08/18/2010 MILITARY EXPERIMENTS ON LIVING ANIMALS PROHIBITED
The U.S. Army in Germany intended to injure pigs and goats at the military training area Grafenwoehr in Bavaria to train their medical staff. The German association Doctors Against Animal Experiments and other animal rights groups protested against these plans. The competent authority has now rejected the application of the U.S. Army because it violates the German Animal Welfare Act. As part of a trauma and casualty management training program the U.S. Army wanted to stab and cut anesthetized pigs and goats with a scalpel to mimic battlefield wounds. Trauma management can be taught with advanced simulation tools and in war areas where real casualties have to be helped.

A rural Ohio church rejected an offer from a leading animal rights group to erect a giant statue of Jesus proclaiming: "Go Vegan." People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) offered to replace the congregation's previous 62 foot statue for free after it was felled by lightening, KJRH-TV reported. But the new version would depict Jesus holding a lamb with a banner reading: "Blessed are the merciful. Go Vegan," according to a letter from PETA vice president Bruce Friedrich. "I think we all would agree that Jesus would be horrified by the cruelty that we inflict today on animals simply to satisfy our addiction to the taste of their flesh and milk," Friedrich wrote. Pastor Lawrence Bishop of Solid Rock Church in the town of Monroe, just east of Dayton, told the station that PETA's offer was simply "amusing," nothing more.

Evans argues that not only do primate irradiation experiments fall out of line with the Obama administration's long range objective of developing new technologies to shield space radiations, but it also risks current and future international relations and partnerships crucial to NASA's success.
