The BBC has launched a new series called Generation Activism, and the first episode focuses on animal rights. 10/30/2018 IS DUCKWEED THE NEXT VEGAN EGG?

California-based startup Plantible Foods believes aquatic plant "lemna"—also known as duckweed—is the next big plant-based protein. The flowering green plant, which can be found floating on the surface of still or slow-moving bodies of water, contains more complete protein and is more digestible than other plant-based proteins such as pea or rice, according to Plantible co-founder Maurits van de Ven. After the plant has gone through the company's cold-press extraction process, the remaining white protein looks and behaves like an egg white, has a neutral taste, and is free from major allergens. Van de Ven also claims that duckweed is one of the fastest growing green leaf plants in the world and can be harvested daily, which allows the company to produce higher yields than traditional plant crops. Over the next two years, Plantible plans to scale and optimize its production and work with food scientists to develop ways to incorporate lemna into new food formulations. (vegnews.com)

10/29/2018 VEGAN PRINCE INVESTS IN PLANT-BASED BURGER COMPANY

London-based vegan eatery The Vurger Co. will expand across London thanks to a recent investment by Saudi Arabia's vegan Prince Khaled Alwaleed bin Talal. "Excited to let you know first," Prince Khaled told VegNews, "[that I] just finalized an investment in The Vurger Co. in London. Plans are to expand in London and bring them to the Middle East after." The company was founded in 2016 by entrepreneurs Rachel Hugh and Neil Potts after the duo was inspired by California's plant-based cuisine. In 2017, The Vurger Co. raised £300,000 ($389,000) in less than 77 hours after launching its crowdfunding campaign on CrowdCube. Earlier this week, Prince Khaled announced a partnership with San Diego-based vegan chain Plant Power Fast Food that will result in at least one location of the eatery in the Middle East. Prince Khaled's investments in The Vurger Co. and Plant Power Fast Food are part of his goal to open 10 vegan restaurants in the Middle East by 2020.

10/26/2018 BILL GATES AGAINST ANIMAL AGRICULTURE

Microsoft founder Bill Gates recently published a post to his blog Gates Notes that highlights the environmentally damaging effects of animal agriculture. The billionaire also shared an impactful image that compares the carbon dioxide emissions of the most polluting countries, with China in the lead at 10.2 gigatons annually, followed by the United States at 5.3 gigatons annually, and "Republic of Cattle" (a combination of the beef and dairy industries) in third at 5.0 gigatons annually. "If all the cattle in the world joined together to start their own country," Gates captioned the image, "they would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases." As part of his efforts to fight climate change, Gates has invested in several companies that are poised to displace animal agriculture, including vegan brand Beyond Meat and clean-meat company Memphis Meats. 10/24/2018 COMMERCIAL FISHING BANNED IN THE ARCTIC FOR 16 YEARS

An international agreement signed in Greenland this month is putting a 16-year ban on commercial fishing across an expanse of the Arctic Ocean that is about the size of the Mediterranean Sea. The ban aims to protect an area of the ocean—and its fragile ecosystem—that is melting due to rising temperatures, creating potential for fishing exploration in an area that was previously covered in ice. Although no fishing had taken place in the area, large ships were reportedly beginning to explore fishing opportunities. The countries that signed the agreement include the US, Canada, Russia, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Japan, South Korea, China, and the European Union, which also pledged to begin a joint program for scientific monitoring of the area. 10/22/2018 CLERGY MEMBERS ACROSS BROOKLYN TAKE ON PLANT-BASED CHALLENGE

Last week, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams launched the Clergy Healthy Lifestyle Challenge, a 12-week program to educate faith leaders about the wellness benefits of a plant-based diet. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with The Brooklyn Hospital group of Brooklyn clergy, and 13 clergy members across various faiths have committed to participating. "Our faith leaders are in a unique position to support [our] mind, body, and soul," Adams said. "By modeling healthy behaviors and guiding their congregations in wellness and spirit, they have the opportunity to restore hope for those struggling with their health." In 2016, Adams transitioned to veganism after nearly losing his vision and incurring nerve damage due to type 2 diabetes—symptoms he says disappeared after three months of consuming a whole foods, plant-based diet. Adams has been a vocal advocate for the vegan lifestyle during his term. (vegnews.com)

10/17/2018 AMAZON UK REPORTS 100 PERCENT SPIKE IN SALES OF VEGAN BAKING PRODUCTS

Online marketplace Amazon UK released new research highlighting the growth of vegan baking products. Amazon UK contracted research firm Ginger Comms to analyze buying habits in the United Kingdom in the last 12 months based on a poll of 1,565 consumers. The report found that sales of vegan baking products increased by 100 percent and that 41 percent of respondents have tried a vegan cake—with 62 percent sampling vegan cake for the first time in the last year. While some have criticized the validity of vegan baking as highlighted this week during The Great British Bake Off, Amazon UK's statistics prove that a large portion of residents are interested in vegan baking, with 37 percent of respondents stating they are more likely to choose a vegan cake as opposed to its traditional, animal-based counterpart. To celebrate The Great British Bake Off's historic vegan week, Amazon UK launched an online vegan shop. (vegnews.com)

10/15/2018 MANCHESTER STUDENT NOW HAS VEGAN MEALS UNDER THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT

A Manchester mother has successfully used the Human Rights Act to ensure free vegan lunches are being served at her daughter’s school. Laura Chepner launched a campaign to include vegan school lunch options after Lois, her five-year-old daughter, started attending Ramsbottom’s Hazelhurst Primary in September. She was first told that because her daughter’s dietary requirements were a “lifestyle choice,” unrelated to religion or allergy, the child was not eligible for free school meals – something every child in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 in England and Wales are entitled to under the universal free school meal system. With the information that veganism is a protected belief under the 2010 Human Rights Act, Chepner gained the support of the school’s headteacher, chef, and Bury Council, who together created a vegan-friendly menu, which includes pizza with vegan cheese and fishless fingers. 10/09/2018 MINNEAPOLIS MAYOR HOSTS INAUGURAL PLANT-BASED SERIES ON CLIMATE-FRIENDLY FOODS

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Michelle Courtright, owner of local plant-based eatery Fig + Farro, recently hosted the first in a series of monthly climate change events that bring together experts, policy stakeholders, and community members to discuss how food choices affect the environment. The Climate Series Salon and Supper Club program brings action to Mayor Frey's Plant-Based Proclamation, a document he issued in July urging citizens to consider eating climate-friendly foods such as plants. The series will continue on the first Monday of each month—coinciding with Meatless Monday—and will be hosted by other environmental influencers who will strategize ways in which Minneapolis and the rest of the state can become leaders in the climate-change movement. 10/05/2018 8-MILLION-SIGNATURE PETITION ON WORLD ANIMAL DAY

Yesterday, on World Animal Day, a petition with more than 8 million signatures were delivered to the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City urging a worldwide ban against cosmetic animal testing. The petition—one of the largest of its kind in history—supports a call by beauty brand The Body Shop and non-profit organization Cruelty Free International for the UN to formalize an international convention banning animal testing on beauty products globally. Cruelty Free International estimates that more than 500,000 animals each year are used in cosmetic testing, and says the ban serves to advance the agenda of the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption. The EU banned all cosmetic animal testing in 2013, California recently passed legislation to prohibit the sale of beauty products tested on animals after January 1, 2020, and Canada is expected to soon follow. 10/02/2018 WORLD DAY FOR FARMED ANIMALS

Each year, an estimated 70 billion cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and other sentient land-based animals are caged, crowded, deprived, drugged, mutilated and macerated in the world's factory farms. Then they are brutally slaughtered for our dinner table. Countless aquatic animals are caught and suffocated by vast trawler nets, so we can have our fish fillet or tuna fish salad. Since 1983, the annual observance of World Day for Farmed Animals on October 2nd has been offering people of conscience a superb opportunity to memorialize and mourn these innocent lives. An opportunity to ask their friends and neighbors to stop subsiding senseless atrocities at their supermarket checkout counter. Hundreds of groups and individuals throughout the world participate each year. Check out Farm Animal Rigths movement - FARM's website to see how you can participate too.

10/01/2018 REPLACING ONE BEEF PATTY WITH A BEYOND BURGER FOR ONE YEAR IS EQUIVALENT TO 12 MILLION FEWER CARS

Beyond Meat released a life-cycle analysis report that compares the environmental impact of the vegan Beyond Burger to its beef-based counterpart. Researchers used a 2017 assessment report compiled by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association as a baseline, and compared that to the life-cycle of the Beyond Burger. The research showed that the vegan patty generates 90 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions, requires 46 percent less energy, has more than 99 percent less impact on water scarcity, and 93 percent less impact on land use than a ¼ pound patty of beef. To illustrate their key findings, researchers revealed that if Americans—who consume an average of three burgers per week—replaced one beef patty with a Beyond Burger for one year, the shift would be equivalent to removing 12 million cars from the road, or saving enough energy to power 2.3 million homes (vegnews.com)
