02/27/2015 BEEF PRODUCERS SAY OBAMA IS TRYING TO KILL THEIR INDUSTRY

Lawmakers from cattle producing states are seeing red following a 571-page federal report that that encourages Americans to go green. A panel of nutrition experts recruited by the Obama administration to craft the newest dietary guidelines suggested last week that the government should consider the environment when deciding what people should eat. The report, which was presented to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, bills itself as a way to "transform the food system" and that's got a lot of people in the heartland and those elected to represent them in Washington fuming. The report, which is open for public comment for 45 days, will be used by the government not only to mold dietary guidelines but also used as the basis for government food assistance programs as well as school lunch programs, worth an estimated $16 billion annually. The North American Meat Institute slammed the report, calling it "flawed" and "nonsensical." Members of the meat industry as well as those from soda makers, say the panel has gone "beyond its scope."

The Danish government has banned the religious slaughter of animals for the production of halal and kosher meat. The ban became a law on February 22 and was termed anti-Semitic by a few petitioners. 02/25/2015 VEGAN LEATHER IS A HIT WITH A NEW GENERATION

They called it "pleather" when Michael Jackson donned plasticky, synthetic leather in his early moon-walking days. The fabric is now a hit with a new generation. With the help of science, new faux animal hides have arrived with a new, hip name: vegan leather. Luxe brands such as Stella McCartney and Joseph Altuzarra have sent vegan leather jackets and bags down the runway. Major department stores are increasing their offerings. And independent designers cater to those seeking guilt-free fashions. Demand is especially strong among more eco-conscious millennial shoppers. Fake leather is still usually made by coating plastic on fabric. But as textile technology has evolved, mills can churn out materials that look and feel like the real thing but with a greater array of colors and patterns. At the same time, more Americans are turning to veganism or vegetarianism — about one-eighth of the population over age 18. Two-thirds of vegans or vegetarians say protecting animals is a big motivator for their diets.

The Whale and Dolphin Protection Forum in Hagen (WDSF) filed a criminal complaint. The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office together with the Central Customs Office confiscated the whale meat which was still available from the original seven kilograms and initiated criminal proceedings due to the illegal export, import or transit of goods and the offence against the Federal Nature Conservation Act.

The software was developed by FAO in collaboration with the University of Vigo in Spain. CITES and the Government of Japan provided financial support.

02/20/2015 STARBUCKS NOW OFFERS COCONUT MILK ON ITS MENU

Coconut milk is like soy milk's younger, cooler competition in the non-dairy market, and it made its Starbucks debut on February 17. Starbucks hopes its coconut milk alternative, which is certified vegan, will fair well with those who have dietary restrictions, or for those who are simply "curious." Though coconut milk has less protein than soy milk, it's generally used by people with tree nut allergies or, as stated above, for those who live a vegan lifestyle. According to a Starbucks press release, demand's been through the roof, so customers might not mind paying an extra 60 cents for their coconut milk.

02/19/2015 INVESTORS PREPARE FOR THE "DEATH OF MEAT"

Meat consumption is declining at great rates and with a new USDA dietary guideline around the corner, the "death of meat" could be impending so investors are adjusting their portfolio accordingly. According to the online investing guide Street Authority, people holding stock in meat producers should beware and consider how the rising number of vegetarians could impact their finances. The Department of Agriculture reports that current meat consumption is 101 pounds, a 15 percent decrease in the last ten years and two thirds of what it once was in the 1970s. The numbers are expected to lower even more once the USDA dietary guidelines for 2015 are published. According to the Washington Post, a draft of it encourages people to eat more of a plant-based diet since it has a much lower impact on the environment. As for meat producers and those holding stock for them, they shouldn't only be prepared for the general public to follow the government's advice but for a whole new generation of vegetarians that could grow up eating less or no meat in public schools.

02/18/2015 MASSIVE DONATION FOR A PERFECT ANTI-WHALING SHIP

With an unprecedented donation now secure, the conservation group Sea Shepherd looks to invest in a powerful piece of machinery to patrol the ocean. The maritime activist organization was been awarded €8.3 million ($11.8 million) at the Good Money Gala in Amsterdam via the Dutch Postcode Lottery (that since 1989 has been raising money to help those groups "working for a fairer, greener world.") With the aid, Sea Shepherd will endeavor to put the money towards a brand new ship that can better effectively fight poaching. It is the largest donation the famed organization has ever received. Prior to this endowment, Sea Shepherd reported it had budgetary restrictions preventing it from securing a unique, faster vessel. Since launching anti-whaling campaigns in 2002, Sea Shepherd has used re-purposed ships in their fight, but have been often dogged by an inability to keep pace with faster whalers.

02/13/2015 NATIVE AMERICANS GATHER IN MONTANA TO PROTEST SLAUGHTER OF YELLOWSTONE BISON

Native American activists gathered in Montana's capital on Tuesday to protest the deaths of hundreds of Yellowstone National Park bison killed this year to ease the worries of Montana ranchers about a cattle disease carried by many park buffalo. The demonstration marked a week of protests over federal-state management of Yellowstone bison that entails culling the herd each winter when some animals cross from the park into neighboring Montana in search of food. The iconic hump-backed animals once roamed by the tens of millions west of the Mississippi until hunting campaigns reduced their numbers to the fewer than 50 that found safe harbor at Yellowstone in the early 20th century. Under an agreement between the park and the states surrounding Yellowstone - Montana, Wyoming and Idaho - hundreds of straying bison can be killed each year through slaughter and regulated hunting. The practice has inflamed bison advocates like the Buffalo Field Campaign and some members of tribes in Montana and the Pacific Northwest.

Animal rights campaigners are fighting to save two blind alcoholic bears in Russia, as rescue centers across Europe turn down offers to take them in. Their condition deteriorated as customers were allowed to feed them junk food and alcohol. Anna Kogan, founder of the Big Hearts Foundation which is fighting to save the animals, told The Independent the condition of the bears was "truly appalling." Although she has reached out to many European animal centerss, all eventually turned Ms Kogan's request down because of their alcohol dependency. "It's very expensive to look after bears in this condition, and many centers just don't have the funds," she explained.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a yellow labrador from an icy lake in Frankfort, Michigan on Tuesday. The Frankfort Coast Guard were in the middle of their morning meeting when someone happened to spot a dog dive into the frigid waters of Lake Betsie. The meeting was adjourned and Petty Officer Tim Putnam and an ice rescue crew then rushed to save the dog. The dog, who was nicknamed Betsie by her rescuers, was then taken to Benzie County Animal Shelter where she was examined and cared for. Despite not wearing a collar or being microchipped, her guardian was found. It turns out that Betsie's real name is Bailey, and that she had gone missing in the morning and had traveled over eight miles to the lake. Thanks to the brave efforts of the Coast Guard, her story had a warm, happy ending.

Country singer Hunter Hayes has a new love in his life. The "Wanted" singer knew what he wanted when he spotted the retired racing pup who he recently adopted from the Greyhound Pets of America. "This is Cole," Hayes told his fans on his YouTube channel with Cole resting behind him on a couch. "He's a retired racing Greyhound. He's awesome. He runs really fast — really fast." To give his fans a glimpse as to how fast Cole really is, Hayes included a clip of Cole racing around the backyard. But clearly Hayes has fallen for Cole's other, many, wonderful attributes, too. "He's got incredible sight, he's incredibly patient and he's really mellow," he adds. "He's a good boy." Thumbs up for the singer's efforts on not only adopting a rescue dog, but adopting a race dog, too. The so-called "sport" treats greyhounds like running machines with many suffering and dying from the races.

02/05/2015 MORRISSEY CANCELS CONCERT AFTER VENUE REFUSES TO GO VEG

Morrissey was scheduled to perform in Iceland, but cancelled the concert after the Harpa concert hall in Reykjavik refused to meet his vegetarian demands. The vegan former Smiths' front man doesn't even speak to meat-eaters so when the concert hall said it wouldn't stop selling meat on the day of his performance, his cancellation wasn't exactly a surprise. "I love Iceland and I have waited a long time to return," he told the True To You fan site. "But I shall leave the Harpa Concert Hall to their cannibalistic flesh-eating bloodlust." Morrissey has cancelled concerts over the same issue before. His song 'Meat is Murder' has shocked audiences during his live shows as he played images of slaughterhouses behind him on the screen.

Since the documentary came out in 2013 showing how the animals held in captivity at SeaWorld suffer to provide entertainment to an uninformed audience, the amusement park has lost multiple contracts with other companies, been the target of protests and boycotts.
