03/25/2022 World Day for the End of Fishing

World Day for the End of Fishing is celebrated on March 26 with the aim of drawing attention to the welfare of marine animals. "They are sensitive and intelligent beings with their own purpose in life that affects human life and our survival on the planet," appeals the Animal Friends Croatia. They will mark this date by sharing and informing the public with shocking information and data from Croatia. In Croatia, a big problem is fishing with trawlers, due to their indiscrimination. Trawlers fish and kill all marine animals that get in their way: crabs, shellfish, thorns and cephalopods, and like bulldozers devastate the entire seabed, causing damage on a huge scale. If we'd stop eating fish and other marine animals, we would certainly influence on banning cruel fishing practices, increase marine biodiversity and reduce the negative effects of climate change.

03/22/2022 The project of spaying dogs continued

Four years ago, by order of the Minister of Agriculture, the project of spaying dogs in Roma settlements of Međimurje County began, which was financed by the Ministry. By the end of 2018, 1,400 dogs were spayed. After that, in the next three years, the Shelter from Cakovec rescued and neutered another 300 dogs. Animal Friends Croatia explains that many residents of the settlement did not give dogs, so in 2018 only those dogs that the residents wanted to hand over were neutered, although the Order determined the castration of all dogs in the area. When the project was finally resumed at the end of last year, Shelter faced the need to care for three times more dogs than expected. It is commendable that the Veterinary Inspection has resumed supervision. The goal is for all dogs to be neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and then returned or put in the shelter. The Veterinary Inspection has announced that it will do the same in other Roma settlements to make sure that every dog is taken care of.

03/01/2022 EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT RESOLVES TO FIGHT CANCER BY PROMOTING A PLANT-BASED DIET

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on combating cancer that calls on the European Union (EU) member states to promote a healthy, plant-based diet and eating less meat to reduce cancer risks. Currently, cancer is Europe’s second-largest killer—next to cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke—with 1.3 million deaths each year. There are also currently 3.5 million diagnosed cases each year, and that number is projected to increase to more than 4.3 million cases by 2035. The adopted resolution is part of a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to prevent cancer and follows the launch of the EU’s Beating Cancer Plan in 2021. Among many other measures, the resolution emphasizes increased consumption of plant foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes instead of meat, ultra-processed products, and products high in sugar, salt, and fat. EU member states are being urged to help consumers make informed, healthy, and sustainable food choices. This involves adopting a mandatory and harmonized EU nutrition label and making fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables, pulses, legumes, and whole grains more affordable and accessible. The resolution also calls for comprehensive public campaigns about nutrition and for nutrition counseling to be available through the primary healthcare sector. (vegnews.com)
