Lu's Story

| More

At the beginning she refused to drink water, she was too scared to get close to the plate with food. She spent a day without having any physiologic needs. While sleeping, she used to have nightmares, she was twitching around and chocking. Going out was extremely hard for her.

Lu is one of the beagles that were rescued from experiments at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb. Thanks to the activists from Animal Friends and the sensitized media, we discovered this sad case of horrible animal torture on July 21, 2005 and we hospitalized a dog that was back then nothing but a number.

The first days included the gaining of Lu's faith and meeting her with a completely new and different world. In first days she refused to drink water, she was too scared to come close to the plate with food. She spent a day without having any physiologic needs. While sleeping, she used to have nightmares, she was twitching around and chocking. Going out was extremely hard for her. The first obstacle she had were the stairs, which she was afraid of. In consideration that her back right foot was broken and a titanium plate implanted, she could not climb up or go down the stairs. We carried her through the doorway. When we let her down on the floor she didn't move a bit - she was just standing there immovable as being a toy-dog. We used the gesticulation to make her understand the word 'come'.

The grass, which is the most common thing the life of every land animal, for Lu it was one completely unknown thing. She didn't show any desire to get close to it. As the time was passing by, she started to sniff the grass and later even to walk on it, then she also begun to drink and eat from her plate, to do her physiologic needs outside on the grass. After some time she even started to open herself and get rid of her fears. We noticed her love for small children, people, rides in the train and in the car, going for walks and other animals.

In these days Lu loves to eat a lot and to be in the kitchen while we prepared something to eat. She could sit there for hours or just lie down and observe everything. The first day she came to our home we had put down a big pillow for her. She remembered that pillow as something nice so she still likes it very much. Lu is a big coddle and she adores to play, frazzle newspapers and plastic bags, just like a small puppy. In the house we like to say that now she is living out everything she did not have before. We were scared that after the castration she might change, but she did not, she remained our good old Lu as we knew her. We have to accentuate in this story that Lu is five years old and she was born on January 29, 2001.

Since Lu came into our home, our life has changed. In a good way. We know that we've saved a living creature; a creature in whose black eyes you can see her gratitude and love. It could sound funny to someone when you say that in an animal’s eyes there is gratitude and love to see, but we have to accept the fact that God has created them and us to live all together in this planet. If there is someone to whom we are thankful because he has helped us a lot in Lu's recovery that would be our Phoebe, a mongrel of a pinscher and a terrier we adopted from the street three years ago. She actuated Lu to play. Every time we went out, she took care of her. Lu has followed Phoebe and this way she learned to pee on the grass.

It is very hard to describe this last year in just a few sentences, considering that every day we found out something new; like a step to the better. We could talk about this beautiful creature for hours and hours. When you see an abandoned animal without anyone to take care of it, give it at least some water and don't send him or her away. Animals are not dangerous. If there is someone who's dangerous, those would be humans whom God has given a bigger intelligence, but they don't know how to use it in order to make everyone feel better in the world.
