11/29/2017 EUROPEAN BRAND DEBUTS VEGAN SHOES MADE FROM AIRBAGS

For its winter collection, Portugal-based vegan shoe brand NAE Vegan debuted a boot style made from upcycled nylon sourced from car airbags with soles crafted from old tires. The hand-stitched style uses animal-free glue and is more durable and comfortable than boots made with animal-based materials. Alex Pérez and his wife Paula started the company 10 years ago after identifying a gap in the market for stylish, comfortable vegan shoes. The brand also uses pineapple-based leather Piñatex in its designs and plans to debut new airbag-based styles (including sneakers and sandals) this summer. Ethical fashion brands have recently released vegan shoes made with novel, sustainable materials, including luxury shoe company VEERAH, which launched a shoe style made from upcycled apple peels earlier this month. 11/28/2017 UTAH PAYS $349,000 FOR UNFAIR AG-GAG LAW

The state of Utah agreed this week to pay $349,000 to animal-rights organizations to cover attorney fees and costs incurred in their battle to eliminate the state's "ag-gag" law—legislation that prevents documenting abuse on factory farms. Animal-rights organizations, including Animal Legal Defense Fund and PETA, united in 2013 to file a lawsuit in an effort to overturn Utah's standing ag-gag legislation. In July, Utah's US District Court Judge Robert Shelby overturned the state's 2012 law, stating that the legislation was unconstitutional because it violated free-speech rights protected by the First Amendment. In recent years, undercover investigations conducted by organizations such as MFA have led to increased public awareness regarding the plight of animals on factory farms and, subsequently, legislation that put stricter animal welfare practices in place nationwide. 11/27/2017 500 VIRGINIANS CAMP OUT TO GET NEW VEGAN NIKE SHOES

The release of vegan Nike shoe style Air Max 97 x Air Max 1 was cancelled this week after 500 eager sneaker fans (some of whom camped outside for several days) crowded a Nike store in Richmond, VA. The shoe—designed by local vintage store owner and vegan Sean Wotherspoon—won Nike's inaugural Vote Forward contest, in which fans voted on styles submitted by 12 fashion influencers tasked with re-imagining Nike's classic Air Max shoe. Wotherspoon spent several months promoting the shoes by driving a vintage Volkswagen bus painted in the same colors as his shoe style between Richmond and Los Angeles, giving away free vegan food along the way. Media outlet Fortune revealed that an early edition of the shoes sold for $96,000 on e-commerce platform eBay—with several pairs currently priced upwards of $2,000 per pair on the bidding site. Nike will announce a new, limited release date of the vegan style on social media in the near future, while a global release is scheduled for Air Max Day (March 26). (vegnews.com)

11/23/2017 NEARLY HALF OF AMERICANS WANT TO BAN SLAUGHTERHOUSES

A new survey conducted by nonprofit think tank Sentience Institute (SI)—in partnership with research firm Ipsos Group—found that Americans are supportive of banning all animal slaughterhouses. This October, a group of 1,094 adults were asked several survey questions related to factory farming, and 47 percent supported banning slaughterhouses, 33 percent supported banning all animal farming, and 69 percent identified animal agriculture as one of the most important social issues in the world today. The survey further revealed a disconnect between public perception and reality in terms of the pervasiveness of factory farms in the United States. While government census data shows that only one percent of animals live on non-factory farms, 75 percent of survey participants believed they consumed only humanely-raised animals. (vegnews.com)

11/22/2017 NEW YORK MAGAZINE CREATES VEGAN ENCYCLOPEDIA

New York Magazine published an extensive "vegan encyclopedia" this week, complete with photographs of beloved vegan food. Writers Robin Raisfeld and Rob Patronite compiled the guide, which begins with a history of veganism and explains how technology is playing a role in the movement’'s progress. The guide—which is aimed at omnivores—is organized alphabetically with entries such as "aquafaba" (the brine from chickpeas that mimics egg whites), "cheese" (listing a variety of artisanal vegan cheeses currently on the market), and "vegans, types of" (a humorous take on categories of vegans such as "ethical," "junk-food," and "part-time aka fairweather"). The encyclopedia also outlines a number of vegan restaurants in New York City, local vegan companies, and organizations fighting for animal rights. (vegnews.com)

11/20/2017 MILK CONSUMPTION DROPS BY 22 PERCENT SINCE 2000

A recent report by the United States Department of Agriculture shows that dairy consumption in the US dropped 22 percent between 2000 and 2016. The figures reveal that Americans now consume only 154 pounds of dairy milk per capita—down from 197 pounds in 2000. In a separate report, market research firm Packaged Facts advised that dairy companies recoup losses by looking to the lucrative plant-based milk industry. Several major dairy-focused brands have entered the plant-based industry, including international giant Danone, which recently acquired WhiteWave—the parent company of dairy-free brands Silk, So Delicious, Vega, and Alpro. 11/17/2017 15,000 SCIENTISTS URGE CITIZENS TO ADOPT PLANT-BASED DIET

A viewpoint article published by the Alliance of World Scientists (AWS) in October outlined the increasing importance of changing human behavior to avoid environmental destruction. The current article is an update to a 1992 paper published by the Union of Concerned Scientists warning the public that current human practices would soon lead to devastating conditions such as ocean acidification and dead zones, ozone depletion, decreased freshwater availability, marine-life depletion, forest loss, and biodiversity destruction. The new document builds on the previous warning, but with more urgency, by outlining how the aforementioned negative environmental trends have accelerated in the past 25 years. The warning—which was signed by 15,000 scientists from 184 countries—further recommends adopting and promoting a plant-based diet to reduce environmental degradation. (vegnews.com)

11/16/2017 ITALY BANS ALL ANIMAL CIRCUSES

The Italian Assembly of the Parliament signed a bill last week to ban all traveling animal shows and circuses in the country. Within one year, the nation—which currently has approximately 100 circuses that exploit 2,000 wild animals—will create regulations to implement the ban through a Ministerial decree. Animal-rights organization Animal Defenders International (ADI) worked with local organization Lega Anti Vivisezione (LAV) to educate Italian legislators about the cruelty involved in using animals for entertainment. The organizations held a workshop at the Italian senate that included a screening of Lion's Ark—a documentary of ADI's dramatic rescue of 25 lions previously held captive in Bolivian circuses. Italy is now the 41st country to ban wild animal circuses. (vegnews.com)

11/15/2017 SWEDISH YOUTUBE STAR MAKES WORLD'S LARGEST VEGAN CAKE

Swedish vlogger Therese Lindgren made the Guinness World Records' largest vegan cake last week at a vegetarian cooking school in Stockholm. Weighing in at 462.4 kilograms (1,019 pounds and six ounces), the semolina cake was held together with almond-cream frosting and featured strawberries, lemon, and soy whipped cream on top. All ingredients were provided by Scandinavian retail chain Coop—which was able to deliver more flour and soy yogurt immediately when the crew ran out of the essential ingredients in the middle of baking. Guinness judge Pravin Patel was present during the baking process—wherein the six bakers working on the cake wore shirts with the message "I love animals and love cake"—to adjudicate the largest vegan cake in the world. The cake–which fed 2,000 people—was partially eaten on-site while remainders were sent to an animal-rights event and a local retirement home. (vegnews.com)

11/14/2017 ERA OF LAB TESTING ON CHIMPANZEES OFFICIALLY OVER

A recent feature published in The New York Times declared that the era of chimpanzees used as research subjects in the US is officially over. In 2015, The National Institute of Health voiced that it would no longer support invasive biomedical research conducted on the animals and—thanks in large part to the efforts of medical network The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), and animal-rights organization The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)—chimpanzees began to be evacuated from laboratories and transferred into sanctuaries with the help of nonprofit Project Chimps. The Times predicts that in 50 years there will be no more more chimpanzees that need permanent homes outside of laboratories and the sanctuaries that house them will eventually be out of business, by design. Modern research methods—including the iChip, known as "human on a chip# technology—will soon replace animal testing in biomedical research. (vegnews.com)

11/13/2017 DAIRY PROFITS DROP 91 PERCENT AMIDST PLANT-BASED BOOM

Dairy brand Dean Foods released its third quarter fiscal report this week, which showed a 91-percent drop in profits. While Dean Foods reported an income of $14.53 million last year, the company made only $1.38 million this year, with a net sales slip to $1.94 billion compared to $1.96 billion last year. "Our initiatives to build strong brands and diversify our portfolio will build brand equity on Dairy Pure through new product innovation and enhanced consumer marketing," Dean Foods CEO Ralph Scozzafava said. The company is diversifying its dairy portfolio with plant-based brands to tap into the vegan market. Earlier this summer, Dean Foods invested a minority stake in flax-based vegan brand Good Karma Foods, a move the company hopes will see a return in coming months. (vegnews.com)

11/10/2017 WHOLE FOODS NAMES PLANT-BASED TECH AS TOP TREND

A trend report released this week compiled by global buyers and experts at Whole Foods Market named plant-based technology as a top trend to watch in 2018. "Plant-based diets and dishes continue to dominate the food world," the report states, "and now the tech industry has a seat at the table, too." Experts believe that the role of science in development of plant-based foods will push plant-based eating to the forefront of the food industry. "These new production techniques are also bringing some new varieties of nut milks and yogurts made from pili nuts, peas, bananas, macadamia nuts, and pecans," the report states. "Dairy-free indulgences [such as] vegan frosting, brownies, ice cream, brioche, and crème brûlée are getting so delicious, non-vegans won't know the difference—or they might choose them, anyway!" Whole Foods' predictions are in-line with last month's "Food + Beverage" report compiled by research firm Baum + Whiteman that stated plant-based foods would become a "mega trend" in 2018. 11/09/2017 ANIMAL-RIGHTS LEGEND HONORED BY LA CITY COUNCIL

Animal-activist Nathan Runkle received official recognition from the city of Los Angeles for his vegan activism and work to protect animals in the food industry. The LA city council presented Runkle—who founded animal-rights organization Mercy For Animals (MFA) when he was 15 years old—with a certificate that listed seven resolutions recognizing his work. "Through his work with MFA," one resolution states, "[Runkle] has been an outspoken advocate for vegan eating, featured in hundreds of newspaper, television, and radio interviews." Other resolutions highlight Runkle's work as an inspiring speaker, his involvement as co-founder of food-advocacy nonprofit The Good Food Institute, and his work with Circle V—an all-vegan festival Runkle co-founded with vegan musician Moby in 2016. Runkle recently debuted his autobiographical book entitled Mercy For Animals: One Man's Quest to Inspire Compassion and Improve the Lives of Farm Animals, which details his journey as an animal-activist, the hardships endured by undercover investigators working to protect animals through MFA, and the major victories of his organization. 11/08/2017 UN PUSHED TO MAKE COWS FOCUS OF CLIMATE TALKS

Major investment group Farm Animal Investment Risk & Return Initiative (FAIRR) urged the United Nations this week to create a roadmap to restructure global food systems—particularly animal-agriculture—in its upcoming discussions on climate change. The United Nations will meet in Bonn, Germany this week for the COP23 to discuss a framework to implement climate change-related policies featured in the Paris Agreement—a document that does not sufficiently address the impact of animal-agriculture on global greenhouse gas emissions. FAIRR founder Jeremy Coller urged the UN to discuss promoting new advances in the food industry that displace animal-protein as a food source in developed countries. Last year, FAIRR sent a letter to 16 major companies to demand they address how their companies will mitigate the growing climate crisis perpetuated by factory farming. Last month, Unilever chefs signed a manifesto that focuses on eight tenets—one of which is to use, serve, and promote more plant-based foods. (vegnews.com)

VegaBoo's menu includes vegan milkshakes, kombucha, entrées, and sweet treats. The purpose of the café is to attract good human guardians for their adoptable cats, and VegaBoo has already found forever homes for two of the six feline residents since opening last week. 11/06/2017 VEGAN SALES AT ITALIAN CHAIN UP BY 246 PERCENT

Italian chain Zizzi—with more than 140 locations across the United Kingdom and Ireland—announced this week a 246-percent increase in sales of its vegan menu items in 2017. The chain revealed an increase of 104 percent in the sales of its vegan pizzas, with 166,451 vegan meals sold during the summer. In 2016, Zizzi added nine vegan dishes to its menus. By the end of its 2016 fiscal year, the chain reported that sales of vegan options had increased by 150 percent—with many non-vegans sampling the new plant-based offerings. Due to the popularity of vegan dishes, Zizzi has added several more options since last year, including three desserts—the sales of which the chain reported have increased by tenfold in one year. To continue the momentum, Zizzi added two new vegan pizzas—the Zucca Rustica and Classic Pepperonata—to its menu for fall. (vegnews.com)

11/03/2017 DAIRY MANURE KILLS 60,000 FISH IN IOWA

Iowa-based dairy farm New Vienna was implicated this week in causing the deaths of 60,000 in two local creeks. The fish—comprised of several different species, including creek chubs, white suckers, stonerollers, and minnows—were found dead last month sparking an investigation by the Department of Natural Resources that traced the origin of the pollution five miles upstream to New Vienna—which is considered a small operation and holds approximately 300 cows. DNR senior environmental specialist Brian Jergenson said that penalties will likely be imposed against New Vienna. Earlier this year, another Iowa farm named Meadowvale Dairy was ordered to pay $160,000 in fines after violating the Clean Water Act on 12 occasions by allowing waste from 10,000 cows to enter tributaries of the Big Sioux River. 11/02/2017 INDIA BANS ALL WILD-ANIMAL CIRCUSES

Animal circuses are closer to becoming a thing of the past with India being the latest country to ban the practice. The new ruling stipulates that animals can no longer be used to entertain and will come into force this week. The ban comes after a series of investigations carried out by government agency Central Zoo Authority (CZA) that exposed the rampant cruelty in the industry. "The probe showed that animals were being maintained in circuses in cruel conditions and were tortured to extract performances," CZA member DN Singh told local media outlet India Today. "Some of the owners of circuses even submitted morphed photographs to us in a bid to claim that animals were kept well." Circus animals are often beaten, tortured and abused so that they will be fearful of their trainers and adopt the unnatural poses and movements set out for them. (veggieathletic.com)
