Animals are being used increasingly in medical and scientific experiments - one every 69 seconds in Victoria - despite a national code of practice requiring researchers to reduce their use. Latest available figures show 488,808 animals - 1339 a day, or more than 55 an hour - were used in experiments in Victoria in 2003. This is above the long-term average of 449,000 and significantly higher than the 1997 figure of 324,308.Nearly 75 per cent of animals used in 2003 in Victoria were killed during or at the end of research. About 15 per cent were involved in non-invasive observational studies.Animal use in research will come under fresh scrutiny after the Senate this week decided to launch an inquiry into animal welfare laws and as National Health and Medical Research Council animal ethics chairwoman Elizabeth Grant told The Age that some researchers had become "complacent" about considering alternatives to animals. An Age investigation has found that animals are still involved in seemingly painful and stressful experiments.

06/19/2005 COURT RULES THAT PETA SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SHOW VIDEO OF MONKEY ABUSE INSIDE COVANCE LAB!

For 11 months, an investigator from PETA US worked as a technician inside the Vienna, Virginia, Covance laboratory, where she documented workers who were striking, choking, taunting and deliberately tormenting terrified monkeys. Covance sought an injunction and was able to get a court order that temporarily prevents PETA Europe from showing the undercover footage from inside the Covance animal-testing facility in the United States. On 16 June, His Honour Judge Langan handed down judgement in the case for injunctive relief brought by Covance Laboratories against PETA Europe Ltd, dismissing the case and calling the arguments against granting an interim injunction "cumulative and, in my judgment, overwhelming". Furthermore, PETA Europe was awarded £50,000 on account of its costs. The court was presented with the 28-minute video which resulted from the investigation, causing Judge Langan to comment on the "rough manner in which the animals handled and the bleakness of the surroundings in which they are kept", matters which, he said, "cry out for explanation". The video also shows multiple violations of the US Animal Welfare Act, which PETA US have detailed in a 272-page complaint to the US Department of Agriculture. PETA US is also challenging Covance, which is seeking removal of the video footage from the group's Web site, in the courts in the US.

Machipongo, Va. - Following an intense 13-year animal advocacy campaign launched by United Poultry Concerns (UPC) in 1992, the US egg industry trade group, United Egg Producers, has issued a ban on forcing hens to drop their feathers and cease laying eggs by going without food in the practice known as forced molting - "reversing a practice followed for more than 100 years," according to the agribusiness journal Feedstuffs on May 9, 2005.Faced with mounting criticism, United Egg Producers came up with a low-protein "molt diet" to replace food deprivation. 06/05/2005 SCANDAL OF MINK FARMS IN EUROPE!

Foxes and mink are being pitilessly gassed, strangled and beaten to death - just so their furs can be sold in the High Street. The sickening scenes have been caught on camera by undercover investigator Martin Balluch, 40, from PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He spent two years exposing the brutal treatment the animals endure in Scandinavian fur farms. He said: "There are 150,000 animals in the fur farms of Sweden and Finland but they are being kept in totally inhumane conditions. I saw animals crushed so tightly in their cages they could barely turn around. The stench of dead rotting animals and excrement was appalling."His horrific pictures, some too distressing for us to publish, showed piles of skinned animals being burned in funeral pyres and fox and mink gnawing at the bars of their cage in a desperate bid to escape. It comes just three weeks after The People exposed the horrific raccoon fur trade in China.Sean Gifford from PETA said: "Fur farming is illegal in the UK because of its obvious cruelty. But fur is still being imported from Scandinavia where animals lead miserable lives and endure agonising deaths."Martin and his team from Austria hid in freezing forests, endured beatings and death threats from thuggish farmers, not to mention police raids and imprisonment as they filmed 76 fur farms in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway.

Since 2004 migrating bird species, including threatened population such as Siberian Crane, Sarus Crane, Black Necked Stork, Sociable Lapwing, Pallas' Fish Eagle, Marshall's Iora and the Greater Adjutant have ceased to use the wetlands as a staging area in winter. It is essential that measures are taken to restore the wetlands to their former state as soon as possible and that this habitat is maintained as a World Heritage and Ramsar site of global importance.
