07/24/2005 UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS IS POISONING BIRDS!

The University of Illinois is in the practice of regularly poisoning unwanted birds living in and around the campus cattle barns. Specifically, starlings and house sparrows are targeted.API has made the University aware of the pain and suffering endured by poisoned birds and of the many humane non-lethal options that exist for resolving conflicts with wild birds. While the University has taken steps to properly design the new and re-designed animal housing and handling areas to reduce or eliminate conflicts with wild birds, it continues to use toxic poisons to kill starlings rather than update the remaining facilities to exclude "nuisance" birds. The poison most commonly used to kill starlings is DRC-1339 - a toxic substance that causes birds to die slowly and exhibit behavior associated with excruciating pain and suffering. In blackbirds, for example, DRC-1339 takes up to three days following ingestion to cause mortality, by way of irreversible kidney and heart damage.

07/06/2005 ACTIVISTS STRIP TO THONGS TO OPPOSE SPAIN BULL RUN!

PAMPLONA, Spain (Reuters) - Hundreds of protesters, some wearing just thongs and plastic bull horns, marched through Pamplona on Tuesday to protest against the centuries-old running of the bulls, Spain's best known fiesta. Each morning during the week-long San Fermin festival, six bulls are set loose on an 825-metre course through the city's cobbled streets leading to the bull ring where they face a bullfighter's sword in an evening fight. Hundreds of adrenalin and alcohol-fuelled aficionados crowd the course to follow the tradition of running with the half tonne beasts. But protesters say tradition is not a justification. Local authorities do not allow protesters to march naked, as they did once in 2002. This year many wore only their underwear, and many had slogans written across their buttocks in temporary tattoos and painted mottos on each other in body paint. The protest's organisers -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) -- said 700 marched. Police said there were 500 to 600.
