, Humane Society International urged the government to impose a ban on the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in farm animals. The National Policy for Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance, released last month, similarly expressed concerns over the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in farm animals, particularly poultry, and called for an intersectoral coordination committee to develop regulations on the use of antimicrobials in animals, and to create labeling requirements for animal source foods produced with antibiotics. Currently there are no regulatory provisions in the country regarding the use of antibiotics in farm animals. "We hope that the Ministry of Health recognises the importance of these recommendations and imposes a ban on the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in farm animals" said N.G. Jayasimha, manager of HSI's factory farming campaign in India. "It is imperative that intersectoral coordination committee takes action to address the routine and dangerous use of antibiotics on India's factory farms."
05/18/2011 BARDOT URGES NATO TO STOP STRAY DOGS KILLING IN KOSOVO
French screen legend Brigitte Bardot on Thursday urged NATO-led peacekeepers (KFOR) in Kosovo to halt the "slaughter" of dogs saying nearly 200 strays had been shot dead recently. In a letter to KFOR commander general Erhard Buehler, Bardot urged him to "act quickly in order to stop the use of guns and stop the killing" of the strays in the past three weeks. "You are the highest authority for the use of weapons in Kosovo and your responsibility is to establish a secure environment in Kosovo," Bardot said in a letter, a copy of which was sent to AFP. KFOR peacekeepers from 31 NATO and non-NATO countries have been maintaining security in Kosovo since a NATO air campaign ousted forces loyal to the late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic in 1999. Bardot said that "nearly 200 dogs dogs were shot and dozens experiencing a slow agonizing death." Packs of stray dogs often wander around Kosovo towns, with local municipalities facing an uphill task to clear them from the streets.

Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support shared good news about the starving animals stranded in the Fukushima No-Go Zone. Companion animals guardians will be temporarily allowed enter the area to bring their cats, dogs and other animals to safety. This will be implemented in nine cities and towns, including Tamura and Minami Soma City. The Ministry of the Environment and Fukushima Prefecture will work together in teams with two vehicles to conduct an orderly rescue of animals that have been tied to ropes within the grounds of homes, either on the same day or the next day after residents return home temporarily. A decision has also been made to transfer pigs being raised in Minami Soma City within the exclusion zone to a Tokyo University affiliated farm in Ibaraki Prefecture.
05/13/2011 LEAKED EU COUNCIL PAPER REVEALS CLONED FOOD RESTRICTIONS WERE POSSIBLE
As raised during debate in the European Parliament on May 11, BEUC and the Eurogroup for Animals are bewildered by a confidential document from the Council which reveals that, contrary to what was argued by EU Ministers and Commission during negotiations on the "Novel Food" regulation, restrictions on the marketing of food from cloned animals and their offspring could be possible with WTO rules and concludes: a labelling requirement for food from cloned animals and their offspring would be compatible with GATT rules; the case that this food are not "like" products as compared to food from conventionally bred animals, thus not resulting in violation of WTO rules, could be defendable; with regards to a ban of food from offspring of cloned animals, "the EU might be able to justify the infringement under Article XX GATT" on the basis of consumers' ethical considerations - as for the cat and dog fur legislation. With this opinion of the Council’s legal service on compatibility of restrictions of food from offspring of cloned animals with WTO rules, it appears the threat of a trade war brandished during the negotiations between the European institutions was exaggerated.

"Smoke" the Donkey rescued by U.S. Marines in Iraq is flying to America thanks to intense international effort. SPCA International won travel release to allow "Smoke" to become 1st animal transport from Iraq into Turkey since the war in Iraq started. SPCA International announces "Smoke" will land at New York's JFK International Airport this week with SPCA International rescue expert Terri Crisp. As required by the USDA, Smoke will be held in quarantine stables near the airport for a brief period before being officially released. The Donkey will then be reunited with Ret. Marine Col. John Folsom.
05/11/2011 HIKER DIES WHILE SAVING HIS DOG FROM FALL
A South Carolina hiker is dead after falling 125 feet from a waterfall while trying to rescue his dog. The dog regained its footing and survived. Authorities say 29-year-old landscape architect David A. Lewis of Greenville was hiking with his girlfriend and his dog on Saturday afternoon when he tried to stop the dog from falling off a ledge. Greenville County Deputy Coroner Kent Dill said the man's girlfriend suffered some bruises as she went down to try to help the victim.
05/10/2011 CHINESE DOGS RESCUED FROM DINNER TABLE
Animal rights activists in China have rescued nearly 500 dogs destined for the dinner table after stopping a truck carrying the animals. They bought the dogs from the lorry driver for $18,000 following a stand-off by the roadside involving the police. The animals are now recovering at a compound on the outskirts of Beijing and at a number of animal hospitals around the city. The incident illustrates how a growing number of Chinese people now view dogs - and cats - as companion animals rather than protein. It also reveals how China has an expanding animal rights movement; people who are prepared to take action on the streets.

05/04/2011 AUSTRIAN ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS ACQUITED OF ALL CHARGES
All 13 Austrian animal rights activists who were charged with being part of a "criminal conspiracy" were just acquitted on their final day of trial. The announcement is a major victory in a case that has drawn international attention from civil liberties and human rights groups. The activists, from diverse animal protection groups, had spent more than three months in jail. During the year-long trial, it was exposed that Austrian police had been briefed by American and British counter-terrorism officials and police had infiltrated activist groups to spy on lawful activity. In brief, the government argued that both mainstream and "militant" groups were part of a criminal conspiracy - not because of their actions, but because of their beliefs in support of animal rights – and that they should therefore be held responsible for a wide range of crimes committed in the name of animal rights, and profits lost by corporations. The media coverage in Austria has overwhelmingly been in favor of the activists, and the exposure of police abuses in the name of fighting “terrorism” have led to outrage beyond the animal rights movement.
05/03/2011 SENATE PASSES BILL ON GREYHOUND RACING
TALLAHASSEE - Legislation that would end a state mandate coupling greyhound racing and card room gambling is one step closer to becoming law. The Florida Senate voted 25 to 14 to approve its version of a bill that would allow greyhound tracks to cut down the number of races they offer - or end racing all together - and still run their highly-profitable card rooms. The House passed its version of the bill earlier in the week, but there are some differences between the two bills regarding tax credits. If the House passes the Senate version as is, it will go to Gov. Rick Scott's desk.
