07/31/2014 KIDS WITH COMPANION ANIMALS MORE LIKELY TO AVOID EATING MEAT

Kids who spend time cuddling up with Fido or Fluffy are more likely to turn their noses up at meat later in life, a new study suggests. Those children who have formed attachments to their companion animals may develop empathy toward other animals, too, which can result in greater avoidance of eating meat, the researchers suggested. "Once an individual feels empathy toward animals, it makes it harder to eat animals," study author Hank Rothgerber, a professor of psychology at Bellarmine University and a vegetarian for more than 12 years, told Live Science in an email. In the study, Rothgerber and colleagues asked 273 people if they ate meat, and, if they did, how much meat they normally ate, as well as whether they owned an animal in childhood and how attached they were to their animals.

07/30/2014 SUBWAY TESTS OUT VEGAN "MALIBU GARDEN"

Subway is once again leading the way in making fast food chains vegan-friendly. The sandwich restaurant has introduced the all-vegan "Malibu" sub to selected menus in California as a test to see how well received the meat-free option is with customers. So far, the response has been positive. Sandwich artists at the Hollywood and Los Angeles locations have stated that in the week the "Malibu Garden" has been offered, customers have raved about it. The ingredients of the vegan sub do sound delicious even to meat-eaters: a veggie patty with whole grains such as brown rice and rolled oats, as well as veggies, a dairy and egg-free creamy "fire roasted tomato sauce" and the usual pick-and-choose veggies. Customers can also order it on the vegan Italian bread.

07/29/2014 DICAPRIO RAISES $25 MILLION TO PROTECT ENVIRONMENT

Leonardo DiCaprio has friends in high places, which comes in handy when he's trying to raise money to save the planet. The award winning actor raised $25 million on Wednesday to protect the environment and endangered species. The charity gala was held in the Riviera seaside resort of Saint-Tropez and the 500 guests, which included Academy award winner Marion Cotillard and soap star Joan Collins, paid between $7,000 and 130,000 to get in and participate in the auction for a good cause. Before the bidding began, DiCaprio took the spotlight to explain just why raising funds was important. He reinforced the idea that the planet's flora and animal species are being decimated at a rate not seen since the age of the dinosaurs.

07/28/2014 SADDEST POLAR BEAR WILL NOT BE MOVED

After the story of Arturo, the saddest polar bear in the world, went viral last week, hundreds of thousands rallied to save him. Unfortunately, the Argentine zoo that's keeping him said he will not be moved. "Arturo is close to his caretakers," said Mendoza zoo director Gustavo Pronotto who argues Arturo is too old to be moved. "We just want everyone to stop bothering the bear." What Pronotto calls "bothering" was over 700,000 people signing a petition to have Arturo moved to a sanctuary in Canada, where the colder wintery weather would be more fitting for his species. In Argentina, Arturo is forced to stay in his small enclosure with no protection from the sun at temperatures that can reach 86 degrees in the summer. Coupled with the fact that his long term companion Peluza died two years ago, the heat has taken a toll on Arturo who has been acting depressed and distressed.

07/25/2014 RHINO POACHER GETS 77 YEARS IN JAIL

A rhino poacher in South Africa has been sentenced to 77 years in prison in one of the heaviest penalties aimed at curbing poachers who target rhinos for their horns, which fetch a high price on the illegal market in parts of Asia. The sentencing of Mandla Chauke, a South African who was arrested in Kruger National Park in 2011, shows that South African courts are starting to realize the negative impact that poaching has not only on wildlife but also an economy heavily dependent on tourism, South Africa's national parks service said Wednesday. "We hope that this will be a deterrent" to other poachers, parks spokesman Reynold Thakhuli said.

07/24/2014 MEAT TURNS UP THE HEAT

Eating meat contributes to climate change, due to greenhouse gasses emitted by livestock. New research finds that livestock emissions are on the rise and that beef cattle are responsible for far more greenhouse gas emissions than other types of animals. It is published by Climatic Change. The research team, including Dario Caro and Ken Caldeira, estimated the greenhouse gas emissions related to livestock in 237 countries over a nearly half a century and found that livestock emissions increased by 51 percent over this period. They found a stark difference between livestock-related emissions in the developing world, which accounts for most of this increase, and that released by developed countries. This is expected to increase further going forward, as demand for meat, dairy products, and eggs is predicted by some scientists to double by 2050. By contrast, developed countries reached maximum livestock emissions in the 1970s and have been in decline since that time.

07/24/2014 MEAT PRICES RISING MORE THAN FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

It's a good time to be a vegan. Meat prices are up 9.4% in June from a year earlier, and pork, fish and eggs are more expensive, too. Prices for the food Americans buy in grocery stores were flat in June and up 2.4% from a year ago, the Labor Department said Tuesday. But that comes after a run-up in prices earlier this year, when what Americans pay for food at home rose between 0.4% and 0.7% over the past six months. "In general, we are still seeing higher inflation among the foods located in the peripheral of the grocery store — meats, produce, dairy, etc.," said Annemarie Kuhns, an economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Non-perishable foods have had lower rates of inflation in recent months, she added. Food prices have been ticking higher after a series of factors that, when taken together, dramatically reduce supply.

07/23/2014 BEYOND MEAT UNLEASHES NEW "BEAST" VEGAN BURGER ON NY METS

Beyond Meat are soon rolling out The Beast, their new protein-packed vegan burger. To taste-test the meatless patty, Beyond Meat's chief executive, Ethan Brown, paid a visit to the New York Mets and handed out samples. "So this has zero beef?" asked starting pitcher, John Niese, perhaps feeling a touch of disbelief as he chewed the vegan burger. Anthony Recker, catcher, says he rarely eats red meat and avoids preservatives. Team captain and third baseman, David Wright, told Brown, "Six years ago I cut out red meat. It made me lethargic." Brown approached the Mets for feedback on the new burger in the hopes that their endorsement will make the product more appealing to young consumers. Brown says that the company has approached the Golden State Warriors, Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Giants, New York Yankees, and New England Patriots, hoping to arrange taste tests similar to the Mets event or get players to try samples. If feedback is positive, this seems like a surefire way to get more vegan options into baseball stadiums.

07/22/2014 CHINA SHUTS MEAT PRODUCER SUPPLYING MCDONALD'S, KFC

Shanghai has shut a factory of US food producer OSI Group for selling out-of-date meat to restaurant giants including McDonald's and KFC in China's latest food safety scandal. A Shanghai television channel said that workers at the plant mixed expired meat with the fresh product and deliberately misled quality inspectors from McDonald's. City officials closed the Shanghai Husi Food Co. factory on Sunday and seized products which allegedly used the expired meat, the Shanghai food and drug administration said in a statement. Police were investigating, it said, threatening "severe punishment" in future. Television footage showed workers in white suits picking up meat and hamburger patties from the floor before putting them back into processing machinery, and one employee handling out-of-date beef and calling it "stinky meat". McDonald's said in a statement it had "immediately" stopped using the factory's products while restaurant operator Yum separately said its KFC and Pizza Hut establishments had also halted use of its meat. KFC has faced food safety issues in China before, when authorities found excessive levels of antibiotics in chicken it sourced from local suppliers in 2012.

07/21/2014 FOUR RHINOS KILLED IN KENYA'S WORST POACHING ATTACK IN YEARS

Poaching across sub-Saharan Africa is on the rise as armed criminal gangs kill elephants for tusks and rhinos for horns, usually to be shipped to Asia for use in ornaments and medicines. The poaching on July 9 night took place at the private Ol Jogi ranch near Nanyuki, about 200 km (120 miles) north of Nairobi. The rhino bodies were found on two separate sites on the 58,000-acre ranch and the poachers escaped with three of the animals' eight horns. One conservationist said the Ol Jogi raid was the worst poaching incident in Kenya since five white rhinos were killed in one swoop in Meru Park in 1988.

07/19/2014 "BAYWATCH" ACTRESS TALKS VEGANISM AND SEAWORLD

Alexandra Paul is mostly known for her 93 episode stint on "Baywatch" but perhaps she should be known for her compassionate and eco-friendly lifestyle. "I am now a vegan, but I have been a vegetarian since I was 14 years old," the actress said about her dedication to animal rights during a recent interview. "Even in my early twenties, I had it in my contract that I would not wear any makeup tested on animals." Paul was also way ahead of the times back in the late nineties when she refused to be in an episode taking place at SeaWorld. "In one of the 'Baywatch' episodes, I asked the producers to write me out of a Sea World scene, as I abhor marine parks, zoos and circuses, and they did. I will always appreciate how very respectful the producers were of my beliefs," she said. More than 20 years later, Paul's activism is still going strong and more intertwined with her career than ever. The actress is producing two movies, one of which has an animal rights theme.

07/18/2014 COW'S MILK CONSUMPTION PLUMMETS

Got milk? Not anymore. More Americans are moving away from cow’s milk, USDA data has shown. In fact, overall cow’s milk consumption has dropped 37% since the 1970s. Alternatives to cow’s milk are on the rise. Soy, almond, rice, hemp, coconut and other plant milks are being consumed by vegans and meat-eaters alike. Some opt for non-dairy milks due to allergies or vegan beliefs, many choose it for taste, and for some it’s a matter of price. The price of cow’s milk has increased 10% in just the last year. Plant milks are rich in protein and calcium and are fortified with other vitamins, much like breakfast cereals. Non-dairy milks also have a good source of calcium that has higher absorption than cow’s milk, other studies are showing. The rates of bone fracture are highest in cow’s milk-drinking countries.

07/16/2014 POPE FRANCIS ON ENVIRONMENT DESTRUCTION: "THIS IS OUR SIN"

Pope Francis condemned the exploitation of the environment at a recent public appearance calling it a modern sin during a speech at the university of Molise, in southern Italy. "This is one of the greatest challenges of our time: to convert ourselves to a type of development that knows how to respect creation." Now Francis, who took his name from the 13th century canonized Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment, is penning a letter to all bishops of the catholic church about the relationship between man and nature.

07/15/2014 CHINA "ADMITS" TRADING IN TIGER SKINS

China has for the first time admitted in public that it permits trade in skins from captive tigers, according to participants and officials at a meeting of an international convention to protect endangered species. They said the Chinese authorities had never before reported this to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites). However, during the convention's standing committee meeting in Geneva, China reportedly said that it still banned tiger bones. "A Chinese delegate said, 'we don't ban trade in tiger skins but we do ban trade in tiger bones,'" a participant in the meeting said.

07/14/2014 INCREDIBLE SIGHT OF THE ELEPHANT THAT CRIED

Raju the elephant was left bleeding from spiked shackles and living on hand-outs from passing tourists after he was captured and tied up by his "owner." But, after 50 years of torture, the animal cried tears of relief after he was rescued by a wildlife charity in a daring midnight operation – fittingly on American Independence Day. North London-based charity Wildlife SOS stepped in to save Raju from dying in his bonds after learning of his plight in India. Every day, the majestic animal was forced to hold out his trunk and beg for a few coins from passers-by – surviving only on plastic and paper for food. However, a 10-strong team of vets and wildlife experts from the charity were joined by 20 forestry department officers and six policemen to seize Raju from his suffering in the Uttar Pradesh area of India. The mission took place under the cover of darkness, as fewer people would be around for the dangerous rescue and the animal could be protected from the searing heat of the sun.

07/11/2014 IFEEL'S NEW MEET ME EP & VIDEO INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN

07/10/2014 INDIA BANS FOIE GRAS

India has banned the import of foie gras, a government notice said, after animal rights activists complained that the method used to produce the duck liver delicacy was cruel. "Import policy of the item 'foie gras'... is revised from 'free' to 'prohibited'," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in the notice on its website. An Indian government official could not immediately say how much of the gourmet food the country imported. A number of countries such as Denmark, Finland and Germany have banned the production of foie gras.

07/10/2014 MUSTANGS ON VERGE OF GOING EXTINCT

Despite overall numbers in the tens of thousands, mustang advocates say the wild horse is on the verge of going extinct in North America for the second time in 13,000 years and deserves protection under the Endangered Species Act alongside grizzly bears, the desert tortoise and humpback whales. Efforts to halt mustang roundups in Congress and the courts have been unsuccessful over the past decade, but two groups in a petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are focusing on genetics and research they say prove the horses are a native species. They say growing threats from development, livestock grazing and government gathers are jeopardizing the genetic viability of individual herds in 10 states from California to Montana.

07/08/2014 RAW AND VEGAN CAFES SPRING UP IN THE UAE

A health wave is taking over the UAE, with raw and vegan outlets becoming the latest trend. Raw vegan food does not include items of animal origin, and is cooked at temperatures below 48°C. On a visit to Dubai-based Comptoir 102 in June 2014 as a guest chef, Sati Faulks revealed that he is working on a new concept — cold-pressed juice bars which will offer fresh juices and raw food. Silvena Rowe, who entered the UAE more than a year ago, has finally opened her own brand of restaurants, starting with Omnia Gourmet. This is a deli-cum-café located in Jumeirah and is aimed at the health-conscious — the menu aims to be raw, vegan, paleo, gluten-free, as well as sugar-free. Bestro claims to be the city's first "living raw foods restaurant" with the menu being 100% raw, organic and vegan. The café is run by Hayley Ross Macdonald, founder of Be Supernatural, the brand of raw and organic superfoods.

07/08/2014 ZOO KILLS NEGLECTED BEAR CUB

A zoo in Switzerland is the latest to be embroiled in controversy, after it not only killed a healthy bear cub but will now stuff and display it to teach children that "nature can be cruel." Details of the fate of the baby brown bear, known only as Cub 4, come on the heels of outrage over the killing by Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo of a young male giraffe named Marius and four lions. The Dahlholzli Zoo in the Swiss city of Bern said it decided to put down the bear cub after its father, named Misha, mauled its sibling to death and threatened to do the same to Cub 4. According to a media release, the zoo initially decided not to interfere with the bears' "natural" behavior. But when it was observed that the mother, Masha, had begun neglecting Cub 4 and that the father was roughing it up too, zoo staff decided in April it would be kinder to kill the youngster. The zoo announced that the cub, whose remains were deep-frozen, would be thawed out and handed over to an expert taxidermist to be stuffed.

07/07/2014 YOUNG GORILLAS CAUGHT DISMANTLING POACHERS' SNARES

In the wild, gorillas are turning into primitive engineers as the newest field findings show that some of these large primates have taught themselves how to dismantle poaching traps in Africa. "It's just amazing", says Dr. Patricia Wright, a Primatologist at Stony Brook University in New York with over 27 years anthropological experience. "One of the most extraordinary things that has just happened is that very young gorillas, that are just four years old, have started to take apart traps and snares so that poachers can't catch gorillas." In Rwanda, four young gorillas were seen disabling a poachers' snare intended to kill gorillas and other animals. These gorillas sprung into action after the same snare killed an elderly gorilla. Adult gorillas have been seen destroying snares and poaching traps in the past, but scientists have never seen this kind of activity in gorillas at such a young age. This sighting suggests not only unexpected cognitive skill but also a level of empathy for other animals.

07/04/2014 MORRISSEY SHARES HIS NEW SONG "THE BULLFIGHTER DIES"

Musician and animal rights activist, Morrissey, has just released a new song "The Bullfighter Dies," alongside a spoken word video from his upcoming record.  His latest addition to the album "The Bullfighter Dies," examines the cruelty and exploitation towards animals used in the sport of bullfighting. In the song, Morrissey takes the side of the innocent animal that is thrown into the ring, and forced to perform without any choice of his or her own.

07/03/2014 IDAHO DAIRY WORKER SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY

A former employee at a south-central Idaho dairy has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and two years of probation after an undercover video shot by an animal rights group showed workers stomping, dragging and beating cows inside a milking barn. The Times-News reports that 40-year-old Javier Victor Rojas-Loayza received the sentence Wednesday in 5th District Court. Judge Calvin Campbell suspended 170 days and gave one day credit. He ordered the remaining nine days be spent on a sheriff's work detail. Rojas-Loayza must also pay $475 in fines and fees, and is banned from herding or supervising animals during his probation. Rojas-Loayza pleaded guilty in May to misdemeanor animal abuse following events recorded in the video by a member of Mercy for Animals who got a job at Bettencourt Dairies' Dry Creek Dairy in Hansen. Luis Bettencourt sold the dairy earlier this year.

07/02/2014 ICELAND KILLS FIRST FIN WHALE OF THE SEASON

Conservation groups are calling on the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and its member governments to condemn Iceland's commercial whale hunt following confirmation that the Icelandic whaling company Hvalur hf has killed yet another endangered fin whale. The whale was killed off Iceland's west coast and landed on June 17 at the company's processing station in Hvalfjörður, less than an hour's drive from the capital Reykjavik. The kill, the first of the 2014 season, coincides with a working party meeting of the European Union Environment Council in preparation for the meeting of the IWC in September. NGOs are pushing for governments to take a strong stand against Icelandic whaling ahead of, and during, the IWC meeting.

07/01/2014 CHINA REMOVES ANIMAL TESTING REQUIREMENT FOR COSMETICS

Big news from China! The country has effectively removed its requirement for cosmetics to be tested on animals in order to be approved for sale. While that doesn't mean the end of suffering for lab rats and rabbits everywhere, activists are hopeful it is the start of a new, kinder era. Humane Society International is one of the major agencies behind the Be Cruelty-Free campaign in China. They have been pushing for the mandated animal testing policy instated in 2012 to be reversed. The requirement forced companies like Avon and Estée Lauder who did not use the cruel methods of research, to start using them in order to still be able to sell to the large Chinese market. Experts are warning, however, that just because the law has changed, that doesn't mean all brands will immediately stop testing on animals. So maybe not overnight, but soon. We’ll take the baby steps towards a cruelty free market.
