04/30/2010 CALIFORNIA COUNTY BANS TOYS WITH FAST-FOOD MEALS

Hoping again to be a pioneer in promoting healthier eating, Santa Clara County supervisors on Tuesday approved the nation's first ordinance that would prevent restaurants from using toys to lure kids to meals high in fat, sugar and calories. The law prohibits restaurants in unincorporated parts of the county from giving away goodies unless the meals meet certain nutritional guidelines. More and more in recent years, fast-food critics say restaurants have encouraged families to make unhealthy choices by offering Iron Man Cyclone Spinning Robot Drones and Barbie Mermaid dolls with their kids' meals. Though the crackdown will affect no more than a handful of restaurants, county supervisors hope their vote will create a ripple effect in cities, other counties and the state similar to how Santa Clara County helped to lead the way on forcing fast-food chains to post calorie counts on menus. They also hoped this latest push would prod the restaurant industry to take notice.

04/27/2010 THE SPANISH BULLFIGHTER GORED IN MEXICO

One of Spain's top matadors was seriously injured in Mexico when a 1,100-pound bull gored him in the groin and hoisted him into the air, causing major blood loss, his manager said. Jose Tomas lost up to 17 pints of blood after being gored Saturday by a bull named Navegante in the Mexican city of Aguascalientes. The bull's horn penetrated 4 inches into Tomas' groin and punctured a vein and an artery, manager Salvador Boix told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser from Aguascalientes. Bullring doctors operated on the 34-year-old Tomas immediately to stabilize him, and he underwent more surgery later at a hospital for more than three hours.

04/23/2010 COMMERCIAL WHALING MAY CONTINUE FOR 10 YEARS

Japan, Norway and Iceland could continue commercial whaling for another decade, despite a global ban, under a proposal released on Thursday by the International Whaling Commission. Between 4,000 and 18,000 whales could be saved over the next 10 years under the compromise proposal, which sets lower catch limits for all three whaling nations than the self-imposed quotas they have now. "For the first time since the adoption of the commercial whaling moratorium, we will have strict, enforceable limits on all whaling operations," Cristian Maquieira, the Chilean chairman of the commission, said in a statement.

04/20/2010 AIRLINE BANS THE TRANSPORT OF DOGS AND CATS DESTINED TO BE KILLED IN EXPERIMENTS

Less than 24 hours after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) released photos showing 50 terrified beagles being transported by Lufthansa airlines to a laboratory in Scotland, global transport company Lufthansa has announced a new policy prohibiting the transport of dogs and cats to laboratories. PETA's international affiliates took the campaign global by posting similar alerts on their respective sites. The dogs in the photos PETA released were being shipped to a Charles River Laboratories (CRL) testing facility in Scotland where they were likely poisoned and killed in drug and pesticide tests. CRL is one of the world's largest breeders and users of animals for experiments and has a long history of violating animal protection laws. The company has violated federal laws more than two dozen times since 2007 and was recently fined $14,000 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the negligent deaths of 33 monkeys at their Reno and Sparks, Nev., facilities.

04/17/2010 CHICKENS CRUELLY SPRAY-PAINTED AT CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY

Farm chickens ended up inside campus buildings at Carnegie Mellon University last weekend and somebody decided to paint them. Beth McMaster, a wildlife rehabilitator in Butler County who is caring for the birds, two of whom are sick, said it strikes her as a case of animal cruelty. She said the school owes the public an accounting of what happened and should punish whoever is responsible. Ms. McMaster has nine hens that were removed from the campus beginning on Saturday, a number of them streaked with what she described as an oil-based spray paint. One of the birds "is painted pink on her chest. There's one with purple on her back," she said. "There's another with yellow on her. One little hen has it on her back and face." It appeared they had not eaten in nearly a week and two have a respiratory problem, she said. It's not possible to safely remove the paint, she added, so it will stay until the birds molt their feathers and "hopefully none of it will flake off into their mouth." It's toxic to them," she said.

04/14/2010 VICTORIA TO BAN SEAL PRODUCTS

Victoria could be the first Canadian city to publicly decry the seal slaughter on the East Coast. Dave Shishkoff of the international animal advocacy organization Friends of Animals is calling on Victoria City Council to ban the sale of seal products within the city limits. "A new approach is needed; clearly the top-down effort over the last four decades hasn't had an impact on getting Newfoundland or Ottawa to stop the slaughter on East Coast ice," says Shishkoff. "Perhaps if individual Canadian cities, and eventually whole provinces, ban seal products, Ottawa will finally get the message that the Canadian public wants to see an end to this bloodbath. Let’s begin with Victoria, a city traditionally active against the seal kill."

Dressed in garish shorts and boxing gloves, orangutans trade punches and spin-kick each other in a boxing ring. Horrifying footage shows cheering tourists drawn to the barbaric sport at a theme park called Safari World on the outskirts of Bangkok in Thailand. The same company was banned from doing exactly the same thing just six years ago.

04/12/2010 ELEPHANT KILLS TRAINER AT PENNSYLVANIA CIRCUS

Tragedy struck at a Pennsylvania circus Friday after a startled elephant stomped its trainer to death, police said. People at the Irem Shrine in Wilkes-Barre, which has been hosting the James Hamid Circus all week, rushed to help but not before the trainer sustained life-threatening injuries, said police Lt. Steven Oshefski. It was unclear what spooked the elephant, but the pachyderm was calmed by those on the scene. The victim is not being identified until next-of-kin have been notified, Oshefski said. Oshefski said the elephant came into contact with electrical wires, but it was unclear what exactly startled the animal. Animal rights activists decried the use of animals in circuses.

04/05/2010 ANTIWHALING ACTIVIST INDICTED ON 5 CRIMINAL CHARGES

Prosecutors on Friday indicted an antiwhaling activist from New Zealand on five criminal charges in connection with his intrusion onto a ship of Japan's whaling fleet in the Antarctic Ocean. The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office took the step against Peter Bethune, 44, former captain of the antiwhaling vessel Ady Gil of the U.S.-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The New Zealand national is suspected of throwing a bottle of a chemical substance onto the Shonan Maru No. 2 and injuring a crew member and illegally boarding the security escort ship of the Japanese whaling fleet while carrying a knife.
