- 15 June 2019, 8am-3pm, Ban Jelačić Square: a presentation of animal protection organizations

Love cannot be bought – say animal protection organizations which have been taking care of abandoned animals for years and have, therefore, been reassured of this fact countless times.

Between 8 am and 3 pm today at Ban Jelačić Square in Zagreb, members of the Animal Protection Network will be introducing their work, as well as some of the abandoned animals that are in their care and waiting to be taken to their forever foster homes. The event titled Love Is Not Bought was also recognized by the City of Zagreb, with mayor Milan Bandić making a personal appearance in support of the event at 11 am.

The Animal Protection Network organizations invite citizens to visit them at the town square, take a look at the abandoned animals searching for new families, talk to the representatives of the organizations, and enjoy the pleasant social gathering. At the same time, they can find out all about the advantages of sterilization, the importance of microchipping, the obligations of cat and dog owners, and other similar topics. In addition to that, the organizations are presenting their work and, through their inspiring stories, raising awareness of the issues surrounding abandoned animals and the fact that each of us can help.

Abandoned animals are a major issue in many parts of Croatia, both because of irresponsible citizens and due to the lack of enforcement of the Animal Protection Act. Therefore, this event serves as a medium through which animal protection organizations wish to draw attention to the difficult situations they are forced to deal with on a daily basis due to the fact that they are unfairly carrying the burden of caring for abandoned animals, which is the responsibility of local communities, as is the control over microchipping all dogs to ensure that every dog in the area is tagged with a microchip.

The City of Zagreb and over 150 other local communities have enforced permanent sterilization with recorded exceptions as a way of controlling the reproduction of cats and dogs, so as to prevent the emergence of unwanted puppies and kittens that are inhumanely rejected or killed in horrific ways.

The Animal Protection Network is a project initiated by Animal Friends Croatia and is made up of over 50 animal protection organizations working towards a common goal: promoting adoption over buying, responsible guardianship, and the castration of cats and dogs.

The message that animal protection organizations are sending to all the visitors is: adopting saves lives, be the heroes that animals deserve. They are not objects and love is not for sale.
