05/31/2022 Fur Free Europe ECI

Eurogroup for Animals, along with its members and other organisations, today supported the launch of the European Citizens Initiative (ECI) Fur Free Europe: in one year they will have to collect one million signatures to finally end fur in Europe. The Fur Free Europe ECI calls on the EU to ban fur farming and the placement on the market of farmed fur products, since fur is unethical, unsafe and unsustainable. The fur industry also poses a serious threat to native biodiversity, with some farmed species, like American mink and raccoon dogs, which escaped from fur farms and are now considered Invasive Alien Species (IAS) causing significant adverse impacts on European native wildlife. Animal Friends Croatia fully supports this initiative and calls all to sign the petition. (www.eurogroupforanimals.org)

05/27/2022 Court Could Grant Happy The Elephant Human Rights

In a potentially monumental case for animal rights, New York’s highest court is ruminating on Happy the elephant’s “personhood.” The court will soon decide whether Happy is being unlawfully imprisoned at the Bronx Zoo. Happy, a 51-year-old Asian elephant, was captured from the wild in the early 1970s. She was shipped to the US, arriving at the Bronx Zoo in 1977. She is one of two Asian elephants living in captivity at the zoo – they are kept in separate enclosures and can only touch each other through a fence with their trunks. Throughout the ’80s, the elephants were forced to give rides at the zoo, perform tricks, and participate in tug-of-war competitions. Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) – a nonprofit defending the civil rights of elephants, dolphins, great apes, and whales – is campaigning for Happy’s release. The organization insists that Happy’s captivity mimics that of solitary confinement, and robs the animal of her right to express her natural instincts. (plantbasednews.org)

05/19/2022 New Study Findings Could Reduce Animal Testing In The Medical Field

The findings of a new study could reduce animal testing in the medical field. Together, researchers from the US’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Inotiv Inc., and the Consumer Product Safety Commission produced a new method for screening skin allergens. The researchers examined 92 chemicals. Seventy-seven percent of the results “agreed with those of a common animal test method.” According to NIST, the new effective method is not just more ethical than animal testing, but “potentially cheaper and faster” too. Published in the journal Toxics, the researchers hope their method will become standardized. This will therefore reduce the number of animals used in science. (plantbasednews.org)

05/12/2022 Petition Calls For Drastic Reduction In Animal Farming

World leaders have been urged to take meaningful climate action by reducing global meat and dairy production. A petition that garnered more than 53,000 signatures was submitted to various higher-ups last week (May 5), reaching the leaders of America, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the EU, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, and the UK. Animal protection organization Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), which distributed the petition, said the matter is one of increasing urgency. “Our global leaders cannot continue to bury their heads in the sand,” said Sarah Moyes, senior campaigns manager at CIWF. “Livestock emissions play a significant role in the current climate emergency, yet this has been virtually overlooked by world leaders.” (plantbasednews.org)
