11/30/2015 ANONYMOUS HACKERS TARGET ICELAND SITES IN WHALING PROTEST
Activist hackers from the Anonymous collective have claimed responsibility for bringing down five government websites in Iceland in a protest against whale-hunting by the North Atlantic nation. The sites, which included the prime minister's official website and that of the environment and interior ministries, went offline on Friday and remained down until about midday on Saturday. In an anti-whaling video posted on social media, activists called for people to hack websites linked to Iceland to protest persistent commercial hunting despite an international moratorium. On a new Twitter account devoted to the campaign, screenshots showing the sites down were published late on Friday by activists who said they belonged to the loose Anonymous collective. The government made no comment about the outage.
11/27/2015 JESSE EISENBERG AND FAMILY CELEBRATE "THANKSLIVING"
In a recent interview with Conan O'Brien, actor Jesse Eisenberg talked about how his family puts a compassionate – and vegan — spin on Thanksgiving. Though Eisenberg claims to be "95% vegetarian", he shared with O'Brien that his family celebrates a vegan Thanksgiving meal, which they so adorably call, "Thanksliving." The "Social Network" star told the comedian that his family adopts turkeys each year and honors them by displaying their pictures on the dinner table as they chow down on their plant-based feast. Then, his sister reads a piece on the terrible conditions in which turkeys are kept until they are brutally slaughtered. If everyone was aware of the horrific conditions that 67 million of these smart, inquisitive birds must endure for your holiday meal, more families would happily reach for the tofu like the Eisenbergs do.
11/26/2015 LOYAL DOG STANDS GUARD BY STRAY FRIEND KILLED BY CAR
A heartbreaking photo of a devoted dog from Dallas who refused to leave the side of his dying canine friend has gone viral. The loyal dog, a Great Pyrenees, stood guard by his dying friend on a road running alongside Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery in Texas. The stray dog was reportedly hit by a car and it appears the Great Pyrenees dragged his friend from the street. The tragic photo was snapped by passer-by Samuel Flores and posted on Facebook, which was shared by local animal advocate Julie Fennell. Fennell, who rushed to the scene with a friend, said the devastated animal had been there for hours, though they couldn’t determine the dog’s history or why he was so loyal to his deceased pal.
11/25/2015 FRANCE BANS IMPORTS OF LION HUNT TROPHIES
France has banned the import of lion heads, paws and skins as hunters' trophies, nearly four months after the killing of Zimbabwe's most famous lion by an American trophy hunter sparked international outrage. In July, conservationists and MEPs called for an EU-wide ban on the import of lion trophies following the death of Cecil the lion at the hands of a Minnesotan dentist near one of Zimbabwe's national parks. France is the first EU state to implement such a ban. In March, Australia also banned their import. Between 2010 and the 2013, the last year for which data is available, more than 100 such lion trophies were imported to France.
11/24/2015 SWEDISH HOTELS BAN BACON FROM BREAKFASTS
Sausages and bacon have been taken off the menu at some Swedish hotels after the owner of one of Scandinavia's biggest chains yielded to the influence of his environmental campaigner wife. "This is a new breakfast concept for our Comfort hotels," Petter Stordalen, the billionaire owner of the Nordic Choice Hotel Group, told Norwegian news site Hegnar.no. "The focus on sustainability permeates what we do in Nordic Choice." Stordalen's company's new green, healthy menu has been introduced across Scandinavia, including in a number of Swedish hotels. The menu, which has been developed in collaboration with Dr Gunhild Stordalen's EAT Food Forum, offers healthy, plant-based alternatives to the greasy breakfasts regularly served up to business travellers. As well as removing sausages and bacon, the menu has also been stripped of any cereals or cheese which include palm oil among their ingredients, to reduce the destruction of the rainforest.
11/23/2015 THE NIH IS RETIRING ALL OF ITS RESEARCH CHIMPANZEES
The National Institutes of Health has announced that it's bringing its chimpanzee testing program to an entire halt, sending its 50 remaining primates to sanctuaries. The NIH used to have a much larger chimp program, but it retired 310 of them in 2013. At the time, it kept 50 reserve animals to be used in case of emergency. But the NIH director Francis Collins tells Nature that only one request was issued for use of those reserve chimps in the last two years, and at any rate that application was later withdrawn. The chimps will find new homes in sanctuaries across the U.S..
11/20/2015 STRAY CATS TAKE OVER G20 STAGE
Cats really are taking over the world. Three stray cats managed to breach security and literally upstage world leaders at the G20 summit in Antalya, Turkey on Sunday. A live feed from Turkey showed the brave cats storming the stage, sniff around. In most groups, there is evidently a leader amongst the kitties who lead the charge across the stage. After surveying the stage, and realizing it was pretty boring for a cat, they soon wandered off stage. Unsurprisingly, the cats were a hit online. Soon after the cats left, G20 leaders like Barack Obama, Vladmir Putin and Justin Trudeau filled the stage.
11/19/2015 A GROUP OF KIDS ARE SUING OBAMA OVER CLIMATE CHANGE
A group of 21 children and teenagers are suing the Obama administration over climate change, which Slate calls "next important civil rights struggle of the 21st century." The kids aren't going it alone, however. Their "guardian" is James Hansen, the former chief climate scientist for NASA. The lawsuit argues that the government’s inaction on climate change is a violation of their right to life, liberty and property. They are requesting the President to act immediately to protect the earth for the benefit of Americans, now and in the future. The case is being handled by Our Children's Trust, an Oregon-based nonprofit that, according to Slate, has been pursing this kind of "strategy" for years. The case is seen more symbolic than anything, but a lawsuit that is seeking comprehensive, science-based legislation to return atmospheric carbon dioxide to 350 parts per million by the end of a century is something that we can all get behind of.
11/18/2015 EUROPE'S LARGEST ANTI-FUR EVENT OPENED BY MAYOR OF OSLO
On November 14, NOAH - Norway's largest animal rights organization and Fur Free Alliance member, hosted march against fur – an event that gathered 13,000 people from 24 Norwegian cities. The march has been an annual event for twelve years, and has become Europe's largest anti-fur event. Every year thousands of people march in the streets of Oslo, as well as in other Norwegian cities, demanding a ban of fur farming in Norway. Despite the delays, many Norwegian politicians are strongly against fur – some of them are speaking at the event, and the speeches were started by the mayor of Oslo, Marianne Borgen. The ban on fur farming has gained support from the majority of the Norwegian population, the Norwegian fashion industry, several professional bodies such as the Norwegian Veterinary Association, five political parties and 200 celebrities.

A burger in New York City has just been named the best in the world – and it doesn't even contain any meat. The famous $6 Superiority Burger, which has a fully vegan patty, has just been named the best the world has to offer by GQ magazine. People have been raving about the taste and texture of the chunky nutty burger but no one knows exactly what's in it – just that no cows were harmed in its making. It comes sandwiched in a bun with iceberg lettuce and tomato on top, plus dill pickle and sauce. The owner of the new East Village Superiority Burger joint, Brooks Headley, wants to keep his vegan burger a secret so he won't divulge its ingredients. The former punk rock drummer-turned-chef said the act of eating a burger is not just about the patty and whether it's beef or not. "The act of eating a burger is so iconic and so American, and it's not just about the patty," he says. "It's the squish of the bun, the crunch of the lettuce and the tang of the ketchup – there's something primally satisfying in all that."
11/16/2015 EVEN MORE ALARMING STUDY LINKING MEAT AND CANCER
Remember when the World Health Organization said bacon causes bowel cancer and red meat "probably" does? Science is really on a roll lately, because now there's news that doctors at the University of Texas's MD Anderson Cancer Center have tied all meat to another type of cancer, of the kidney this time. Their conclusion, published in the journal Cancer: Eating meat carries a higher risk of kidney cancer, and people who grill it first — red or white, so T-bones, turkey legs, chicken breasts, it doesn't matter — have the greatest risk of all. To make things worse still, they also say two genetic mutations in particular were "significantly associated" with kidney cancer.
11/13/2015 INDONESIA ORANGUTANS ATTACKED BY VILLAGERS AFTER FLEEING FIRES
An endangered Borneo orangutan and her baby escaped from raging fires in Indonesia that destroyed their forest habitat - only to be attacked by angry villagers. The malnourished mother and her youngster were found distressed and clinging to one another when they were saved by International Animal Rescue as locals hurled rocks at them and tried to tie them up. Many apes have recently fled their forest homes which have been engulfed by fires set to clear land and headed to villages to find food, but locals view them as pests and there has been an increase in human-animal conflict.
11/12/2015 DUTCH COURT CONFIRMS BAN ON MINK FARMING IN THE NETHERLANDS
On Nov 10 morning the Dutch court announced its final decision on the appeal of the Government against the Dutch mink breeders. To the immense relief of the Fur Free Alliance, Eurogroup for Animals and the Dutch members Bont voor Dieren and Dierenbescherming, this victorious ruling is on the side of six million mink currently farmed in the Netherlands. The judge concluded that the general interest weighs more heavily than the economic interest of a minor group of mink farmers. The final verdict means that the fur industry in The Netherlands will definitely end in 2024: the mink ban is back in force.
11/09/2015 EMIRATES TAKES TO THE SKY IN JUMBO MESSAGE AGAINST ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE
Emirates has transformed two A380s with a special livery from United for Wildlife featuring endangered animals, in support of the fight against the illegal wildlife trade. The unique livery is adorned with the top six wildlife species that are threatened by poaching and illicit trade. Thanks to this global collaboration, the airline — which is considered to be the best in the industry — is now literally spreading the word across the world about the threat of the illegal wildlife trade. "The world is in a global poaching crisis, and everyone has to do their part to stop this, before it is too late," said Emirates Airline president Tim Clark. "Emirates believes that the global transport industry, including airlines, can play a significant role to break the supply chain of illegal wildlife trade."
11/06/2015 U.S. PASSES COMPREHENSIVE ANTI-POACHING BILL
With an increase in poaching over the last few years, and a particularly high profile animal death this past summer, the U.S. government is looking to take a prominent role in fighting global wildlife trafficking. The House of Representatives on Monday passed the Global Anti-Poaching Act, a bill that will help facilitate better prosecution of poachers, instill tougher penalties, and raise money to combat the heinous act. "This bipartisan bill provides additional tools and resources to curb illegal killing of some of the world's most iconic and at-risk species and trafficking in their parts," said Wayne Pacelle, head of the Humane Society of the United States, in a statement. "Poaching is a global crisis, and the world needs U.S. leadership on the issue."
11/05/2015 RYAN REYNOLDS NARRATES WILDLIFE DOCUMENTARY "HUNTWATCH"
Ryan Reynolds is lending his voice to a new documentary film about Canadian seal hunting called "Huntwatch", which is premiering this month at DOC NYC. Directed by Brant Backlund, the film follows Brian Davis, a 78-year-old activist who dedicated his life to putting an end to the senseless and cruel killing of seals in Canada. Davis’s horrific images and stories of slaughtered seal pups led to international outrage resulting in the European Parliament banning the import of baby white seal products in 1980. However, the Canadian government has now revived the hunt and has allowed hunters to target slightly older seals who are just starting to shed their fluffy white fur. At about two weeks old, they are now legal to kill. Produced by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the doc explores the ongoing saga of the seal hunt that unfolds each year by exposing its cruelty while bringing the audience close to the seals in their natural environment.

There is a joy in Chinchi's preelection headquarters because Fani Stipkovic, the hottest journalist in Europe, decided to come and support Chinchi's election rally which will be held on November 5 at 11 A.M. on Zagreb's main square. In 2007 Fani participated in the Animal Friends Croatia anti-fur campaign. Chinchilla Chinchi is very pleased to get support for her candidacy for the Parliament because she wishes to convey an important message. Croatia is trying to "push" legislative approval of breeding chinchillas for fur, eight years after the brutal and backward practice has been banned. Fani will not allow it, nor will Sanja Dolezal, Dubravko Simenc, Nika Fleiss, Bojan Jambrosic, Kresimir Dolencic, Robert Boskovic, Ivan Decak and many other celebrities and citizens who have given their support for the campaign.
11/03/2015 GUINNESS GOES VEGAN-FRIENDLY
After 256 years, Ireland's famous stout, Guinness, is going vegan-friendly after its company vowed to stop using fish bladders in its brewing process. The move is great news for vegetarians and vegans who have been been petitioning the company for years to do away with their centuries-old filtration process so they could enjoy a pint. Right now, Guinness uses isinglass, a gelatin obtained from fish, in its filtration system at St James's Gate brewery in Ireland. Though most of the isinglass is removed, the company has said they can't "guarantee 100 percent is removed." A spokesman for Guinness told The Times that the firm would now look at using a new filtration plant that would be vegan-friendly, and that they hope the system would be in place in 2016. According to the brewer, Guinness sells its products in more than 150 countries globally, with 10 million glasses of Guinness consumed every day.
11/02/2015 ENGLISH SOCCER TEAM IS "WORLD'S FIRST VEGAN FOOTBALL CLUB"
The World Health Organization report has rocked meat lovers around the world - but it could not have come at a better time for a soccer club that has championed the idea of vegetarianism. Forest Green Rovers will go one step further Saturday when the club goes exclusively vegan. The team, which this season is leading the English fifth tier, says the initiative will make it "the world's first vegan football club." Having already dropped meat from its menu in 2011, Forest Green is now doing away with fish and milk products to provide a totally vegan matchday experience for fans.
