02/29/2016 CROATIAN CITIZENS SUPPORT FUR FARMING BAN

Last week Croatian citizens gathered on the central square of the capital city Zagreb to make a public statement against chinchilla fur farming. In 2007 the Croatian government decided to ban fur farming with a phase-out period of 10 years. Recent lobby efforts of chinchilla breeders have focused on an exemption of the ban for chinchilla farming, which, paradoxically is the only remaining type of fur farming in Croatia. The event in Zagreb, organised by Croatian Fur Free Alliance member Animal Friends Croatia, made it clear that the vast majority of Croatian citizens does not think fur farming is acceptable. An increasing majority of the European population finds it unjustifiable to subject animals to prolonged suffering for trivial ends, such as fur coats or fashion accessories. (furfreealliance.com)

It is dreadfully inhumane!", said Butler, who rescued many cats in his private life. (vegnews.com)

He also points out that, in order to obtain one callorie from beef, 20 times more water is needed than for obtaining one callorie from the plant-based food. (www.takepart.com)

02/24/2016 PAMELA ANDERSON SAYS VEGAN PRISON DIET CAN HELP LOUISIANA'S BUDGET

Former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson thinks Gov. John Bel Edwards can help balance Louisiana's $940 million budget deficit by serving all-vegan meals to prisoners in the state's correction system. She's even offering to cook and serve a lunch for the inmates herself. That's according to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which sent out a news release Friday (Feb. 19) pitching the plan as providing a $620,000 savings. Anderson said her estimate is based on a vegetarian diet an Arizona county jail put into place, which Anderson said saved that jail $273,000. In addition to modeling and acting, Anderson has become known for her animal activism in recent years.

02/23/2016 NEW YORK MAYOR PUSHING FOR BAN ON PUPPY MILLS

A mayor in New York is the first in the state to push for a local ban on puppy mill puppies and kittens from being sold in pet stores. Mayor Norman Rosenblum for the Village of Mamaroneck is banning puppy mill animals and mandating the sale of only shelter animals. "We are responsible for the welfare of our animals and our citizens, and this law protects both," Rosenblum said of the new proposed law. More than 120 towns nationwide passed similar laws, including Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago. New York State currently has no such law. Up until 2014, New York localities were prohibited from passing animal welfare laws. That changed when Governor Cuomo signed the Puppy Mill Bill allowing towns to pass their own laws. The proposal was met with critics who sent a notice to the mayor in fear of being sued by the Pet Store lawsuit. Rosenblum is determined to proceed with the hearing, saying, "We cannot fear passing legitimate laws that protect our society because of threats of lawsuit." (newyork.cbslocal.com)

02/22/2016 PORTLAND GETS 100% VEGAN SUPERMARKET

The world's first and largest vegan grocery store chain, Veganz, has announced that it's going to be popping up in the US city later this year. The supermarket has already laid brick in Berlin, Frankfurt, Prague and several other European destinations since it's founding in 2011, housing ten locations in total. The brand plans to also capitalize on the American hot spot with a clothing store and restaurant. German founder Jan Bredack envisioned a store where he wasn't segregated to a single aisle. So, after experiencing vegan options during his travels around the U.S. and Russia, Veganz was born.  Veganz imports goods from 30 countries across the globe, selling thousands of vegan products. Vegans make up about six percent of the American population, but Bredack notes that his stores appeal to omnivores as well. He estimates that 80 percentage of shoppers don't classify themselves as vegan, or even vegetarian. (ecorazzi.com)

02/18/2016 ARE VEGANS PROPELLING MARKET CHANGE?

For a country known as the land of milk and honey, Israeli shoppers seem to be taking a step to the vegan side more and more. A Nielsen's report showed a 100 percent jump in the amount of soy products Israeli shoppers bought between 2012 to 2015. Meanwhile, a number of meat and dairy products showed decreases. Sales for ready-to-eat meat dishes saw the biggest dip in sales, of 48%, followed by a 26% drop in long-lasting UHT milk and a 25% drop in margarine sales. According to the results of a market research survey, the report also said the percentage of people shopping at health food stores went up from 3% in 2008 to 14% in 2016.

02/16/2016 BABY FASHION WITH TOXIC FUR WITHDRAWN FROM ITALIAN MARKET

At the end of last year, the Italian organization LAV published the results of a study that demonstrated the presence of toxic substances at levels above permitted on clothing items containing fur. These were clothes for children and by following the evidence, the Italian Ministry of Health at the end of January ordered the withdrawal of dangerous products from the market. In the clothing brand Baby Blumarine, tests have shown excessive presence of hexavalent chromium which is carcinogenic and can cause allergic reactions. Other dangerous substances were found and the clothing manufacturer Woolrich and D & G, intended for children up to a year and a half of age. After the first similar study in Italy in 2013, the organization LAV achieved its temporary, but permanent ban on the sale of children's clothing items with fur.

02/15/2016 150,000 PENGUINS DIE AFTER GIANT ICEBERG RENDERS COLONY LANDLOCKED

An estimated 150,000 Adelie penguins living in Antarctica have died after an iceberg the size of Rome became grounded near their colony, forcing them to trek 60km to the sea for food. The penguins of Cape Denison in Commonwealth Bay used to live close to a large body of open water. However, in 2010 a colossal iceberg measuring 2,900 square kilometres became trapped in the bay, rendering the colony effectively landlocked. Penguins seeking food must now waddle 60km to the coast to fish. Over the years, the arduous journey has had a devastating effect on the size of the colony. Since 2011 the colony of 160,000 penguins has shrunk to just 10,000, according to research carried out by the Climate Change Research Centre at Australia's University of New South Wales. Scientists predict the colony will be gone in 20 years unless the sea ice breaks up or the giant iceberg, dubbed B09B, is dislodged.

02/12/2016 NYC RESTAURANTEUR CHANGES 15 BARS & RESTAURANTS TO BE VEGAN

The New York restauranteur has had environmental waste and factory farming on his mind, and now he's planning to make his fifteen bars and restaurants animal free. The first to make the switch will be his tiki bar named Mother of Pearl. Animal products will be eliminated from the menu on February 14. Ravi DeRossi has been in the business for eleven years, garnering a following for restaurants likes The Bourgeois Pig that feature cheese fondue and charcuterie plates. It'll be reopening as a vegan wine and tapas bar called LadyBird as part of his vegan transformation, this summer. DeRossi says he was a vegetarian and vegan long before his time in the hospitality industry. However, it was his cat's terminal illness that helped him reevaluate his current choices. "You don't realize that the average restaurateur does three times more destruction [to the environment] than the average person," he said. "I have 15 restaurants and bars. It started to weigh on me." 02/11/2016 MILK MAKES KIDS SICK

Six kids have contracted E. coli, with four of them confirmed to have been consuming Organic Pastures raw milk. The California Department of Public Health reported that lab tests done on six children showed the same unique strain of Shiga-toxin producing E. coli O157, which is responsible for severe disease, including bloody diarrhea and a type of kidney failure. Some of these children have required hospitalization. Mark McAfee, founder and CEO of the Fresno-based dairy says "the scientists always tell us that E. coli comes from manure. But we had a cow with E. coli on the inside of her udder. That's never happened before." Organic Pastures have faced eight recalls as far back as 2006, for various food borne pathogens. Parents would be wise to think about introducing their children to dairy-free milk options to get calcium, where manure soaked udders aren't part of the picture. (ecorazzi.com)

02/09/2016 RUSSIAN SUBS RESPONSIBLE FOR SPERM WHALE DEATHS ON BRITISH SHORES?

Sonar from Russian submarines operating in the North Atlantic could be to blame for the tragic rise in sperm whales beaching on British shores. According to conservationists, manmade sound waves can drown out the noises that marine mammals rely on for their survival, causing serious injury and even death. The finger is now being pointed at Moscow amid reports of increased activity by state-of-the-art Russian submarines. It comes after another sperm whale was stranded on the Norfolk coast - the sixth on British shores in recent weeks. Sperm whales would usually be living around the west coast of Norway, where they feed on squid. But they appear to have become disorientated during their journey south, possibly as a result of underwater military activity. Dr Simon Ingram, lecturer in marine conservation at Plymouth University, said: "This is a very large number compared to what we've seen before. This incident is quite extreme even historically, even going back to pre-whaling records. It is potentially very significant."

02/08/2016 REMEMBERING JIM MORRIS, VEGAN BODYBUILDER

Jim Morris, one of the first major vegan bodybuilders, passed away on Jan 28 in California at the age of 80. A vegetarian for thirty years and a vegan for fifteen, Morris turned the fitness community over on its head when he first declared he had stopped eating meat, and subsequently all animal products. He was a former titleholder of Mr. America. In his seventies, Mr. Morris did photoshoots demonstrating his muscular physique, shocking people around the world who were able to see just how buff this man could be in his middle age and as a vegan. Mr. Morris was a wonderful example of how vegans do get enough protein, and served as an important voice for fitness enthusiasts who love animals. (ecorazzi.com)

02/05/2016 VEGAN KIDS ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES

Vegan kids are taking over the world, and they're bright, compassionate, and kind! Youtube personality Bite Size Vegan, AKA Emily Moran Barwick, spoke with twenty-four vegan kids and their parents from all over the world in her latest video "My Parents Won't Let Me Go Vegan!" The speakers ranged in age from tiny toddlers to teenagers, but all of them were over-the-moon happy about their vegan lifestyles. "Our bodies shouldn't be graveyards for dead animals," says Izzy, a seven year old from Massachusetts, "They should be filled with a bunch of food like falafel... everything vegan." Jace, a four year old says he is vegan "because I love the animals, and save the planet." "Number one thing is to do your research," said Kevin, a confident thirteen year old. While speaking about families he said, "when you can prove to them being vegan has no negative impacts on you or anyone else, then they will be more accepting of it." Truly, kids are creating something amazing with their own vegan activism. (ecorazzi.com)

02/04/2016 EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY USED 200,000 ANIMALS FOR RESEARCH IN 2014

Animal rights groups have condemned Edinburgh University bosses after it was revealed that over 200,000 animals were tested upon during 2014. A freedom of information request revealed a total of 200,861 animals were used for testing over the 12-month period, the second-highest number in the UK behind only the University of Oxford. Reports showed that in 2013 Edinburgh performed testing on the highest number of animals in the UK. Despite facing heavy criticism, these latest statistics show they have failed to change their approach. Although the university has claimed the use of animals is justified on scientific, ethical and legal grounds, campaigners have described their use as "archaic", claiming that such test force animals to endure "painful and stressful suffering". 02/03/2016 VEGAN ACTIVISTS SHOCK PUBLIC IN NICE

Over 100 animal rights activists from Collectif ILA (Indignés pour la Libération Animale) gathered on Jan 30 in Nice, France to march for the abolition of meat. The activists marched, chanting and brandishing graphic posters of animals being slaughtered, to Place Massena, the city's main square. There they staged a live performance which included actors posing as animals being slaughtered by a sadistic "butcher." Hundreds of people crowded around to watch the street theater, which included a macabre scene of a dinner table, formally set with a chandelier, at which three elegant young women pretended to feast on real pig intestines. The Nice March to Abolish Meat was coordinated with other "close all slaughterhouses" events in Paris and Lyons. The vegan movement is gaining ground in France and animal rights issues are a hot topic in the local press. In a recent French study, 35 percent of respondents claim they are very concerned about the well-being of food animals and 26 percent claim to be concerned with food "scandals."

02/02/2016 TANZANIA ELEPHANT POACHERS KILL BRITISH HELICOPTER PILOT

A British helicopter pilot has been shot dead by elephant poachers in Tanzania, the conservation charity for which he was working has said. The Friedkin Conservation Fund said Roger Gower, from Birmingham, was tracking poachers on Friday in the Maswa Game Reserve. One of his colleagues said he had been shot as he flew near the carcass of one of three elephants killed by poachers. Pratik Patel, of the Friedkin Conservation Fund, said Mr Gower had been approaching the last of three elephants killed by poachers when he was shot. Mr Patel said Mr Gower's main role had been flying people between the different camps on the reserve where he worked, but he had also flown daily patrols to support ground staff in their work against poachers.

02/01/2016 16 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE US ARE NOW VEGAN OR VEGETARIAN!

In 2009, a tiny one percent of the US population reported eating vegetarian or vegan. Now, 5% of the United States population is vegetarian and half of those people are vegan. The rates have skyrocketed over the last five years and studies show the rates are climbing. The reason seems to involve a mix of various factors, with the largest impact coming from how much we have learned about commercial farming and animal treatment over the last five years. Approximately 42% of those who do not eat animal products say that they went vegan after they saw an educational film. Sixty-nine percent said they chose to eat a vegan diet to support the ethical treatment of animals. Forty-five percent say they transitioned into veganism over time and of all those who are vegan, 52% say they have been eating vegan for less than 10 years. This could be an indicator of the way the country has become more knowledgeable about the food supply over the last five years. Other factors involved in the veg transition indicate that by 2050 the U.S. may even become a vegan country – or at least have a majority of its people eating a vegan diet.
