Animal Friends seeks new volunteers and activists

- The alarming state of animals requires personal activism for animal rights

It is the beginning of 2015 and the human society has been making progress, but animals are still legally treated as objects. Stripped of their rights, they are held in captivity on industrial farms, fur farms, in laboratories, zoos and circuses, tortured in the terrible conditions of mass production facilities, subjected to the horror of slaughterhouses…

The human greed for flesh, fur, tusks, horns and antlers has brought "free" animals to the brink of extinction. Many of them could soon be wiped off the face of the Earth by aggressive hunting and fishing, habitat destruction, rampant deforestation, suffocation caused by ingesting waste plastic, asphyxiation in fishing nets, water pollution and environmental destruction. The production and killing of animals is also closely related to world hunger and food shortage for the growing human population.

Time flies and at the end of last year we find ourselves wondering whether we could have made time to distribute informational fliers, collect signatures for petitions, volunteer at a booth, send an e-mail or share a call for change via social networks, or in some other way contribute to the animal liberation and sustainable living movement. The beginning of the year is the right time to make a resolution to change, devise a monthly plan of volunteer activities, and start acting for the animals throughout the whole year.

Animals depend on our engagement as educated individuals to spread awareness and information on animal rights, sustainable living and actively contribute to the positive changes in society, both locally and globally. It is important to consider how much time we are ready to dedicate annually to helping animal welfare organizations, because that is how we can help animals and advocate for their rights.

Animal Friends invites all potential animal rights activists to visit our website at www.prijatelji-zivotinja.hr. You can contact us to order fliers and other informational materials to distribute in your community, or help by doing translations, paying membership, collecting signatures for petitions, working at a booth, preparing food for potlucks, and in many other ways.

Activism and volunteering do not require a lot of time. We can help animals from our family homes or the office. By advocating adoption from animal shelters instead of buying companion animals, explaining to friends the White List of companies that do not test on animals, objecting to fur, or treating a friend to a vegan dinner, you can change a life, or even save one!

Let the words of Margaret Mead be our guiding light: "Never doubt that a small group of concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Every animal rights activist and volunteer, be it a student, senior citizen or worker, should be proud of the dedication to and time spent furthering the animal rights cause. We at Animal Friends wish to thank our former, present and future volunteers for building a better and happier world for all living creatures through united action.

Animal Friends collaborates with the Volunteers' Centre Zagreb and will on request sign Volunteer Agreements and fill out Volunteer Books.
