In the May 2012 issue of the SHOP IN PLUS magazine, on pages 22-23, one may read the text titled "Vegan diet in service of beauty and health", which is about delicious, healthy and diverse vegan diet.

Last year, the former US president Bill Clinton has become vegan after suffering a heart attack, to prevent further development of his heart condition. Tennis player Venus Williams has switched to vegan diet to reduce joint inflammation and other consequences of autoimmune disease she is suffering from. Actresses Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have opened a vegan restaurant, while Russell Brand, Ted Danson and Ozzy Osbourne have joined celebrities who were already vegans, like Jared Leto, Tobey Maguire, Olivia Wilde, Woody Harrelson and many others.

Whether they want to improve their health, maintain a desired body weight, to look better and younger or they are against animal exploitation and killing and are concerned about the environment, they all agree on one thing – diverse vegan diet is delicious and healthy. In Croatia and the rest of the world, the number of people practicing vegan diet is increasing. It is a diet based on plant food – fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds and it excludes all animal based ingredients.

Nutritionists confirm that a balanced vegan diet is the healthiest lifestyle. American Dietetic Association claims that "appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases", while appropriate for people of all ages, even for those with increased nutritional needs, like children in development, pregnant women, breastfeeding women and very active athletes.

Research shows that people who lead a vegan lifestyle enjoy many health benefits, like lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, healthier body mass index, lower risk of heart diseases and cancer, better control and prevention of diabetes. The number of vegans in the US exceeds the number of vegetarians, and there is a similar tendency in Croatia, with over 160 thousand people who practice the vegan diet. Judging by the health benefits, the importance of sustainable development and focusing on ethical choices, the vegan diet is the diet of the future, which you can start making today.
