05/24/2019 PLANT-BASED MEAT SALES HIT $19.5 BILLION IN 2018

The global plant-based meat industry clocked sales at $19.5 billion in 2018, according to a report by market research firm Euromonitor International. The report identified that climate-change concerns are the primary driver for increased sales of plant-based meats worldwide. "Meat intake is mostly reduced by consumers trying to reinforce healthier eating habits and worrying about climate change. Growing attention to welfare for animals, farmers, societies, and employees at large is also noticed among them," Euromonitor International consultant David Hedin said. According to Euromonitor International's Lifestyles survey, 41.9 percent of respondents believe that climate change will impact their lives adversely between 2019 and 2024, with residents in the United Kingdom, United States, and Russia voicing the greatest amount of concern among global citizens about environmental issues. When it comes to vegan dairy products, the global market is currently worth $17.3 billion and research firm MarketsandMarkets predicts that it will nearly double to $29.6 billion by 2023. 05/22/2019 TWITTER CO-FOUNDER INVESTS MORE IN BEYOND MEAT THAN HIS OWN COMPANY

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams—through his investment firm Obvious Ventures—holds a $414 million stake in vegan brand Beyond Meat, which is substantially greater than the $10 million stake he currently holds in Twitter, according to calculations released by Bloomberg's Billionaires Index. Both Williams and fellow Twitter co-founder Christopher Isaac "Biz" Stone—who has been vegan for years—were early backers of Beyond Meat, prior to the company’s debut of the Beyond Burger. On May 2, Beyond Meat became the first vegan meat company to be publicly traded on NASDAQ and its initial public offering (IPO), which spiked as much as 163 percent, was the most successful of 2019. Beyond Meat's top six shareholders, including its CEO Ethan Brown, collectively netted $1.6 billion after its IPO. (vegnews.com)

05/20/2019 AFRICAN SWINE FLU SET TO KILL 200 MILLION PIGS IN CHINA

Financial institution Rabobank estimates that 200 million pigs will perish this year in China due to the African Swine Flu (ASF) epidemic, which amounts to approximately one third of the country's pig population. The virus first appeared in China in August and became an epidemic by December, spreading to other regions such as Cambodia and Vietnam. Last month, while the Chinese government stated that ASF was under control, animals across the region continue to die (or are culled as a precaution), raising concerns that China's pork industry may collapse. This year, prices for pig flesh is expected to increase to record highs in the region as demand outstrips supply, and the bubbling trade war with the United States means Chinese imports of the animal product would be costly. As a solution, several companies have begun to offer alternative (vegan) pork products, sans disease and animal cruelty. (vegnews.com)

05/15/2019 ANIMAL-RIGHTS ACTIVIST DORIS DAY DIES AT 97

Actress, singer, and animal-rights activist Doris Day died at the age of 97 after succumbing to complications of pneumonia. The actress appeared in dozens of classic Hollywood films, starred in her own comedy series The Doris Day Show, and recorded hundreds of songs, including "Que Sera Sera." Throughout her illustrious career, Day fought for animal-rights and is famously quoted saying, "I've never met an animal I didn't like, and I can't say the same thing about people." In 1971, Day founded the non-profit organization Actors and Others for Animals with the mission to implement animal welfare standards within the film industry. In 1978, the activist founded the Doris Day Pet Foundation (now called the "Doris Day Animal Foundation") to help control the homeless companion animal population through initiatives such as World Spay Day—which helped spay and neuter 1.5 million animals in its first 15 years. Day also supported various initiatives to shut down puppy mills, created the Doris Day Animal League (now a part of the Humane Society of the United States) as a voice for the animals in legislation, and helped airlift the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina to safety in 2005. On her 90th birthday, in lieu of gifts, Day asked fans to donate to Doris Day Animal Foundation, raising more than $90,000 to support her cause. The actress famously wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the statement: "Be kind to animals or I'll kill you" and was affectionately known as "The Dog Catcher of Beverly Hills" for her rescue and fostering efforts. 05/13/2019 SOPRANOS' EDIE FALCO SPOKE OUT FOR COWS ON MOTHER'S DAY

Vegan actress Edie Falco and vegan Olympic soccer player Kara Lang Romero stood up for cows this Mother's Day by demanding that Nestlé shift toward plant-based ice cream. In April, animal-rights organization Compassion Over Killing (COK) released shocking undercover footage of mother cows being stomped, stabbed, and beaten and calves being burnt with hot irons to prevent horn growth at Martin Farms in Pennsylvania, a Nestlé supplier. "Nestlé, show kindness to mother cows and their babies. Ditch dehorning and churn out vegan options," Falco and Romero sent to the company in a Facebook message, urging fans to do the same. A petition to support COK's campaign has been signed by more than 17,000 people. A longtime vegetarian, Falco was inspired to go vegan in 2017 after working with animal-rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), stating: "It's hard to justify working for animal-rights when you eat animal-based foods." 05/10/2019 SCIENTISTS CREATE PLASTIC THAT CAN BE RECYCLED FOREVER

Endlessly recyclable plastic is now possible thanks to researchers at the United States Department of Energy's (DOE) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in California. The scientists recently published a report outlining their development of polydiketoenamine (PDK)—a material similar to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with a few key differences. The structure of most plastics is comprised of large molecules called polymers which are themselves made up of smaller carbon containing monomers. To create items such as water bottles, bags, multi-colored straws, and stretchy foodservice wrap, manufacturers add various chemicals and fillers to give plastics desired qualities—which makes recycling different plastics together difficult as the end result is unpredictable and/or undesirable. The Berkeley Lab researchers discovered a way to close this loop with PDK, which is "circular" as it breaks down into its original molecular structure with the application of acid and can be reused nearly endlessly before being turned into fuel at the end of its lifespan. 05/08/2019 80 PERCENT OF WU-TANG CLAN IS VEGAN

The majority of the ten members of legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan are now vegan, according to group member Jason Hunter (known professionally as "Inspectah Deck.") "My end goal is to become a vegan. Eighty percent of the Clan are vegan right now," Hunter told Metro UK. "It's just about healthier living. Once you get older, your body functions differently. The best thing to do is be preventive about a lot of things. You can eat right, that's a big plus once you hit 40. Keep your muscles tight and have good circulation. I also try to drink fresh juice, especially on the road." Clan member RZA has been an outspoken vegan for many years and recently worked with fellow members Ghostface Killah and GZA to promote the launch of the vegan-friendly Impossible Slider at White Castle through a comedic, four-part video campaign that was chosen as a finalist for the Tribeca X award by the Tribeca Film Festival. The Wu-Tang Clan is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its hit album "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" with the Gods of Rap tour alongside legendary musicians Public Enemy, De La Soul, and DJ Premier. 05/06/2019 BEYOND MEAT HAS TOP IPO OF 2019

On May 2, Beyond Meat became the first vegan meat company to go public—and it did so in a big way. The vegan brand initially expected its stocks to be priced between $19 to $21, which later rose to $25 as early investor interest grew and opened on Thursday morning at a whopping $46 per share. Beyond Meat's success throughout its first day of trading—which saw surges in stock prices up to 163 percent—makes it the top performing first-day stock of the year, beating out last month's launch of Silk Road Medical Inc. on NASDAQ. Beyond Meat secured $241 million from the sale of 9.63 million shares and is currently valued at $3.8 billion. In the category of companies who have raised $200 million from going public, Beyond Meat's IPO is the best performing since before the 2008 financial crisis. (vegnews.com)

05/02/2019 Natalie Portman spoke on veganism to 16,000 students

Vegan actress Natalie Portman spoke at WE Day, a gathering of young activists held in Los Angeles last week. She gave a speech in front of 16,000 students, focusing on the connection between different forms of injustice, particularly feminism and veganism. "Only after I became active in women's issues did I realize that my veganism was related to those very issues. Dairy and eggs don't just come from cows and chickens, they come from female cows and female chickens. We're exploiting female bodies and abusing the magic of female animals to create eggs and milk.", Portman said. She has been advocating for animal rights for nearly a decade. "It doesn’t take a lot to draw the line from how we treat animals to how we treat humans.", she added. She asked the youth to "eat how they believe", and urged them to continue fighting against injustice in all forms. (vegnews.com)
