03/29/2011 UNBELIEVABLE SEALING QUOTA ANNOUNCED
On Friday, March 25, the Canadian Fisheries Minister, Gail Shea, announced an incredible killing quota for seals for 2011: 468,200 defenseless seal pups. Of these, 400,000 harp seal pups can be massacred by Canadian fishermen this year. Of the rest of the quota, most are grey seals. This is the largest quota in history. This quota announcement is clearly designed as a slap in the face of anti-seal hunt activists. Although Minister Shea is authorizing the killing of over 468,000 seal pups, the fact is, there is no market for all these seal pelts. The Canadian government has been pouring taxpayer dollars into subsidizing the seal hunt through grants to sealers to develop "value-added" seal products, through ministerial trips to China to push seal meat on this large market, through all the underhanded ways in which it targets anti-seal hunt activists. Nevertheless, the market for seal products has dwindled over the past several years as a result of all the hard work of seal activists and anti-seal hunt organizations around the world.
03/28/2011 NAVY TRAINING LINKED TO AT LEAST THREE DOLPHIN DEATHS
A Naval training exercise that included an underwater blast off San Diego's coast has been linked to at least three dolphin deaths earlier this month, prompting a probe into whether the military violated the federal law that protects marine mammals. Navy officials, who reported the deaths of the long-beaked common dolphins following the March 4 detonation off the coast, say they were following proper procedures and will continue with the training.
03/24/2011 BABY DOLPHIN SAVED AFTER DUMPED IN RICE FIELD BY TSUNAMI
A baby dolphin has been rescued in Japan after being dumped in a rice field by a giant tsunami that hit the coast on March 11. The dolphin was spotted in the flooded field, about a mile from the coast, said Ryo Taira who has been rescuing animals abandoned after the 9.0 magnitude quake and tsunami left 23,000 people dead or missing. Taira found the dolphin struggling in the shallow seawater on Tuesday and after failing to net her, waded in to the field, which had yet to be sown with rice, to cradle the four foot animal in his arms. Taira and some friends wrapped the dolphin in wet towels and drove her back to the sea, where they set her free. The dolphin appeared to perk up when she was back in the Pacific, he said.
03/23/2011 VEGETARIAN THROWS AIRLINE MEAL AT FLIGHT ATTENDANT
A vegetarian passenger aboard a Continental Airlines flight apparently was so disgusted by the meal she was served that she threw her tray at a flight attendant, the New York Post reports. "She said she was a vegetarian and she didn't like what she was being served," an airline official told the newspaper. "So she threw the food tray - and the food - at the attendant." The flight last Friday, which originated in the Dominican Republic, was bound for Newark Liberty International Airport. The woman reportedly had ordered a special meal but it was not vegetarian, the newspaper reported. Port Authority officers met the plane at the gate when it landed in Newark at 3:58 P.M., but the flight attendant declined to press charges.
03/21/2011 DUCK HUNT PROTESTER SHOT IN THE FACE
The future of duck hunting is the subject of bitter debate after a protester was shot in the face by a teenage hunter. Witnesses claim they saw the 14-year-old boy taunting the victim, St Kilda woman Julia Symons, minutes before she was peppered with shotgun pellets at Lake Buloke in the state's northwest. But police described the shooting as an accident after taking the teenage hunter and his uncle to nearby Donald police station for questioning and seizing the firearm involved.

03/17/2011 PAUL MCCARTNEY SUPPORTS BAN OF ANIMAL TESTED COSMETICS SOLD IN THE EU
Paul McCartney has voiced his support for a campaign to end the sale of cosmetics in the European Union that have been tested on animals. The EU has already banned cosmetic testing on animals. And the ban to sale such cosmetics was originally scheduled to take place in 2013, but some officials want the ban delayed. McCartney and other celebrities are using the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection’s (BUAV) campaign in hopes of convincing officials to adhere to the timeline.
03/16/2011 HUGE LOBSTER SAVED FROM THE POT
One of the biggest and oldest lobsters ever caught in Britain has been saved from the pot and will live out the rest of its long life in an aquarium. The massive crustacean measures close to one meter (3 feet) in length and weighs more than 4 kg (9 lb). "He's a fantastic specimen and by his size alone he has got to be at least 50 years old," said Lindsay Holloway of the Blue Reef aquarium in Portsmouth, southern England where the lobster now lives. "He is an amazing creature and it's quite an achievement to have reached such an impressive age," he added. The lobster was caught in around 14 feet of water by a compassionate angler fishing for sole in Bracklesham Bay, off the coast of West Sussex.
03/15/2011 VEGETARIAN COUPLE BARRED FROM ADOPTING
A vegetarian couple on the Greek island of Crete has been barred from adopting a child because of doubts about their diet, a local social welfare official said. The decision was taken because the would-be adoptive parents, who have gone to court to overturn it, eat no meat or fish and officials feared this regimen would be applied to the child as well. The case is to be examined on March 16.
03/14/2011 CHICKENS ARE CAPABLE OF FEELING EMPATHY
Domestic chickens display signs of empathy, the ability to "feel another's pain" that is at the heart of compassion, a study has found. The discovery has important implications for the welfare of farm and laboratory animals, say researchers. Empathy, long thought to be a defining human trait, causes one individual to be affected by the emotional state of another. Feelings are "mirrored" in the observer, leading to a shared experience of being happy, sad or distressed. The research demonstrated that hens possess a fundamental capacity to empathise, at least with their own chicks. Scientists chose hens and chicks for the study because it is thought empathy probably evolved to aid parental care.
03/09/2011 BULGARIA TO END DOG SPINNING RITUAL
Bulgaria's prime minister overnight condemned a rare custom known as "dog spinning" which is meant to ward off evil spirits but is seen by some activists as animal abuse. "Prime Minister Boyko Borisov condemned the barbaric dog ritual of 'trichane' in the region of Strandja," the government said. "He discussed ways to end such animal abuse today with the prosecutor general Boris Velchev and called for sanctions," it said. As part of the ritual, a rope is coiled around a dog's chest and twisted so that the animal is suspended in the air. As the rope unwinds, the dog spins out of control before dropping into a river.

Researchers in the UK are developing an observation system for farm animals using small cameras connected to computers. The cameras will be placed inside areas where animals are housed in order to observe their behaviors for signs of poor health. Data from the cameras will be sent to computers for storage and analysis.
