04/29/2011 INTERNATIONAL RESPECT FOR CHICKENS DAY
International Respect for Chickens Day, May 4, is an annual project launched by United Poultry Concerns in 2005 to celebrate chickens throughout the world and protest the bleakness of their lives in farming operations. The entire month of May is International Respect for Chickens Month.
04/27/2011 THE NORWEGIAN LABOUR PARTY PLEDGES TO BAN FUR FARMING IN NORWAY
The Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance (NAPA - www.dyrevern.no) has been campaigning for years to end fur farming in Norway. One of NAPA's main aims has been to increase political support for a ban on fur farming. Norway's largest political party, the Norwegian Labour Party, has been in NAPA's focus for some time. During this year's Party Congress, the supreme body of the Norwegian Labour Party voted on whether fur farming in Norway should be phased out or not. There were 170 votes in favour of a ban and 125 votes against a ban.
04/26/2011 ALLEY CAT RESCUE HOSTS FREE FERAL CAT SPAY DAY
On April 27, 2011, Alley Cat Rescue (ACR) will be hosting its second annual Free Feral Cat Spay Day to encourage the veterinary community and the public to end cat homelessness and to decrease shelters' euthanasia rates by practicing trap-neuter-return (TNR). TNR is the humane management of feral cat colonies or community cats, where cats are caught in humane traps, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped and returned to the site. Friendly kittens and cats who can be socialized are placed into adoption programs to find homes, while those who are truly "feral" are returned to their outdoor homes. Last year, over 150 veterinary clinics from 17 states joined ACR in the fight to prevent cat homelessness. Together, over 200 community cats were spayed or neutered. So far this year, over 280 veterinary clinics have registered to participate.
04/22/2011 RHINO POACHERS SHOT DEAD
Two poachers have been shot dead in the Kruger National Park, in Mpumalanga, SA National Parks said. Spokesman William Mabasa said rangers heard gunshots in the park on Monday April 18 night and went to investigate. They found the two chopping the horn from a dead rhino. "A shoot-out ensued and the two were shot dead," he said.
04/20/2011 SCOTLAND FOR ANIMALS DEMAND INVESTIGATION OVER HALAL SLAUGHTER
Scotland for Animals have made a formal request for a full investigation and if necessary prosecutions by the Food Standards Agency and Scottish FSA of the Halal Food Authority and all accredited slaughter firms. This move is in light of the HFA's endorsement and promotion of the "stun-to-immobilise" pre-slaughter stunning method which in the charity's view is potentially illegal under paragraph 8 of Schedule 4 of the Welfare of Animals at Slaughter and Killing regulations 1995. Scotland for Animals' Spokesman John Patrick said "The very few Muslim groups who claim to support the stunning of animals appear to be cynically covering themselves by promoting low current methods far below that recommended by DEFRA, etc. to render animals insensible to pain and distress at the point of killing."
04/18/2011 LIVE ANIMALS SOLD AS KEY RINGS IN CHINA
Small fish, turtles and other amphibians are being sold in Beijing as mobile phone trinkets and key rings. Kept in bags filled with colored, oxygenated water the animals cost around $1.50 each. One vendor selling the animals outside of a Beijing subway station told CNN that the bag contained crystallized oxygen and nutrients. She said that that the animals could live for days but also warned that they should be freed from the bag as soon as the air ran out or they would suffocate. Among the animals being sold are young Chinese soft-shell turtles - the adult turtles are a popular dish in Chinese cooking. The live trinkets have been condemned by animal rights groups who have highlighted the lack of animal protection laws in China.

Bojan Jambrosic, winner of Croatian Pop Idol, has lent his support to the No Cruel Cosmetics campaign by taking the petition to the streets of Croatian capitol Zagreb. With Croatian ECEAE Member Animal Friends Croatia, Bojan informed Croatian shoppers about the potential delay to the EU's 2013 deadline, which could see thousands more animals being cruelly tested on around the world for cosmetics sold in Europe. Bojan said, "I am happy to join the signing of this petition and I invite everybody to do the same. Let us with our signatures together stop the suffering of these innocent creatures – and be above cruelty."

The April 7 is "World Good Health Day" and it will be marked in Moscow, at 2 P.M. in the "Capitol" TV Centre, when VITA celebrates the opening of the first vegan restaurant, the Moscow franchise of the international brand "Loving Hut." 04/06/2011 WILD ANIMALS WILL BE BANNED IN THE UK FROM CIRCUS
Wild animals will be banned from Britain's circuses under new Government plans, the Sunday Express can reveal. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman has been persuaded that forcing elephants, tigers, lions, camels and other exotic creatures to perform tricks for audiences is wrong in modern Britain. She is also said to believe that making them travel thousands of miles every year in cramped lorry trailers known as "beast -wagons" is harmful to their welfare. Officials at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are working on the final details to ensure there is no conflict with European legislation. An announcement is expected within weeks.
04/05/2011 TSUNAMI DOG FOUND ALIVE AT SEA
Three weeks after being swept out to sea by Japan's devastating tsunami, a dog was found alive on a floating island of debris. Crew on a Japan Coastguard helicopter circling the wreckage of a house floating on the ocean got a surprise when they saw the dog scramble out from beneath the rubble. The house had been washed away not far from the Kesennuma coast in northern Japan, following the magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that left more than 28,000 people dead or missing and damaged six nuclear reactors. As the helicopter moved in closer, the frightened dog retreated below the rubble, forcing rescuers to winch down. The dog was eventually rescued by a coast guard boat when the helicopter reportedly ran out of fuel.
04/04/2011 FOUNDER OF GO DADDY SHOOTS DOWN ELEPHANT IN ZIMBABWE
Go Daddy founder Bob Parsons found much criticism after posting a video online showing himself proudly killing an elephant in Zimbabwe. Parsons posted the vacation video to his Arizona company's website saying that it was the second consecutive year he has spent hunting "problem elephants." "Of everything I do, this is the most rewarding," Parsons said in the video's opening message. He justified his actions by saying it was eating a local farmer's crops. The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said it is shifting its peta.org website away from Go Daddy and closing its account with the company. "Parsons has killed at least one elephant and a leopard for his personal enjoyment," PETA said at its website.
