07/31/2015 7-ELEVEN'S SURPRISING VEGAN SWITCH

7-Eleven didn't make a big deal about it, but Hampton Creek, the makers of Just Mayo announced via Twitter that the convenience store chain is switching to the mayo substitute for the foods it makes. Just Mayo is an eggless mayonnaise made from pea protein. Ecorazzi interviewed Hampton Creek CEO Josh Tetrick about the switch, which should be in effect at all 7-Eleven stores by now. The estimated environmental and health benefits of the switch are impressive. By switching from mayonnaise made with eggs to the plant-based Just Mayo, Tetrick estimates "each year will save over 81 million gallons of water, preserve over 4 million square feet of land, and prevent 191 million grams of CO2 emission. For the body, 1.5 billion milligrams of sodium, 304 million milligram of cholesterol, and 30 million grams of saturated fat would be avoided annually."

07/30/2015 ANIMAL TESTING FOR COSMETICS BANNED IN TURKEY

Animal rights activists in Turkey can now heave a sigh of relief. The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Administration of Turkey added a new article to its new regulation regarding the cosmetics industry and banned any animal testing for cosmetic products that have already been introduced to the market. Moreover, the Health Ministry made Turkish tags obligatory for any cosmetic product sold in the country. According to the new regulation, companies have to list the ingredients of their products in detail and have to inform their customers with Turkish tags even if they keep their original logo and tag on the product.

07/29/2015 IN THE LAND OF MILK AND HONEY, ISRAELIS TURN VEGAN

Nana Shrier, owner of the stylish Georgian restaurant Nanuchka in downtown Tel Aviv, shocked Israel's culinary world when she removed all animal-based products from the menu. A year later business is thriving, defying those who predicted its demise. Nanuchka is part of a growing trend that has transformed Israel's financial center into a haven for meatless cuisine. Some 400 food establishments are certified "vegan friendly", including Domino's Pizza, the first in the global chain to sell vegan pizza topped with non-dairy cheese. Veganism has gained popularity along with the surge in nutrition awareness worldwide. But the rapid growth in Israel, which goes beyond initiatives like "Meatless Mondays", could signal more is in store elsewhere.

07/28/2015 SPANISH TOWN GIVES COMPANION ANIMALS EQUAL RIGHTS AS CITIZENS

Trigueros del Valle, with a population of just 300, has become the first municipality in Spain to enshrine the rights of companion animals alongside those of human townsfolk. Pedro J Pérez Espinosa, the socialist mayor of the town in the Castilla y León province of Valladolid, introduced the so-called Renedo Declaration to guarantee the rights of dogs and cats as citizens of the town. "Dogs and cats have been living among us for over a thousand years," said the mayor after the measure was voted in during a plenary session on Monday.  "And the mayor must represent not just the human residents but must also be here for the others."  The animal bill of rights was approved unanimously by the new town council. It comprises 13 articles including statements such as "all residents are born equal and have the same right to existence" and "a resident, whether human or non-human, is entitled to respect".

07/27/2015 NEARLY 225,000 ANIMALS USED FOR SCIENTIFIC TESTS IN 2014 IN IRELAND

Almost 225,000 animals were used in scientific procedures in Ireland last year, according to new figures. An annual report from the Health Product Regulatory Authority (HPRA) showed that mice accounted for the vast majority of animals used, followed by rats. Other animals used for tests last year included rabbits, horses, cows, ferrets and zebrafish. Cats and dogs were used more than 1,200 times for scientific experiments in 2014. However, the report notes that these species were only exposed to veterinary-related procedures as opposed to tests on products intended for human use. John Carmody, spokesman for the Animal Rights Action Network, said it was "disgusted and sickened" by the latest figures concerning the use of animals in experiments.

07/24/2015 COWS HELP STRANDED BABY SEAL TO SAFETY

In the most recent showcase of animals showing compassion for one another, a herd of cows has helped save a stranded baby seal in England. The five day old seal ended up in the middle of a field dehydrated and underfed when a group of 30 cows spotted her and converged around her. Ian Ellis, the 67 year old man was walking by the area to watch the birds when he saw the unlikely combination of animals. According to Ellis, the cows were nudging the baby seal with their noses but not hurting it. He called the Natureland Seal Sanctuary that asked him to pick the seal up and bring it to the sanctuary. When she reaches 60 pounds, she will be released back into the wild.

07/23/2015 SECOND SLAUGHTERHOUSE SHUTTERED OVER ANIMAL CRUELTY

The Agriculture Ministry on July 6 ordered the closure of a slaughterhouse owned by the Soglowek company after a Channel 10 report, in cooperation with animal rights activists, revealed disturbing footage of animal abuse at the plant. Activists from the Anonymous for Animal Rights organization captured hidden camera footage of the daily treatment of chickens at the factory in Shlomi, northern Israel. Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel said following the report that work at the plant would be halted immediately and that he would show "zero tolerance” for animal abuse. Soglowek apologized for the workers' behavior. It said the workers in question had been fired and a complaint against them had been filed with police.

07/22/2015 NEW VIDEO GAME AIMS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF PINK DOLPHINS' PLIGHT IN LATAM

A video game developed in Costa Rica aims to raise awareness in Latin America of the need to protect the Amazon river dolphin, or pink dolphin, and other river species, such as the manatee, that are threatened by illegal fishing and habitat loss. The game, titled "Apu, el espiritu del rio" (Apu, the Spirit of the River), takes players on a journey through the river in the form of a pink dolphin that must dodge fishhooks, nets and boats, the Costa Rica office of World Animal Protection said. Pink river dolphins are used as bait in Brazil to catch a catfish known as the mota that is popular in Colombia, the animal rights organization said. The pink dolphin population has fallen by 10 percent as a result of illegal fishing in Brazil, World Animal Protection said. The video game can be found at apuyelespiritudelrio.org.

07/21/2015 QUEBEC BILL CHANGES ANIMALS FROM "PROPERTY" TO SENTIENT BEING AND INCLUDES JAIL TIME FOR CRUELTY

Animals will be considered "sentient beings" instead of property in a bill tabled in the Canadian province of Quebec. The legislation states that "animals are not things. They are sentient beings and have biological needs." Agriculture Minister Pierre Paradis proposed the bill and wants to change Quebec's infamous image as a haven for puppy mills. The legislation specifies that animals have biological needs and includes fines of up to $250,000 for those who are cruel to animals, as well as jail time for repeat offenders. Paradis said the bill puts Quebec more in line with other Canadian provinces like Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba. The act will apply to all domesticated and farm animals and certain wild animals. Paradis said he wants to see animals "treated with dignity as much as possible" it doesn't matter what animal.

07/20/2015 400 MILLION ANIMAL LIVES WERE SAVED THIS PAST YEAR DUE TO AMERICANS EATING LESS MEAT

While research recommends and concludes that a whole foods plant-based diet is best for our health and environment, some argue whether Meatless Mondays is enough. Approximately 93 percent of people still eat meat, however, meat consumption has been on a steady decline in the Unites States since 2007. In 2007, the United States raised and killed about 9.5 billion animals for food.  As of 2014, the number has dropped by 400 million! "What that means is that compared to 2007, last year, almost half a billion fewer animals were subjected to the torment of factory farming and industrial slaughter plants–and that's despite the increase in the U.S. population," explains Paul Shapiro, Vice President, Farm Animal Protection for the Humane Society of the United States. "That's more animals than are experimented on, hunted, used in circuses, puppy mills, and end up in animal shelters each year in the U.S.—all combined."

07/17/2015 RED ALGAE IS THE NEW VEGAN BACON

Oregon State University scientists have invented, so they claim, vegan bacon. Some 15 years ago, Chris Langdon, who works at the University’s fish and wildlife department, began working on a new strain of red algae. What eventually was made was a new species of dulse, and when it is fried or smoke, it apparently tastes like real bacon. This strain of dulse grows faster than other species, and looks to be prime for use in plant-based cooking. Found along the coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, this new dulse contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it especially healthy. What’s more, once dried, it contains 16% protein, which certainly helps its appeal to vegans and vegetarians seeking meat-substitutes.

07/16/2015 AMERICAN ADULTS STILL NOT EATING ENOUGH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Despite the urging scientific studies and the U.S. government, despite the prevalence of farmer’s markets and local, organic products, most U.S. adults are still not consuming enough fruits and vegetables. A survey revealed that only 13% of adults eat the recommended amount of fruit each day, while only 9% obtain the necessary daily vegetables. The thresholds aren’t particularly high either it would seem: one and a half to two cups of fruit are recommended by the government each day, while the vegetable cutoff is set at two to three cups. Eating more fruits and vegetables adds nutrients to diets, reduces the risk for heart disease, stroke, and some cancers, and helps manage body weight when consumed in place of more energy-dense foods begins the report.

07/15/2015 HARRY STYLES TELLS FANS: 'DON'T GO TO SEAWORLD!'

If anyone has the power to shut down SeaWorld for good, it just might be One Direction’s Harry Styles. The carelessly coiffed singer asked fans at the 1D concert in San Diego last week,''Does anybody here like dolphins?'' Then he wisely proclaimed, ''Don’t go to SeaWorld!'' After seeing both 'Blackfish' and 'The Cove' in 2012, Styles was inspired to team up with Ric and Lincoln O'Barry of the Dolphin Project on several occasions to raise awareness about dolphins in captivity, and has tweeted out his support for the organization numerous times since then.

07/14/2015 SAO PAOLO BANS IMPORT AND SALES OF FUR

Mayor Fernando Haddad has signed a historic law that bans the import and sales of fur products in Brazilian biggest city Sao Paolo. The legislation, proposed by councillor Laércio Benko and approved unanimously by the City Council in May, is meant to ban animal products of extreme cruelty. In November last year, the city of Sao Paolo signed a law to ban fur farming. Animals bred for the fashion industry are highly stressed, mistreated and ''kept in cages that are so small they cannot even move properly. The cruelty of fur farming makes fashion that contains animal fur immoral and unjustifiable'' the law states. The law aimed to protect animals whose fur is used for coats and other fashion accessories, including rabbits, foxes, mink, badgers, seals, coyotes, squirrels and chinchillas.

07/13/2015 MALAYSIA PASSES NEW, STRICTER ANIMAL WELFARE ACT

The Malaysian government has passed into a law a new animal welfare act that imposes harsher penalties for those torturing or neglecting an animal. ''There were so many cases reported in the media, especially social media on animal cruelty. I think for the future, awareness will increase and with the heavier penalties, the offenses will be reduced,'' said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob. The new act imposes a minimum fine of RM20,000 (more than US$5,200) to offenders plus possible jail time. The hefty price is 100 times higher than the one outlined in the Animal Act 1953 currently in place. To fix problems of animal abuse the government is looking into introducing further measures such as making animal welfare one of the subjects taught in schools.

07/09/2015 ANIMAL FRIENDS IN FRONT OF THE MINISTRY OF THE AGRICULTURE

After the proposal for introducing the bow and arrow hunting, Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, led by Minister Jakovina, brings up yet another proposal which should have stayed in the Stone Age! Because of the letter of the Minister of Agriculture which clearly states the posibility of changing Animal Protection Act in order to permit the breeding of chinchillas for fur, Animal Friends held a public protest in front of the Ministry holding a ten meters long transparent with a message for Minister Jakovina. With this protest, AFC wanted to let the Ministry know that Croatian public will not support the legalisation of killing chinchillas for profit.

07/08/2015 AWESOME COUPLE CREATING 3D PRINTED RATS FOR LAB DISSECTION

The National Anti-Vivisection Society reports that an estimated 6 to 12 million animals are dissected in the United States each year. Studies have shown that students who use humane alternatives to dissection score as well or better on performance tests than students who participate in dissection. Bart Taylor was working as a necropsy technician for a medical research institute when he bought a 3D printer. But like many people when presented with a novel new gadget, he wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. When he asked his wildlife biologist wife, Tara Whittle, she offered up the idea of a true-to-life animal model. And thus their company, NecropSynth, was born. The startup is dedicated to creating 3D-designed and printed, accurate anatomical models for scientific and education purposes. They plan to make all the schematics available for free. One of their goal is to increase ethicality of scientific education by reducing the number of animals sacrificed by providing an equivalent alternative.

07/07/2015 WORLD'S LARGEST PASTA COMPANY ENDS ALL ANIMAL TESTS

Following discussions with PETA, Barilla—the world's largest pasta company—has issued a comprehensive new policy banning tests on animals for its products and their ingredients. The landmark decision has netted the company a certificate of appreciation. The policy, which the company has posted on its website and will distribute to all its scientific partners, reads, in part: At Barilla we do not test our products or raw materials on animals, nor do we fund, commission, co-author it or otherwise support it, either directly or through third parties. We insist that our suppliers use alternatives to animal testing methods. We are committed to publishing and sharing any new research that uses alternatives to animal testing. We will be continuously collaborating with third parties to put in place new non-animal-alternative testing methods.

The progressive decision was recently announced in the HUGO BOSS Sustainability Report 2014 and has been an issue in discussions between HUGO BOSS and the Fur Free Alliance. HUGO BOSS will be dropping all fur, including rabbit fur, from Fall/Winter 2016 Collection onward. Joh Vinding, Chairman of the Fur Free Alliance says: ''HUGO BOSS has become a leader in the fashion world by taking a stand against animal cruelty and ending the use of fur in collections. 07/03/2015 "WALKING DEAD" STAR LEADS CAMPAIGN FOR "PIT BULL" FAIR TREATMENT

In an effort to dispel the negative myths of "pit bulls", Animal Farm Foundation is spurring a campaign for the dog guardians to come together. "Pit bull" guardians are encouraged to submit photos with their dog to show not only their passion, but strength in numbers. Helping lead the way is actor Jon Bernthal, who stars in a recent PSA promoting the Majority Project. "'Pit bull' dogs don't know that they face discrimination, but their owners do," says Bernthal in the announcement. He declares himself an actor, father, and a proud "pit bull" owner who is part of the majority of responsible people who love this maligned breed. Bernthal and others hold up a sign that reads 'I am a "pit bull" dog owner, I am the majority.' Animal Farm Foundation is an organization championing equal treatment and opportunity for 'pit bulls' since 1985.

07/02/2015 FAROE ISLAND CONSERVATIONISTS FACE TWO YEARS IN PRISON FOR NOT AIDING WHALE KILLINGS

A "draconian" new law in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic could see Farose citizens and conservationists face up to two years in prison if they fail to report sightings of migrating whales and dolphins to the Faroese authorities, or obstruct the slaughter of these animals in what is known as the "grindadráp" or "grind". While reporting sightings of pilot whales and dolphins has long been a requirement under Faroese law, as of 20 May of this year, anyone who fails to report a sighting could face a 25,000 Kroner fine - just over €3,000. If they then reoffend after the first conviction or if they violate the grind in more than one way, they face two years in prison, the Faroese police told Newsweek. So far, no arrests have been made.

07/01/2015 SINGER KESHA SUPPORTS #BECRUELTYFREE

Pop star Kesha is the latest celebrity to lend her support to Humane Society's International (HSI) campaign #BeCrueltyFree. The video was shot by celeb photographer Robert Sebree, and features Kesha primping for a night on the town using various cosmetics. Surrounded by rescued bunnies, the thought-provoking video asks consumers "Does animal testing lurk behind your cosmetics?" Kesha's addition to the campaign comes just a week after Canadian Senator Carolyn Stewart Olsen launched a federal bill to ban cosmetics animal testing and trade in Canada. It's a huge victory for HSI and Animal Alliance of Canada, which have campaigned hard and held discussions with policy makers in Ottawa and with Canada's national industry association toward making Canada the world's next cruelty-free cosmetics market.
