Three hundred of WildAid's supporters including donors, celebrities, politicians, and San Francisco business leaders gathered on Friday night at Terra Gallery to celebrate another year of accomplishments. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society president and founder Captain Paul Watson was arrested in Frankfurt, Germany, on Sunday. 05/14/2012 CARRIE ANN INABA RESCUES OPOSSUM FROM PARKING LOT

Carrie Ann Inaba's list of good deeds towards animals just keeps on growing. From having her own web series about helping shelter cats to hosting this year's Genesis Awards, Inaba can't seem to get enough of animals. Recently, the "Dancing with the Stars" judge stumbled upon a young opossum in the TV studio parking lot where the popular reality dancing show films. Instead of walking on by the little guy, she decided to give him a helping hand. Not only was the opossum injured, but it was threatened by workers in the area. Inaba found a box, put him in it with some food and water and then let him rest in her trailer. Then she took him home and did research on what opossum's like to eat and talked with wildlife rehabs about his chance of survival. Luckily, Inaba found a place for opossum. Shadow Oaks Wildlife Care, a California volunteer rescue organization, took him in where he will be rehabilitated and then released into the wild.

05/12/2012 IAN SOMERHALDER NEEDS YOUR HELP TO OPEN ANIMAL SANCTUARY!

Ian Somerhalder plans to open an animal sanctuary in his home state of Louisiana, a project which would not only house abused animals, but fight the very human issue of bullying. He is hoping to accomplish this through his charitable foundation, and ISF needs help to make this dream a reality! On Thursday, Somerhalder tweeted his vision for the project: "This sanctuary [is] for animals & to bring troubled youth, teach compassion w/ abandoned animals w/ their own behavioral issues - lets end bullying!!!" The ISF website expanded on his description, explaining that they hope to go beyond the traditional idea of a sanctuary. The plan is to allow the misunderstood animals to interact with humans who have bullying issues, with an ultimate goal of helping both parties to heal and grow. They're asking anyone who believes in their message to consider contributing to the cause. They say they need $5 million to bring this project to life.

05/11/2012 PAMELA ANDERSON RESCUES INDIAN STREET DOG

Pamela Anderson has welcomed a furry new addition into her home: a stray puppy from India. The dog was found at a Mumbai construction site and rescued by PETA, who then brought the pup to the States at Anderson's request. Now puppy Pyari (which means "loved one") has a cushy new future, and Indian animal activists hope that Anderson's generous act will help fight the stigma of adopting mixed breeds and local strays. As for Anderson, she's delighted with the new addition. "I already have rescued dogs, and I urge everyone to join me in adopting a homeless 'desi' dog from their local animal shelter or the streets instead of buying a so-called purebred. I'm tickled to be able to give Pyari a loving home. Desi dogs are stars," she says.

05/11/2012 ASHLEY JUDD FUNDS EFFORTS TO SAVE ABUSED DOG'S LIFE

Actress Ashley Judd is personally involved in the rehabilitation of a severely abused cockapoo named Walter - and despite her efforts, it's not clear yet whether he's going to make it. Walter was not only starved by his previous guardian, but he was also thrown out of the window of a moving car. He was rescued by Tennessee-based organization Snooty Giggles, who partnered with the Animalia Health and Wellness for Animals clinic to try and save his life. And that's where Judd stepped in. The actress heard about Walter's plight and contacted both organizations. She not only volunteered to foot his medical bills, but she also visits Walter every day, emotionally supporting his recovery. Still, it might not be enough - Walter's condition is very fragile.

05/10/2012 BOB BARKER HELPS GIVE HOME TO HIV- INFECTED CHIMPS

Retired game show host Bob Barker has made a generous donation to Chimp Haven that will provide immediate relief for five HIV-infected chimpanzees from Texas who desperately need a permanent home. Barker learned that the chimps had been left behind at a facility that had closed down from overcrowding and a lack of money. Other sanctuaries took in many of the Texas facilities animals, but none wanted to take in Doc, JoJo, Murphy, Flick and Pierre because of their illness. The plight of the primates sent the television celebrity into action. Barker's contribution of $230,000 to Chimp Haven, Inc. will help the chimpanzee sanctuary begin building a habitat for the Texas chimpanzees. Barker will also be underwriting the cost of their care for one year.

05/10/2012 MILEY CYRUS RESCUES DOG FROM BOX OUTSIDE WALMART

Miley Cyrus should update her resume to note that she's a singer, actress and animal rescuer extraordinaire. Whether it's adopting a pup for boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, taking care of her own rescue dogs or offering to help Khloe Kardashian find a rescue pup of her own, Cyrus is dedicated to giving good homes to the animals at the shelter. In her latest rescue effort, the singer didn't even have to go to the shelter. A pup was left in a box outside of Walmart, so Cyrus brought him home. She tweeted, "he was left in a box Infront of Walmart. I don't understand how people can be so cruel. That's why we named him Happy."

05/09/2012 AZERBAIJAN INTENSIFIES KILLINGS OF STRAY ANIMALS DUE TO EUROVISION CONTEST 2012

Baku's authorities created the Department for fighting against stray animals, which sends in the streets professional dog-catchers on a white pick-up with the sign "icra hakimiyyet," meaning "executive power," shooting hundreds of animals, especially dogs. On May 2012, Baku will host the famous Eurovision song contest, so many singers, musicians, important people and tourists from all over the word will visit the city. By chance, in these months killings of strays are enormously intensified and it's clear that the city administration want to clean up the streets from animals.

Morrissey, the longtime animal rights activist, has written a letter on behalf of the Asian wing of PETA urging a leading Japanese clothing company, Uniqlo, to shun farmers who procure wool from a controversial method called "mulesing." Mulesing removes chunks of sheeps' flesh along with wool to prevent maggot infestation. The practice is used by some Austrailian farmers for sheep exportation.

05/08/2012 PRINCE WILLIAM TAKES A STAND AGAINST POACHING

Fresh off of celebrating his one year wedding anniversary to Kate Middleton Sunday, Prince William is said to be slated to help highlight the problem of animal poaching in Africa by taking part in an anti-poaching project and documentary. Prince William is "furious" about the "senseless slaughter" of Max, a hand-reared rhinoceros who was killed last year by poachers at a wildlife preserve in Kenya. The 29-year old royal's friend, adventurer and British TV presenter Ben Fogle, told The (London) Sunday Telegraph, "I am hoping to work with William on an anti-poaching project and documentary. I was lucky enough to go out to Botswana with him a few years ago, so it would be nice to do more with him. We're both vehemently passionate about stopping poaching." Prince William has long been interested in conservation. In 2001, he began assisting with the Lewa Wildlife Preserve conservation project, located in central Kenya. The 29 year old royal became so moved by his work there that he became a patron of the Tusk Trust charity.

05/08/2012 ENRIQUE IGLESIAS RESCUES A GERMAN SHEPHERD

Pop star Enrique Iglesias is a new dad - to a rescued German shepherd! According to Teddy Hilton, Iglesias adopted the pooch from L.A.'s Westside German Shepherd Rescue, which is a no-kill shelter. German Shepherds are often classified as an aggressive breed, and many end up in shelters, so it's nice to see a celeb doing his part to reduce that number. The new dog, whose name has not yet been released, has definitely found a pooch-friendly home, considering that Iglesias also has two other dogs: Lucas, who is also a German shepherd, and golden retriever Grammy. The singer often takes his dogs on yachts and jet skis, so it's a good bet that the new addition will have lots of fun adventures this summer.

05/07/2012 CANADA'S SEALERS HAVE KILLED OVER 63,800 PUPS!

Canada's sealers have killed over 63,800 seal pups, all under 3 months of age. Over 1,500 were under 3 weeks of age. All these seal pups have been killed on the public dime in order to add to existing stockpiles of pelts. Carino, the only pelt processor that is buying pelts this year, is hoping that new markets for the pelts will appear. Meanwhile, the government of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, where most of the sealers live, is giving even more of its taxpayers' money to the sealing industry, this time funding domestic market development by a Newfoundland company, Vogue Furriers. So whereas in previous years, the Canadian government has made a point of claiming that this is a "market-based hunt," with almost no government subsidies, now there is no way to hide that this slaughter is 100% government subsidized. Sen. Mac Harb has once again introduced a bill in the Canadian Senate to end the seal "hunt," and this time, another Senator, Sen. Larry Campbell, seconded the bill. This will allow for debate on the floor of the Senate.

05/05/2012 PERU PELICAN MASS DIE-OFF TO BE INVESTIGATED

Peru's oceanographic agency says it will investigate the deaths of hundreds of pelicans on northern beaches where nearly 900 dolphins were recently found dead. Puerto Eten fisherman's association president Fernando Niquen says his group found about 1,200 dead pelicans last Thursday and Friday along a 105-mile stretch of coastline. The government's Institute of the Sea says it found nearly 600 dead birds, mostly pelicans but also gannets, along a 43-mile stretch. Its regional chief, Edward Barriga, recalled a mass die-off of pelicans and cormorants in the same area in 1997 due to the absence of anchovies blamed on the El Nino meteorological phenomenon. Coast Guard official Cesar Villanueva in Lambayeque said he has never seen so many dying pelicans on the beach in 25 years on the job.

05/05/2012 WILDLIFE SERVICES KILLED OVER 50,000 ANIMALS BY ACCIDENT

One of the ostensible purposes and functions of the Department of Agriculture is to protect natural resources. Yet Sacramento Bee reporter Tom Knudson has uncovered startling news about the Department of Agriculture's little-known branch, Wildlife Services, which reveals the organization's habitual, indiscriminate, and even illegal killing of animals, including federally protected ones. Many of North America's most iconic species, such as wolves and coyotes, have been targeted for "selective elimination" because they are thought to be most prone to attack livestock and game animals. Since 2000, agency employees have inadvertently killed more than 50,000 animals that were not problems or threats to livestock and game animals. These include federally protected gold and bald eagles, several species wildlife biologists deem rare or imperiled, and 1,100 dogs, including family companion animals.

05/04/2012 ELLEN DEGENERES DISCUSSES VEGAN JOURNEY

Ellen DeGeneres is recognized for her animal activism and maintaining a vegan diet. However, the journey of going vegan wasn't all butterflies and rainbows for the 54-year-old. Growing up in New Orleans and Texas, DeGeneres was used to eating meat and heavy dishes like steak and sausage-laden red beans. In an interview with the Associated Press, she revealed her first attempt to go vegan was 15 years ago, but after six months it came to an end. What changed her mind and officially made it stick? Four years ago she had an epiphany. What really clicked for DeGeneres was the subject of chickens. After educating herself through undercover documentaries and books, she and her wife Portia de Rossi became full-fledged vegans. Even though it was hard for DeGeneres to change her diet, she's embraced it wholeheartedly. She's promoted a vegan lifestyle through her own vegan website "Going Vegan with Ellen" and is also set to open a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles.

05/04/2012 BO DEREK STANDS UP AGAINST HORSE SLAUGHTER

Actress Bo Derek has joined forces with Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) to fight against the inhumane practice of slaughtering horses for food. Speaking on behalf of the Animal Welfare Institute, Derek spoke in favor of Sen. Landrieu and her legislation to end the constant mistreatment of horses, called the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. In 2011, Congress decided not to renew a ban on federal funding of inspectors at horse slaughter plants, and the decision worried Landrieu and other lawmakers. Against the practice, the Senator and her supporters fear it will ignite a return to the mistreatment of horses. Horses are not just a part of American history, they have been companions to humans since the birth of this nation. When they age, or become ill, sending them to a slaughterhouse where they are brutally disposed of is not the form of euthanasia they deserve.

05/03/2012 SCARLETT JOHANSSON RELIED ON RAW VEGAN DIET TO BECOME AVENGER

Scarlet Johansson is known for her acting chops and, of course, her enviable curves. But, to be in a super hero film, whether you're a man or a woman, it takes some dedication and diet changes to get into the shape of your life. For Johansson to look like a Russian spy and to fit into that Avengers suit, the diet of choice was vegan and raw. The actress said, "The thing is right before we started I was lifting all these weights and eating raw vegan. But the only reason I was doing that was to fix my previous diet because that was a Paleo diet. So I've had the extreme of everything. Because when you're training you rely on your trainer to help you lose muscle and gain muscle and whatever it takes to change your body. So I'm always following some crazy regime. And after lots of fighting and training and raw vegan food you can fit into a cat suit."

05/02/2012 THOUSAND PROTESTERS FOR THE GREEN HILL CLOSURE

During a march on April 28 with more than 1.000 people for the closure of Green Hill in Italy, Europe biggest breeder of lab beagles, a big group of protesters passed over the fences and entered the compound of Green Hill, opening the sheds and freeing at least 30 dogs in an open act of liberation. The cries of happiness and applauses from protesters, and the support this action is getting on a national and international level, even in the media, is a milestone for the end of the idea that animals can be used in lab tests.
