12/13/03 Why Veg?
In cooperation with FARM Sabina Fund (www.farmusa.org), Animal Friends is continuing their project "Why Veg?"
This project started on October 1, World Vegetarian Day, with information stands, an information billboard, and with handing out leaflets and small packages of vegan food, and it continued with projections in secondary schools and colleges such as Faculty of Political Science (November 5) and Economy Program Secondary School (November 18, December 5). After the projections, very interesting debates about vegetarianism, factory farming, egg and milk industry, animal experimentation and fur farms took place.
Debates and projections about horrors of animals in factory farming will continue in the future as well, and the first one is going to happen on Saturday, December 13, in net club Mama, Preradoviceva ulica 18, which will start with the projection of documentary "(K)ein herz für Lucie" about the pig industry in Austria, taped by Austrian animal rights organization Verein Gegen Tierfabriken.
Female frequenter of the Center for Women Studies also took part in the organization of this projection.
On April 1, 1999, FARM announced establishment of the Sabina Fund to fund grassroots projects promoting a plant-based diet and publicizing the devastating impacts of animal agriculture. The Fund honors the memory of FARM President Alex Hershaft's mother, Sabina, who passed away on February 14, 1996.
FARM (Farm Animal Reform Movement) is a national educational organization advocating a plant-based diet and humane treatment of farmed animals through eight grassroots programs. It operates from the nation's capital with a staff of eight, through a grass-roots network of more than one thousand activists in all 50 states and several Canadian provinces.
The project of Animal Friends about promotion of vegetarianism/veganism is one of 10 selected projects. The project "Why Veg?" will last until August 2004.
