01/28/2021 Sweden Suspends Mink Fur Farming Following COVID-19 Outbreaks

Sweden is suspending mink fur farming throughout 2021 in the wake of COVID-19. The announcement follows 13 separate outbreaks of the virus in the country’s mink farms. Anti-fur group Humane Society International welcomed the news. However, it is now urging Sweden to end ‘the cruelty and public health risks by permanently ending fur farming’. Dr. Joanna Swabe is the senior director of public affairs for Humane Society International/Europe. In a statement sent to PBN, she said: “While we applaud the Swedish government for taking the decision to suspend mink farming, we urge it to go further and permanently shut down this cruel and dangerous industry for good.“ Confining millions of animals to small wire cages for fur production not only causes terrible suffering and deprivation. But, scientists have also concluded that they could represent a serious reservoir for SARS-CoV-2 and thus pose a very real risk to public health.“ The Swedish authorities have also recognized that the biosecurity measures taken so far have proved insufficient.” (plantbasednews.org)

01/17/2021 The first free calf in Croatia was born!

After the earthquake devastation, there were many sorrowful stories of animal suffering. But between those stories, three pigs and one pregnant cow from the village Župić had found a new home in the safety of animal rescue Farmica which is in the small city of Našice. For days they have been expecting the birth of Saravas' calf and now everyone here is very glad after the birth has gone smoothly. Luka Oman from the association Animal Friends Croatia has helped to relocate animals into their new home, along with other activists from Farmica and Pobjeda, and has pointed out that this birth is a symbol of hope. „We are happy that Sarava has given birth peacefully. For the first time in eight years of her life, her baby won’t be taken away to be sold and will experience joy and love in the days ahead of them. “ Sarava is finally happy and has been nurturing her baby with all the care and love she has.

01/14/2021 Rabies vaccination every two or three years

After launching a petition four years ago to make vaccination of dogs against rabies mandatory for a period specified by the vaccine manufacturer instead of every year, Animal Friends Croatia welcomes the long-awaited news. The order was issued by the Ministry of Agriculture to protect animal health from infectious and parasitic diseases. Unlike the previous vaccination obligation against rabies, it is now stipulated that the vaccination period must be entered in the pet passport and the Lysacan application in accordance with the vaccine manufacturer's instructions. "This is great news for all dog caregivers. Finally, we have a logical provision that vaccinating dogs against rabies is mandatory every two or even three years, as most vaccines provide immunity for such period, ” said the AFC.
