12/31/2011 VENUS AND SERENA WILLIAMS SWITCH TO RAW VEGAN DIETS FOR HEALTH

Venus Williams has been diagnosed with a disease that will impact her health and her tennis career, but her and sister Serena are sticking together to get through it and changing their diets. According to The Daily Mail, Venus revealed that reason for her drop out of the U.S. Open this summer was an incurable disease of the immune system called Sjogren's Syndrome. The symptoms caused her to cancel her second U.S. Open match, after winning the first. Now the tennis star is taking it easy. It was Serena who suggested that she try holistic ways to treat her symptoms, as some treatments for the disease can cause other health problems. Along with massages and yoga, Venus has switched to a diet of raw vegan foods hoping to reduce inflammation in her joints. Serena has made the diet change too, saying "She has done a complete U-turn. She was devastated but she is so positive now."

12/30/2011 DECLINE IN U.S. MEAT CONSUMPTION EXPECTED TO CONTINUE IN 2012

Meat consumption has been on the decline in the United States over the last few years – a trend that, according to a new report, is expected to continue through 2012. According to Mercy For Animals (MFA), a new Daily Livestock Report 2010 was the fourth year in a row that Americans' consumption of meat has declined. The trend is expected to continue in 2012, despite the growth of the U.S. population. The biggest decline is expected to occur in beef consumption, with many people opting for chicken instead. MFA says that this causes even more animals to suffer as it takes more chickens to produce the same amount of meat from a single cow. However, they state that consumption of meat, including chicken, overall has declined in the U.S.

12/28/2011 PINK SAVES LIFE OF PUPPY THROWN OFF LOS ANGELES OVERPASS

Pink is a known animal lover. She has spoken out against the wool industry, as well as advocated against wearing fur and reptile skins. Recently, the singer's big heart was captured by the story of a puppy who sustained major injuries after being thrown off a LA overpass. The pup broke three legs and was in need of emergency medical help, or it might not make it. Once the singer read the article, she then, according to TMZ, contacted Ace of Hearts, an animal rescue organization and offered to pay for the dog's medical bills to save its life. Five thousand dollars later, the pup is now in great shape and was adopted by a lovely family in time for the holidays.

12/27/2011 NEW POLL - THERE ARE MORE VEGANS THAN VEGETARIANS IN THE UNITED STATES

According to a release from the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG), which has been conducting research on vegetarian questions for some time, 2% of Americans say they are vegetarian while 3% say they are vegan.  And more men are vegan than women. In this survey, approximately 5% of the country say that they never eat meat, fish, seafood, or poultry. About half of these vegetarians are also vegan; that is they also don't eat dairy or eggs. This survey was conducted by Harris Interactive by telephone within the United States on behalf of the Vegetarian Resource Group between March 30 and April 3, 2011 among a nationwide cross section of 1,010 adults (aged 18 and over). Figures for age, sex, race, education, region, number of adults in household, and number of telephone lines were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population.

12/24/2011 KATE MIDDLETON OPTS OUT OF HUNT AFTER LETTER FROM PETA

England's royal family isn't exactly known for their compassion for animals. For example, Prince Harry's birthday gift from brother Prince William this year was a group of 250 birds – to shoot and kill. PETA wasn't too pleased, and sent Kate Middleton a letter asking her to put a stop to the plans. Now, the Duchess of Cambridge has been sent another letter, from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. According to PETA, Middleton has chosen to opt out of the annual pheasant hunt that takes place on Boxing Day. The organization says Kate's decision followed the letter sent by Newkirk. She asked Middleton to follow the example of the late Princess Diana, who did not agree with hunting for sport. She went on to explain the cruel nature of the hunts and the pheasants that are raised in "intensive confinement" and either killed during the hunt or have their necks wrung later, while some are left to bleed to death.

12/24/2011 MAN STRIPS NAKED AND CAGES HIMSELF TO PROTEST DOG BUTCHERS

An encaged performance artist set up shop in front of a Guizhou Province dog butcher shop to protest the consumption of dogs. Despite the 3 degrees Celsius outside temperature, the 40-year-old canine advocate, Pian Shankong, was clad in nothing but a pair of underwear. Throngs of self-proclaimed dog volunteers joined him in the demonstration, chanting "do not eat dog meat." Pian stated with regards to the spectacle: "I do urge you not to eat dog meat. We love promoting small animals, protection of human faithful friend." Pian's protest is one of many demonstrations he has "performed" in a circuit of Southwest China, spanning Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces in addition to Guizhou.

12/23/2011 USDA FORECASTS SHARP DROP IN MEAT CONSUMPTION

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) December forecasts call for another sharp drop in U.S. domestic meat and poultry consumption in 2012, according to CME Group's Daily Livestock Report published by Steve Meyer and Len Steiner. The authors state the plunge doesn't come as a big surprise, but the cumulative reductions of the past few years are rather shocking in historical context. U.S. meat and poultry consumption is measured in this article on a boneless equivalent (BE) basis because it best represents the amount actually consumed by people after allowing for pet food usage and wastage from bones and skin. USDA data suggests that the average American will consume 12.2% less meat and poultry in 2012 than they did in 2007. Three major reasons for the change in meat consumption include: growing exports, higher costs and government policy over 30-40 years.

12/22/2011 UNITED STATES TO STOP FUNDING CHIMPANZEE EXPERIMENTS?

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has announced that there will be no new grants given for research on chimpanzees. While this is partially a victory for chimpanzees and animal organizations, there are unfortunately loopholes for researchers to use. According to the NY Times, the NIH has accepted a criteria to determine if biomedical and behavioral research on chimpanzees is necessary. If chimp research is found to be "necessary for human health" and there are no other alternatives, then funding may be provided. The report also only covers chimps that are owned by the federal government. While there are clearly loopholes, some animal organizations are celebrating as it will help to reduce research conducted on chimps.

12/21/2011 NEW ANIMAL CHARITY IS A WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING

A few weeks ago you might have noticed full page ads in the NY Times, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune announcing the arrival of a new "animal welfare" organization called the Humane Society for Shelter Pets. But don’t be fooled. The Humane Society for Shelter Pets is nothing but a hungry industry wolf dressed up as a sheep to trick the flock. The Humane Society for Shelter Pets chose their name carefully. It's awfully similar to The Humane Society of the United States. Rick Berman, the man behind The Humane Society for Shelter Pets, is a long time enemy of HSUS and has worked against their campaigns for years. According to Wayne Pacelle, CEO of HSUS, Berman opposed Prop B and other efforts to stop puppy mills, defended seal clubbing in Canada, stood against Prop 2 in California to protect farm animals and oposed HSUS's efforts to ban horse slaughter.

12/20/2011 RUSSIA'S BAN ON HARP SEAL SKIN IMPORTS A BIG HIT TO CANADIAN SEAL HUNT

All signs point to the end of the Canadian seal hunt. The European Union's (EU) ban of seal product imports in 2009 was a big step, and Canada has unsuccessfully been trying to get the ban lifted since. With the demand for their seal pelts declining rapidly, Canada struck a deal with China this year to sell seal meat and oil, but the deal has so far been postponed. The movement to end the seal hunt continues to grow and attract big celebrity names including Ellen DeGeneres, Kesha, and Bill Maher. Yesterday, another big hit to Canada's seal hunt hit the news. Russia has banned imports of harp seal products. According to a statement by Sheryl Fink, Seal Programme Director for International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the ban by the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the Russian Federation is the biggest win in the campaign against the hunt since the EU ban. Russia ended their seal hunt in 2009. Now, this ban is another big step as Russia imported approximately 90% of Canada's seal exports.

12/19/2011 100 BELUGAS TRAPPED UNDER ICE

Right now, in northeastern Russia about 100 beluga whales are trapped under thickening ice and are in incredible danger if they remain too long where they are at.  Large portions of concentrated sea ice in the Sinyavinsky Straight (off the Bering Sea, in the Chukotka region) have effectively confined the dozens of belugas that are now relying on a couple of smaller holes in the ice in order to get air. Their plight first caught the attention of local fishermen in the area and now many Russian agencies are rushing to rescue these animals before it is too late. For the time being, the whales are like sitting ducks in the water. Each day brings a new threat. While Russian authorities work to free the animals from their side, it is important that the United States does what it can from its end.

12/17/2011 BEYONCE AND JAY-Z EXPERIMENTING WITH VEGAN DIET?!

Are Beyonce and Jay-Z the latest high-profile celebrities to ditch the animal products and go vegan? The answer is a kinda, sorta, spin-the-wheel-of-Internet-gossip-and-see-where-it-lands maybe. According to US Weekly, the pair have gone "partially-vegan" (which apparently is vogue for eating less animal products) as Beyonce seeks to eat healthy during her pregnancy and avoid putting on too much weight. Pop Crush is saying they're full-on vegans. One thing which is certain is that Jay-Z is joining his wife in experimenting with the diet as a show of support.

12/16/2011 THOUSANDS OF BIRDS MAKE CRASH LANDING IN UTAH

Thousands of migratory birds were killed or injured after apparently mistaking a Wal-Mart parking lot, football fields and other snow-covered areas of southern Utah for bodies of water and plummeting to the ground in what one state wildlife expert called the worst mass bird crash she'd ever seen. Crews went to work cleaning up the dead birds and rescuing the injured survivors after the creatures crash-landed in the St. George area Monday night. By midday Wednesday, volunteers had helped rescue more than 3,000 birds, releasing them into a nearby pond. There's no count on how many died, although officials estimate it's upwards of 1,500. Officials say stormy conditions probably confused the flock of eared grebes, a duck-like aquatic bird likely making its way to the Mexican coast for the winter.

12/15/2011 ALICIA SILVERSTONE WANTS YOU TO HELP SAVE CHIMPS

In a blog posted on her website The Kind Life, the vegan actress and author asked for support in fighting the use of chimps in medical research. She wrote, "The issue of experimentation on chimps is one that breaks my heart. They are so close to us. And even if they weren't, they are amazing beings. One way in which they are not similar to humans, however, is disease expression. Evidence has shown that when medications are tested on chimps, the results are not repeated in human subjects. For example, a drug that controlled HIV in chimps failed to do so in humans. So why are laboratories still performing cruel tests on these sensitive, emotional beings?" Along with her concerns regarding the suffering of these animals, she also expressed concern with the use of money for these experiments. Silverstone went on to ask for support of an act that would end the use of chimps in research labs.

12/14/2011 MEMENTO MORI: LOOKING INTO THE EYES OF DOGS ON DEATH ROW

The series titled Memento Mori (or "Remember Your Mortality") was created by photographer Yun-Fei Tou. Over on the site fotovisura, the artist describes in more detail the purpose behind the images. "The purpose of this project is to arouse people's awareness of animals rights and make people think through, carefully and consistently, the question of how we ought to treat nonhuman animals. The animals themselves are incapable of demanding their own liberation, or of protesting against their condition with votes, demonstrations, or boycotts. We have to speak up on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves." These images record the last moments of life for some dogs found in public pounds run by governmental agencies in Taiwan. These portraits are taken on the very day in which the animal depicted is about to be put down or mercifully killed.

12/13/2011 ELLEN DEGENERES TO LAUNCH VEGAN PET FOODS LINE

Ellen DeGeneres has been making it even easier to go vegan, from her website Going Vegan With Ellen to an upcoming Los Angeles vegan restaurant. Soon, she may be helping your dog and cat go veg too. DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi are reportedly planning to launch a line of vegan pet foods. According to The West Australian, it's still unknown when the foods will hit stores and if they will include food for animals other than dogs and cats. The Chicago Sun-Times wrote, "The couple also are developing a line of vegan pet foods - after discovering a void in the market for people looking to feed their dogs and cats vegan vittles."

12/12/2011 EMPIRE STATE BUILDING TURNS RED FOR DOLPHINS

The Empire State Building changed its colors this weekend to highlight the continued tragedy of the dolphin slaughter in Japan. As mentioned earlier, the owner of the iconic landmark was inspired to get involved after seeing the Academy-Award winning documentary "The Cove". The event, organized by professional race car driver and Save Japan Dolphins volunteer Leilani Munter, was attended by Ric O'Barry, actor John Leguizamo, "The Cove" Director Louie Psihoyos, and photographed by Deborah Bassett.

12/10/2011 CANADIAN BILL INTRODUCED TO BAN SHARK FIN IMPORTS NATIONWIDE

The movement to ban shark fins has been gaining strength, with more bans passing throughout the world. In the United States, bans have been passed in Washington, Oregon, Hawaii and most recently California, the largest market for shark fins outside of Asia. Now, in Canada a federal bill has been introduced and would ban the import of shark fins throughout the entire nation. According to Shark Angels, Canadian Bill C380 would ban the imports into the country as well as urge other nations to take the same step. MP Fin Donnelly, who introduced the bill, says "It's time for the federal government to listen to their municipal counterparts and take action. They can demonstrate real leadership on this global issue and institute an import ban of shark fins to Canada." While bans have already been passed in Brantford, Mississauga, Oakville, Pickering, London and Toronto, the federal law will help to prevent the international trade of illegally obtained shark fins being imported into Canada.

12/09/2011 SCIENTISTS QUESTION VALUE OF MONKEY EXPERIMENTS

A team of scientists, including a professor of neuroscience based at the University of California in San Diego, has published an in-depth analysis that will make researchers who use animals begin to question not just the ethics of using these animals in research, but also the science that underpins their use as "models" of human diseases. The article, published December 6, 2011 in the online peer-reviewed journal Medicolegal and Bioethics, represents a rare challenge to the use of non human primates in science. The scientific criticism levelled at this research is intended as a wake-up call not just for the animal-based researcher community, but also for the general public and those who fund animal experiments. Says Ray Greek MD, principal author of the article, "The current scientific evidence is stacked against the practice of using animals, in general, and non human primates, specifically, in biomedical research. This has important legal and ethical ramifications."

12/08/2011 ZACHARY QUINTO MAKING FILM ABOUT DOG ADOPTION

Actor and dog lover Zachary Quinto is set to star in a short film called Dog Eat Dog, about the challenges he faced while attempting to adopt a rescue pooch. Quinto's friend, filmmaker Sian Heder, is helming the project, because she thought it would be an entertaining way to shed light on the joy of owning a rescue dog. According to Heder, "Years ago, when Zach first tried to adopt a dog from the pound, he ended up in a rivalry with an unexpected competitor. Sometimes real life offers up gems, and in my mind, this story has always begged to be a little film..." Although Quinto did not end up adopting that particular pup, he is now the proud guardian of a rescue named Noah. The film, which is shooting this month, is being filmed at the Humane Society and will feature shelter dogs. Quinto and Heder used kickstarter.com to fund the project, and although they exceeded their goal, they are still taking donations, since a percentage will go to the Humane Society.

12/07/2011 ANOTHER NYC CARRIAGE HORSE FALLS IN NYC

The horse carriage nightmare continues in NYC as holiday shoppers witnessed yet another fall on Sunday near the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street. According to a spokesman for the Horse and Carriage Association of New York, who objected to the title of the YouTube video (NYC Carriage Horse Collapses 12/4/11 Copyright Win Animal Rights) the horse did not collapse, but instead "caught its toe in the pavement, which is quite common." A commenter on the Huffington Post however, took issue with that explanation saying, "I own horses and that IS NOT just a slip on a crack in the pavement. I suppose they think that everyone in society are buffoons. Not all!"

12/07/2011 ELIZA DUSHKU GOES VEGAN AFTER WATCHING "FORKS OVER KNIVES"

The documentary "Forks Over Knives" is having one heck of an impact! First Russell Brand went vegan. Then, Ozzy Osbourne. Carrie Ann Inaba went vegetarian. Now, actress Eliza Dushku is jumping into the world of plant based foods. Giving farm animals and her health the gift of a veg diet this holiday season isn't the only good deed Dushku is doing. The soon-to-be 31 year old star is raising funds for the organization THARCE-Gulu for her birthday.

12/06/2011 ALL IAN SOMERHALDER WANTS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY IS A BETTER WORLD

"The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder lives and breathes his organization, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. If you follow the ISF on twitter or facebook, you know that he is constantly sharing information and figuring out how to mobilize youth to change the world for the better. Now, utilizing his own 33rd birthday and the generosity of his fans, the actor is looking to change the way birthdays are celebrated. Being the smart eco warrior that he is, Somerhalder is asking fans to hold back on sending him "stuff" this year and instead, to donate to his foundation. "If you really are driven to still give, the best birthday present I could possibly imagine receiving is a donation to ISF. Everyone who has it within their hearts to support ISF deserves some respect and love, and the only way I know how to give a little of this to so very many is to try my very best to try to send each and everyone of you a personal email."

No more dookie Christmas gifts. That' the message Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and his wife Adrienne are sending this holiday season. The pair have teamed up with the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to ask consumers to buy Christmas gifts that benefit the environment. Instead of purchasing mass-produced "sh*t gifts" that are prone to breaking, the Armstrongs are encouraging people to "protect the polar bear or revive the rainforest" instead, by buying presents from the NRDC. The NRDC Green Gifts website offers 50 environmentally-friendly gift choices in a range of prices, including options to save wolves, plant trees, educate children, green libraries, fight pollution, build parks and more, including the big-ticket item: visiting the last Gray Whale Nursery in Baja.

12/03/2011 DORIS DAY'S NEW ALBUM TO BENEFIT ANIMALS

Screen legend Doris Day made her mark on the world as a Hollywood star, but for the past thirty years, she has devoted herself to something else altogether - animal welfare. In 1978, she founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation, a cause she has continued to support even though she left the spotlight long ago. Now she's stepping back on the scene with a new album - her first in 17 years - and the proceeds will benefit her organization. My Heart is comprised of 13 previously unreleased tracks that were recorded over the span of 40 years. As for why she is donating the proceeds of the album to her animal foundation, her reasoning is simple. "They're the most perfect things on Earth. They're loyal. They love you. And they'll never forget you... I think they're put here for us to learn what love is all about."

12/02/2011 KE$HA TEAMS UP WITH HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL TO PROTECT STREET DOGS

As the Humane Society International's first Global Ambassador, Ke$ha continues to fight for animal rights, and this time she is lending a hand to street dogs. More than an important issue to the singer, this is something that hits close to home. In a special message, Ke$ha reveals one night on an island in the South Pacific, she and a friend witnessed two abused dogs "who literally had been super glued together." Even though they managed to help separate the dogs, they had to watch man's best friend walk away, because no community resources or shelters were available. The singer is hoping to reach out to as many people as possible with the hope of preventing the abuse of street dogs.

12/02/2011 LAB BEAGLES RELEASED IN SPAIN

Forty male beagles raised inside a lab in Spain arrived in Los Angeles last week where they will be put up for adoption after being freed from captivity by the Beagle Freedom Project. The rescue mission is the largest yet for the group Animal Rescue Media Education (ARME). A total of 72 dogs were rescued in the effort, 32 of them having already been adopted in Europe, according to NBC Los Angeles. ARME's Beagle Freedom Project spokesman Gary Smith said the beagles, all between ages 4 and 7, had lived in cages their entire lives. According to the Beagle Freedom Project's website, beagles are the breed of choice for lab testing of pharmaceutical, household, and cosmetic products due to their "friendly, docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities," their ability to adapt to life in a cage and the fact that they are relatively inexpensive to feed.
