Colorado Governor Jared Polis urged the Department of Agriculture (DOA) to move toward producing crops to support the growing plant-based meat industry during a recent gathering at a new DOA research facility in Broomfield, CO. In between bites of Burger King's new plant-based Impossible Whopper, the governor explained that meatless meat is poised to be a leading industry in the future, akin to marijuana, hemp, and blockchain technology. The governor urged the Department of Agriculture to consider that the plant-based patty is made with crops that could potentially be grown in Colorado, stating, "Everything that's in this was grown on a farm." During the discussion, Polis—whose partner, first gentleman of Colorado Marlon Reis, is vegan—promised to buy 100 Impossible Whoppers for the employees of the newly opened facility to encourage the state to capitalize on the booming plant-based meat industry. Swedish vegan climate activist Greta Thunberg will be honored with the Game Changer Award at this year's GQ Men of the Year Awards—which honors men and women who shape the world's cultural landscapes—on September 3. In addition to the award, Thunberg will appear on the front cover of GQ's October issue. "The Game Changer Award was created for Greta Thunberg," GQ Editor-in-Chief Dylan Jones said. "Her fearless dedication to raising awareness of the global climate change crisis makes her the absolute embodiment of this award and on behalf of GQ we couldn't be prouder to celebrate her at the upcoming GQ Men Of The Year Awards." Sixteen-year-old Thunberg is best known for spearheading a global movement that has encouraged people to take climate change seriously, including starting the Fridays for Future movement in which students strike from school to draw attention to the climate change issue. The teen activist and her family are vegan and have given up air travel due to the damaging environmental effects of consuming animals and burning fuel. Earlier this year, Thunberg was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and also landed a major book deal with publisher Penguin Books to spotlight her work. (vegnews.com)
Meat brand Smithfield Foods—the world's largest producer of pork—will launch a plant-based meat line under its Pure Farmland brand in stores starting mid-September. The soy-based product line includes breakfast patties (in original and maple flavors); burger patties (one that is "Simply Seasoned" and another stuffed with dairy-free cheddar alternative); and meatballs (in "Homestyle" and Italian flavors, the latter made with dairy-free Parmesan alternative). The line also features two flavors of "starters" (Simply Seasoned and Mild Italian), plant-based meat crumbles which can be added to recipes for a boost of plant-based protein. Smithfield Foods' competitors Tyson Foods and Perdue have both developed lines to target so-called "flexitarians." However, unlike Smithfield Foods, the meat brands formulated their new lines with animal products such as eggs and beef, effectively cutting out a segment of consumers looking for fully plant-based options. Smithfield Foods' plant-based meat line will be packed in trays that are made from more than 50-percent recycled materials and available in the refrigerated section of grocery stores nationwide. The Mastatal Villas permaculture farm and eco-retreat in Costa Rica will no longer slaughter animals after hearing a speech by James Aspey, an Australian animal activist. Aspey shared on Instagram that he gave a speech about veganism at the farm in Costa Rica, and that “the owners have subsequently decided to go vegan which means the animals on their farm will never again be slaughtered.” Aspey says that “the husband listened to my talk, which was translated for him into Spanish, and he shared everything he learned with his wife. She wrote a three-page letter to us saying how much her perspective had shifted and that she had always loved animals and hated the slaughter process ever since she was a child. She didn’t realize there was a way to live without killing. Now she does.” Several years ago, Aspey took a 365-day vow of silence to raise awareness about animal suffering and now tours the world speaking about veganism. (vegnews.com)
This week, Brazil-based Marfrig Global Foods SA—the world's largest producer of animal-based hamburgers—announced its partnership with grain and oil company Archer Daniels Midland Co (ADM), which will result in the launch of a vegan burger throughout Brazil. While ADM will provide the raw materials, the meat company will be responsible for producing, marketing, distributing, and selling the forthcoming plant-based burger to restaurant and retail partners. "Together, Marfrig and ADM will produce a 100-percent vegetable burger with a meat-like flavor and texture. We want to give consumers the power of choice. It's up to them," Marfrig CEO Eduardo Miron said. "The vegetable burger comes to complement Marfrig's product portfolio and serve all market channels in which we operate." In May, Marfrig's competitor JBS SA—the largest meat company in the world—unveiled a vegan burger it aims to launch under its Seara brand during the APAS trade show. (vegnews.com)
Sales of plant-based food grew five times faster than total food sales in the United States in the last year, according to data recently released by advocacy group Good Food Institute (GFI) and trade group Plant Based Food Association (PBFA). Compiled by analytics firm SPINS over a 52-week period ending on April 29, 2019, the data shows that while the retail food market in the United States grew by two percent, sales in the plant-based food sector—which is now worth $4.5 billion—have grown by 11 percent. This data is supported by financial reports released by individual vegan companies, including Beyond Meat which reported a net revenue of $67.3 million last week, attributing it to an increase in sales volumes—representing an increase of 287 percent from this time last year. "This is just the beginning of a massive growth period for plant-based foods," GFI Director of Corporate Engagement Caroline Bushnell said. "Consumer appetite for plant-based foods is surging as consumers increasingly make the switch to foods that match their changing values and desire for more sustainable options." (vegnews.com)
This week, Ukranian foie gras producer MHP announced it would cease operations and sell its foie gras farm. MHP's move comes after an undercover investigation was released in April by animal-rights group Open Cages which documented horrific abuse at a foie gras producer in Ukraine—presumably MHP as it is the only such business in the country that keeps 20,000 birds on its farm. The investigation uncovered birds being violently thrown from trucks into cages, injured in various ways, and force-fed with a metal pole that workers lubricated with engine oil. The investigator witnessed approximately 20 birds per day dying due to stress and injuries from these abuses. (vegnews.com)
