08/30/2019 YAHOO! JAPAN BANS IVORY SALES

Starting November 1, 2019, internet company Yahoo! will no longer sell ivory on its e-commerce platforms. Currently, Japan has 16,000 registered ivory retailers, manufacturers, and wholesalers, and Yahoo!'s ban removes a significant amount of access to ivory across Japan—where two tons of the cruelty begotten product of elephant torture were siezed by Chinese authorities from 2011 to 2016. Animal protection group Humane Society International (HSI) has long campaigned against the full shutdown of the ivory trade in Japan and is currently in talks with world leaders at the 18th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) about the global elephant ivory trade. Both HSI and the African Elephant Coalition (which represents 32 African nations) is urging Japan to eliminate the trade entirely. (vegnews.com)

08/28/2019 ATLANTA KFC SELLS OUT OF VEGAN FRIED CHICKEN IN FIVE HOURS

Yesterday, crowds of customers waited for more than an hour at a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) location in Atlanta, GA to sample vegan Beyond Fried Chicken. KFC painted its Cobb Parkway location in Smyrna bright green and erected a Beyond Fried Chicken billboard to promote its vegan chicken options—which drew crowds that wrapped around two city blocks and bumper-to-bumper cars that looped twice around the drive-thru. The limited-time promotion featured vegan nuggets and wings made with specially formulated chicken by vegan brand Beyond Meat. KFC sold out of the vegan options in five hours with customers buying the equivalent of what KFC sells of its popcorn chicken in one week. Those who made it inside the store posted glowing reviews of Beyond Fried Chicken. KFC will consider a national rollout of the vegan option based on the feedback it receives from customers yesterday. 08/26/2019 PORSCHE AIMS TO BEAT TESLA TO A FULLY LEATHER-FREE INTERIOR

Porsche recently revealed new details about its upcoming Taycan electric vehicle, a car that will compete with electric car company Tesla. Porsche's Taycan will have an option for all leather-free interiors—a goal Tesla is working on by removing leather from its steering wheel—made from Race-Tex microfiber that is comprised of mostly recycled polyester fibers. According to the car company, making its vegan-friendly interior cuts carbon dioxide emissions by 80 percent when compared to traditional animal-based materials. While the car will not be fully vegan due to animal materials present in adhesives and tires, the Taycan will feature floor mats made from recycled fishing nets. Porsche is slowly teasing the car's new features and will reveal the final look of the Taycan EV in September. Porsche joins Audi, Volkswagen, and Volvo in developing leather-free options for their new vehicle lines. (vegnews.com)

08/23/2019 BEEF INDUSTRY IS TO BLAME FOR AMAZON FIRES, ENVIRONMENTALISTS SAY

The record-breaking fires that are currently blazing in the Brazilian rainforest were likely set by farmers who want to clear the land for cattle ranching, environmental organizations say. The human-made fires happen every year in specific areas, and are a common last stage of the deforestation process in the Amazon region. "The fire that we're seeing today is a fire that's directly related to deforestation," Ane Alencar, scientific director of the Amazon Environmental Research Institute, told environmental news outlet Mongabay. "They cut the trees, leave the wood to dry and later put fire to it, so that the ashes can fertilize the soil." This year, the number of active fires amounted to 74,155 between January 1 and August 20, a spike of 85 percent compared to the same period in 2018, according to data from the Brazilian National Institute of Space Research. This region contains the largest rainforest in the world, which produces approximately 20 percent of the world's oxygen and is often called "the planet's lungs." Cattle ranching is responsible for as much as 80 percent of the ongoing deforestation of the Amazon, and a significant portion of the global beef supply originates on land that was once rainforest. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro pledged to further develop the region for farming and mining—intentionally displacing indigenous people—when he took office in January, despite warnings by environmentalists about the impact of deforestation. In response, Bolsonaro is blaming environmentalists for starting the fires in a bid to embarrass the government. (vegan.com)

08/21/2019 RECORD 12,000 VEGAN ACTIVISTS MARCH FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS IN LONDON

On Saturday, approximately 12,000 activists gathered in London for the Official Animal Rights March—the largest attendance at the event to date. Organized by animal-rights groups Surge and Animal Rebellion, the march first launched in 2016, attracting 2,500 activists and expanded in 2018 to boast more than 10,000 participants. "Animal Rebellion's message to the public, policymakers, and the future citizen's assembly is that we need to urgently end the industries of animal farming and fishing, and transition to a plant-based food system in order to avert climate breakdown, mass extinction, and ensure justice for farmed animals," Animal Rebellion spokesperson Dan Kidby said. Activists, some dressed as animals, marched with signs that said, "Be Kind, Be Vegan," "Not your mum. Not your milk," and "Vegan from ma head tomatoes." Similar events are planned this year for more than 40 cities worldwide. (vegnews.com)

08/19/2019 COLORADO GOVERNOR URGES STATE AGRICULTURE SECTOR TO GO MEATLESS

Colorado Governor Jared Polis urged the Department of Agriculture (DOA) to move toward producing crops to support the growing plant-based meat industry during a recent gathering at a new DOA research facility in Broomfield, CO. In between bites of Burger King's new plant-based Impossible Whopper, the governor explained that meatless meat is poised to be a leading industry in the future, akin to marijuana, hemp, and blockchain technology. The governor urged the Department of Agriculture to consider that the plant-based patty is made with crops that could potentially be grown in Colorado, stating, "Everything that's in this was grown on a farm." During the discussion, Polis—whose partner, first gentleman of Colorado Marlon Reis, is vegan—promised to buy 100 Impossible Whoppers for the employees of the newly opened facility to encourage the state to capitalize on the booming plant-based meat industry. 08/16/2019 GRETA THUNBERG NAMED GAME CHANGER OF THE YEAR BY GQ

Swedish vegan climate activist Greta Thunberg will be honored with the Game Changer Award at this year's GQ Men of the Year Awards—which honors men and women who shape the world's cultural landscapes—on September 3. In addition to the award, Thunberg will appear on the front cover of GQ's October issue. "The Game Changer Award was created for Greta Thunberg," GQ Editor-in-Chief Dylan Jones said. "Her fearless dedication to raising awareness of the global climate change crisis makes her the absolute embodiment of this award and on behalf of GQ we couldn't be prouder to celebrate her at the upcoming GQ Men Of The Year Awards." Sixteen-year-old Thunberg is best known for spearheading a global movement that has encouraged people to take climate change seriously, including starting the Fridays for Future movement in which students strike from school to draw attention to the climate change issue. The teen activist and her family are vegan and have given up air travel due to the damaging environmental effects of consuming animals and burning fuel. Earlier this year, Thunberg was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and also landed a major book deal with publisher Penguin Books to spotlight her work. (vegnews.com)

08/14/2019 WORLD'S LARGEST PORK PRODUCER LAUNCHES PLANT-BASED MEAT LINE

Meat brand Smithfield Foods—the world's largest producer of pork—will launch a plant-based meat line under its Pure Farmland brand in stores starting mid-September. The soy-based product line includes breakfast patties (in original and maple flavors); burger patties (one that is "Simply Seasoned" and another stuffed with dairy-free cheddar alternative); and meatballs (in "Homestyle" and Italian flavors, the latter made with dairy-free Parmesan alternative). The line also features two flavors of "starters" (Simply Seasoned and Mild Italian), plant-based meat crumbles which can be added to recipes for a boost of plant-based protein. Smithfield Foods' competitors Tyson Foods and Perdue have both developed lines to target so-called "flexitarians." However, unlike Smithfield Foods, the meat brands formulated their new lines with animal products such as eggs and beef, effectively cutting out a segment of consumers looking for fully plant-based options. Smithfield Foods' plant-based meat line will be packed in trays that are made from more than 50-percent recycled materials and available in the refrigerated section of grocery stores nationwide. 08/12/2019 COSTA RICAN FARM GOES VEGAN AFTER HEARING ACTIVIST JAMES ASPEY SPEAK

The Mastatal Villas permaculture farm and eco-retreat in Costa Rica will no longer slaughter animals after hearing a speech by James Aspey, an Australian animal activist. Aspey shared on Instagram that he gave a speech about veganism at the farm in Costa Rica, and that “the owners have subsequently decided to go vegan which means the animals on their farm will never again be slaughtered.” Aspey says that “the husband listened to my talk, which was translated for him into Spanish, and he shared everything he learned with his wife. She wrote a three-page letter to us saying how much her perspective had shifted and that she had always loved animals and hated the slaughter process ever since she was a child. She didn’t realize there was a way to live without killing. Now she does.” Several years ago, Aspey took a 365-day vow of silence to raise awareness about animal suffering and now tours the world speaking about veganism. (vegnews.com)

08/08/2019 WORLD'S LARGEST HAMBURGER PRODUCER TO SUPPLY VEGAN MEAT TO BRAZIL

This week, Brazil-based Marfrig Global Foods SA—the world's largest producer of animal-based hamburgers—announced its partnership with grain and oil company Archer Daniels Midland Co (ADM), which will result in the launch of a vegan burger throughout Brazil. While ADM will provide the raw materials, the meat company will be responsible for producing, marketing, distributing, and selling the forthcoming plant-based burger to restaurant and retail partners. "Together, Marfrig and ADM will produce a 100-percent vegetable burger with a meat-like flavor and texture. We want to give consumers the power of choice. It's up to them," Marfrig CEO Eduardo Miron said. "The vegetable burger comes to complement Marfrig's product portfolio and serve all market channels in which we operate." In May, Marfrig's competitor JBS SA—the largest meat company in the world—unveiled a vegan burger it aims to launch under its Seara brand during the APAS trade show. (vegnews.com)

08/06/2019 VEGAN RETAIL SALES GROW FIVE TIMES FASTER THAN ALL FOOD SALES

Sales of plant-based food grew five times faster than total food sales in the United States in the last year, according to data recently released by advocacy group Good Food Institute (GFI) and trade group Plant Based Food Association (PBFA). Compiled by analytics firm SPINS over a 52-week period ending on April 29, 2019, the data shows that while the retail food market in the United States grew by two percent, sales in the plant-based food sector—which is now worth $4.5 billion—have grown by 11 percent. This data is supported by financial reports released by individual vegan companies, including Beyond Meat which reported a net revenue of $67.3 million last week, attributing it to an increase in sales volumes—representing an increase of 287 percent from this time last year. "This is just the beginning of a massive growth period for plant-based foods," GFI Director of Corporate Engagement Caroline Bushnell said. "Consumer appetite for plant-based foods is surging as consumers increasingly make the switch to foods that match their changing values and desire for more sustainable options." (vegnews.com)

08/02/2019 UKRAINE'S ONLY FOIE GRAS PROCUDER SHUTS DOWN OVER CRUELTY CONCERNS

This week, Ukranian foie gras producer MHP announced it would cease operations and sell its foie gras farm. MHP's move comes after an undercover investigation was released in April by animal-rights group Open Cages which documented horrific abuse at a foie gras producer in Ukraine—presumably MHP as it is the only such business in the country that keeps 20,000 birds on its farm. The investigation uncovered birds being violently thrown from trucks into cages, injured in various ways, and force-fed with a metal pole that workers lubricated with engine oil. The investigator witnessed approximately 20 birds per day dying due to stress and injuries from these abuses. (vegnews.com)
