04/29/2021 Major Food Site Epicurious Removes Beef From Recipes
Major food website Epicurious is removing all recipes featuring beef to ‘encourage more sustainable cooking’. The publication says the red meat, notorious for its environmental impact, will no longer feature on its website, newsletters, or Instagram feed. It announced the move in a recent blog post entitled The Planet on the Plate: Why Epicurious Left Beef Behind. “We know that some people might assume that this decision signals some sort of vendetta against cows—or the people who eat them,” Epicurious wrote. “But this decision was not made because we hate hamburgers (we don’t!). Instead, our shift is solely about sustainability, about not giving airtime to one of the world’s worst climate offenders.” The company then concluded: “We think of this decision as not anti-beef but rather pro-planet.” (plantbasednews.org)
04/27/2021 UK Government Faces Legal Challenge Over Factory Farming
The UK government is facing a legal challenge over factory farming over pandemic and climate concerns. A group of campaigners has created a legal team, spearheaded by human rights lawyer Michael Mansfield QC. Non-profit Humane Being is behind the Scrap Factory Farming campaign – which has already raised £25,000 for legal proceedings to ban factory farming in the UK. It aims to raise a further £35,000 and has set up a crowdfunding page. Last year, lawyers acting for Humane Being wrote to the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). It queried the government’s plans regarding factory farming and related threats to human health. However, the organization says Defra’s response ‘played down’ the issues linked to factory farming. Now, a last chance ‘letter before action’ has been issued to Defra today. If Humane Being is unsatisfied with the response, the challenge may proceed to court. (plantbasednews.org)

The documentary "Seaspiracy" provokes very violent reactions because it reveals that commercial fishing and fishing nets are responsible for much of the plastic waste in the oceans, killing more than 300,000 accidentally caught whales and dolphins a year and therefore completely emptying the oceans by 2048. The film’s authors are telling viewers that the best thing we can do to prevent this is to stop eating fish.

Leonardo Dicaprio is joining animal-free ice cream brand Perfect Day. The academy award-winning actor turned environmentalist has been welcomed to the company’s Sustainability and Health Advisory Council. DiCaprio, who has also invested in plant-based brand Beyond Meat, said: “A full-fledged response to climate change must bring innovation to all aspects of our daily lives. [This] includes the foods we consume. “Perfect Day’s forward-looking vision offers a new model for reducing the impact that our diets have on the planet. “I’m pleased to be part of their advisory council and work together to support our shared urgent environmental mission.” (plantbasednews.org)

Save Ralph, a star-studded short film about animal cruelty produced in partnership with Humane Society International is now available to watch for free. Written and directed by Spencer Susser, the stop-motion short stars MCU stars Taika Waititi, comedian Ricky Gervais, Zac Efron and many others. Using a documentary-style format, Save Ralph is centered around the titular rabbit who goes through his daily routine as a "tester" in a lab. Ralph explains that he is blind in his right eye, deaf in one ear, and has chemical burns on his back due to testing cosmetic products such as eyeliner, shampoo, and sunscreen. Though, Ralph remains relatively upbeat and positive about his job, which contrasts directly with the horrors he faces every day. The film ends with the poignant message superimposed, "No animal should suffer and die in the name of beauty." (screenrant.com)

Cruelty Free International announces that cosmetics and haircare giant Garnier is joining the growing Leaping Bunny family. The global beauty brand, ranked as one of the world’s top ten most valuable cosmetics companies, has been approved under the Leaping Bunny programme marking a significant milestone in the fight against cosmetics animal testing. For Garnier, this was a case of securing evidence from more than 500 suppliers, who source over 3,000 different ingredients for the brand, from across the world. For many months, Garnier and Cruelty Free International have worked together to secure this evidence and ensure that every product within Garnier’s global portfolio can officially display the Leaping Bunny logo. Leaping Bunny requires brands to forensically investigate their entire supply chain, including all raw material and individual ingredients, for any cases of animal testing. 04/08/2021 Starbucks Faces Oat Milk Shortages Across US As Demand Soars
Coffee giant Starbucks is facing an oat milk shortage across the US due to ‘high demand’. The chain first trialed the plant milk, created by Oatly, in 1,300 US stores last year. Following its success, it was then rolled out nationwide last month. A Starbucks spokesperson told CNN Business: “Due to high demand, some customers may experience a temporary shortage of oat milk at their store.” The spokesperson added that oat milk will be back on the menu ‘soon’ – but didn’t provide a specific time frame. The push for non-dairy milk is part of the company’s Pathway to a Planet Positive Future initiative. It seeks to slash carbon emissions, water, and waste by 50 percent in the next decade. “Our Planet Positive initiatives have a central role in our long-term business strategy, and directly address what our customers are asking for,” said Kevin Johnson, Starbucks chief executive officer. “We are moving toward a more circular economy, and we are doing so in a very intentional, transparent, and accountable way.” (plantbasednews.org)

As part of their campaign ‘No Animal Left Behind’, Eurogroup for Animals released their first demand today: Good Health. Animal welfare laws should ensure that animals are healthy, fit and whole. Yet, billions live in preventable pain every day, breathless, injured, diseased, in misery. Animals deserve to feel strong and full of life, to want to run and swim and peck and play. It’s not enough to exist; they should thrive. They call on the EU Commission to commit to ambitiously revise the EU animal welfare legislation. They demand that no animal should be deliberately mutilated: its tail or beak chopped short; its body so overstretched it cannot stand straight. Yet, painful injuries, deformities and fractures are commonly seen in broiler chickens: They often go untreated. Fish are increasingly farmed for food, but the lack of legal protection has meant that they often suffer greatly. Farmed fish are often kept in overcrowded cages, are handled regularly, and are in the process of being bred for growth over any other function, all of which cause considerable stress and health issues. For good health, fish need space and clean water so that they can swim freely, perform natural behaviors, and avoid disease and injuries.
