08/31/2006 GOVERNMENT BANS FISHING AT KENYIR DAM TO PROTECT FISH NUMBERS!
Earlier this year, the Malaysian government had already repealed 80 fishing licences issued to local fishermen in a move to prevent the fish population of the dam from dwindling. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the ban would be enforced by the Central Terengganu Development Board. 'Our turtles are gradually becoming extinct and the same fate will befall exquisite species like the 'kelah' found in the dam if we don't take such a drastic move at once,' he said. Idris said the state government was now concentrating on efforts to increase the fish population of the dam by initiating fry rehabilitation at the site.

The former Bishop of Edinburgh Richard Holloway has criticised scientists who carry out animal research. During a debate on the ethics of cloning technology with Professor Ian Wilmut, the scientist who cloned Dolly the Sheep, the former Bishop said that he had become 'deeply troubled' by the ethics of using animals to test drugs and new treatments before they are used in humans. And he said that he objected to the use of animals in developing stem cell therapies.
08/29/2006 BEAR RELEASED IN PYRENEES DIES IN FALL!
Paris (Reuters) - A Slovenian brown bear, one of five released in the French Pyrenees earlier this year, has been found dead at the foot of a cliff after an apparent accident, authorities said on Sunday. The animals were let loose under a pan-European programme designed to help species in danger of extinction. The dead bear, named Palouma, was the first of the group to be released in the mountain range stradding the border between France and Spain.

The international battle against animal experimentation has reached Israel's Teva (TASE, Nasdaq: TEVA). Protestors were demonstrating outside company offices in Israel, Belgium and Britain, demanding that Teva sever its relations with Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), an animal experimentation firm that kills about 500 test subjects each day.
08/26/2006 FUR FLIES AS PETA TAKES EXCEPTION TO FASHION EXHIBIT!
A high-profile New York exhibition about British fashion has come under fire from an animal rights group for using a Burberry coat trimmed with fox fur. The campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has written to the Metropolitan Museum of Art demanding that it remove the gabardine trench coat from the popular Anglomania show, sponsored by Burberry. The museum said the coat would not be removed from the exhibition, which is due to come to an end on 4 September. PETA president Ms Newkirk said: 'Fox fur is not obtained from riders in pink coats, of course, so the Burberry part of the display seems to be a glaringly misplaced advertisement for a garment that can be purchased just up the street at the Burberry store.'

As many as 50 people have been diagnosed with a form of meningitis after eating raw or half-cooked Amazonian snails in Beijing restaurants, and according to reports by the Chinese media five patients are in a serious condition at different hospitals in the capital. The large, black snails are a popular dish in China and many people became ill after eating a snail dish called fushouluo at restaurants that specialize in Sichuan-style cooking.

In November 2002, an international campaign was begun against the German clothes chain Peek & Cloppenburg (P&C), with 4 outlets in Austria, to persuade the company to stop selling fur. A VGT spokesperson stated: 'It seems very likely, that a 4 year intensive campaign has come to a successful close. The largest Austrian fur retailers have stopped selling fur now. Activists will take stock and decide on new campaign targets for the (anti) fur campaign in due course.'
08/24/2006 MILLS UPSETS DAIRY COUNCIL!
Heather Mills is facing possible court action after slamming Britain's National Dairy Council in an interview. The former model and animal rights activist voiced her furious opinions in this month's (AUG06) Allergy magazine, accusing the organisation of trying to cover up the link between cancer and dairy products. Vegan Mills says, 'The dairy council is currently quoting one scientific review that shows no increased risk of breast cancer from eating dairy products, but they might even protect against it. In fact it clearly says that some dairy products may increase the risk of cancer. It simply ignored the bits it didn't like and misquoted the others.' The NDC are furious at Mills' potentially libellous claims, saying, 'We've contacted the magazine and they've agreed to print a strong letter in the next edition.'

Albufeira has been named on a 'black list' of cities which regularly run bullfighting events. The list has been drawn up by British animal rights organisation, The League Against Cruel Sports. A further 50 areas in Portugal have been named on the list, which is going to be made public to tourists and the British media, in order to urge people to boycott these areas as holiday destinations.
08/23/2006 BALKANS AT HIGH RISK FOR DEADLY H5N1 VIRUS!
The deadly H5N1 avian influenza virus, or bird flu, continues to threaten people, animals and economies in a growing number of countries, according to FAO, despite numerous successful efforts in several countries to contain the spread of the virus. 'In Europe, we believe the southern Balkan area and Caucasus are a high-risk region for H5N1,' said Juan Lubroth, head of FAO’s Emergency Prevention System for Transboundary Animal Diseases. 'The region is not only a prime resting ground for migratory bird species, but poultry production is mostly characterized by rural and household husbandry with little in terms of biosecurity and strong regulatory inspection.'
08/22/2006 FOUR CANADIAN SEALERS CONVICTED!
On March 28th, 2005, a day before the scheduled Canadian seal hunt was to start, four sealers decided to get a jump on their fellow sealers. They began to kill seals unaware that their activity was being recorded by high powered video and photographic equipment from the air. The four sealers were convicted on June 5, 2006, but the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans kept the convictions quiet until last week. The four Newfoundlanders convicted in a Corner Brook, Newfoundland, provincial court were Harlan Warren and Perry Warren, both of Margaree; Glen King, of Fox Roost; and Norman King, of Burnt Islands. Each man was fined $1,500. As well, Harlan Warren was fined $500 for failing to carry an at-sea observer. All of the illegally caught pelts were forfeited, at a value of $9,071.

Oslo - Norwegian whalers harpooned only half their quota of 1,052 minke whales in 2006, prompting hunt opponents to say that Norwegian demand for eating the meat had sunk. Oslo, which resumed commercial hunts of minke whales in 1993 despite an international moratorium, angered many nations this year by raising its quota to 1,052 - the highest in two decades and above recent years at about 750.
08/21/2006 MIDDLETOWN TEEN FACES ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGE!
Middletown, Ohio - A 13-year-old Middletown boy is facing an animal cruelty charge after police said he set fire to a cat that had wandered into his yard. Police said the boy was tired of the cat getting into the garbage, so on Tuesday night he hit it with a piece of wood, wrapped it in an alcohol-soaked tissue and set it on fire. The cat had to be euthanized, and the boy is charged with delinquency by way of cruelty to animals. He was released to his mother and ordered to appear in Butler County Juvenile Court next month.
08/20/2006 POLISH PARLIAMENT APPROVED A BAN ON GMO IN ANIMAL FEED!
In recent years Cargill, Smithfield Foods, Danish Crown and other multinational companies operating in Poland have imported large quantities of genetically modified soybeans from the U.S., Brazil and Argentina. On July 22, the Polish Sejm gave the companies two years to prove that use of GM animal feed is safe for humans, animals and the environment or face a total ban on further imports of GM feed into Poland.
08/19/2006 MORE THAN 700 ANIMALS DIE OF ANTHRAX IN CANADA!
Regina (CP) - An outbreak of anthrax has killed hundreds of farm animals in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and has ranchers in affected areas scrambling to make sure their livestock are protected from the naturally occurring but deadly bacterial disease. As of this week, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency had reported anthrax had been found on 17 farms in Manitoba and 118 animals had died. Hardest hit, however, was Saskatchewan and a large area to the east of Saskatoon, where 615 animals have died on 123 different farms since the outbreak was first noticed a month ago.
08/18/2006 FARM RAID LEAVES 4,000 CHICKENS DEAD!
South Australia's largest egg producer, Golden Eggs, is again in difficulty after the loss of 4,000 chickens at its Gawler factory near Adelaide. The chooks died after thieves cut the power to a temperature gauge on Tuesday night while trying to steal copper wire. Emily Vatkovic, from the RSPCA, says the offenders could be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has been lambasted by People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA), after 'carefully edited' footage of two piglets being slaughtered was broadcast on his TV show The F Word. When news of the proposed segment reached the animal rights group, it requested that the full horror of animal slaughter was shown to viewers. PETA spokesperson Anita Singh is disgusted that Ramsay and producers prefered to show viewers a sanitised version of events.

Japan has illegally taken $2 billion worth of southern bluefin tuna from waters surrounding Australia in the past 20 years, effectively killing the stock commercially, it is alleged. An independent international investigation into the high-end but at-risk fishery has found that Japanese fishers and their suppliers have caught up to three times Japan's quota each year and hidden it.

Five villagers, including a young boy, were killed in western India overnight when they jumped into a dry well to save an injured pigeon that had fallen in, authorities said. The boy was the first to jump in to rescue the bird and the others followed, trying to help him. The tragedy took place in Jhalabordi village, about 90 km from Ahmedabad, the main city in Gujarat state. 'Preliminary investigations show the deaths occurred due to suffocation,' said DG Jhalawadia, a local government official.

Chicago - The Lincoln Park Zoo has paid a $3,000 fine after federal authorities ruled it was to blame for a gorilla attack on a zookeeper and the deaths of several monkeys last year, officials said. The matter is considered closed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and there are no further investigations of the zoo, agency spokesman Darby Holladay said. Scrutiny began after the deaths of three elephants, two gorillas and a camel over the past two years - incidents that led animal rights groups to protest outside the zoo.

Animal Rights Sweden, the country's largest animal-rights organization with 36,000 members, has launched an attack against the organizers of the Gates of Metal festival over Norwegian black metal band Mayhem's use of animal parts during their performance at the event, which took place this past weekend. Animal Rights Sweden chairman Per-Anders Svärd Per-Anders Svärd wants promoters to disregard bloody bands like Mayhem. 'Book some vegetarian hardcore bands instead,' he says.

Elizabethtown, Pa. - A secretly shot videotape showed evidence of deteriorating cages and neglected birds at a Lancaster County egg farm, a prosecution expert testified Monday at the animal-cruelty trial of the farm's manager and chief executive. There were many birds, 'both live and dead, that were trapped on parts of the cages' at Esbenshade Farms last year, said Ian Duncan, a poultry science professor who recently retired from the University of Guelph in Ontario. Duncan took the stand Monday at the start of a trial for the chief executive and the manager of Esbenshade Farms in Mount Joy, one of Pennsylvania's largest egg producers. His testimony was entirely based on the 19-minute videotape that was shot by an animal-rights activist who worked undercover at the farm last year.

Several seafood industry associations yesterday blamed Chinese basketball star Yao Ming for supporting a campaign to cut the consumption of sharks' fin. The associations were quoted as saying in an open letter to Yao that, 'You made rash remarks, without investigating the issues first and without any deep understanding of the real situation. This directly affects the livelihood of the global fishery, seafood and catering industries.' Yao pledged last week never to eat sharks' fin soup as part of a high profile campaign to save several endangered species of shark from extinction.

A new study indicates that Robins and other birds are still suffering damage from exposure to DDT, despite the fact the pesticide was banned in the United States over three decades ago. New research shows that the area of the brain affected causes birds with high exposure levels to be unable to sing and protect territory. Researchers estimate that at least 15 to 20 generations of robins have been affected since the pesticide was first applied. The study provides further evidence that many of the toxic chemicals and pesticides we use today will continue to impact the environment and public health for generations to come.

The Food and Drug Administration asked Wednesday that manufacturers of Prozac and similar antidepressants change their labels to include information about an uncommon but life-threatening lung problem that can affect babies born to mothers who take the drugs during pregnancy. The agency also issued an alert about the possible risk of combining antidepressant medications with common migraine drugs called triptans, saying a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome might occur when the drugs are combined.

A second Chinese local government said it will launch a mass slaughter of dogs after 16 people died from rabies, state media reported Friday. Officials in the eastern city of Jining said Thursday they would kill all dogs within five kilometers (three miles) of villages where rabies was found, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The measure came in response to the deaths of 16 people from rabies in Jining in the last eight months, Xinhua said. It didn't say how many animals would be killed, but said the city had about 500,000 dogs.

In an interview to PETA India's youth arm, Gopinath, CEO of Global Inc, said, 'As humans, we need to have some morality and ethics to give back to those innocent creatures from which we have taken and exploited for our comforts and needs.' Strongly advocating vegetarianism, Gopinath said a vegetarian diet was low in fat and high in fibre which was essential for a healthier and longer life.

A county in south-west China has ordered all 50,546 dogs to be killed to fight a rabies outbreak which has killed three people, state media says. It has taken five days, but authorities in Mouding County in south-west China say they have killed almost all of the 50,000 dogs in the area. Some of the dogs were clubbed to death in the street as their owners watched. Only police and military dogs were spared.
08/03/2006 RHODE ISLAND STATE TO REQUIRE CAT CARETAKERS TO SPAY OR NEUTER THEIR FELINE COMPANIONS!
According to news sources, private animal shelters and municipal pounds in Rhode Island were forced to euthanize about 1,600 strays in 2004. Many of these animals were healthy and socialized and had to be euthanized simply because there aren't enough loving families to adopt them. When citizens and legislators realized that thousands of taxpayer dollars were spent dealing with problems created by the failure to spay and neuter, the state of Rhode Island has made it a legal requirement for cat caretakers who have not purchased a permit to spay or neuter their feline companions.

Dubai: An animal rights group official has gone to Jordan en route to Beirut to organise an international rescue team to evacuate animals. The creatures have been left stranded, hungry, and terrified after two weeks of Israeli attacks in Lebanon. Jason Baker, director of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), left his base in the Philippines which is the base of the group's Asia-Pacific operations on last Wednesday, the group said in a statement sent to Gulf News. In July last year, Baker rushed to New Orleans and led a team that saved animals abandoned in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, literally smashing down doors to reach dogs, cats and other animals. PETA's rescue teams were able to evacuate more than 300 animals and reunite many of them with their families.

Los Angeles (AFP) - A heat wave baking California since mid July has killed 25,000 cattle and 700,000 fowl, prompting emergency measures and crippling the sector for months to come, analysts said. Central California between Bakersfield and Redding is home to approximately 2.5 million cattle. Roughly 25,000 died because of the triple-digit temperatures since July 14, according to Andy Zylstra, president of the California Dairy Campaign.
