Animal Friends and Algoritam have the honor to announce the arrival of a world-acclaimed writer and vegan

- Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, the world-acclaimed writer from New Zealand visits Croatia in July this year!

Apart from spending a vacation at the Adriatic with his family, Mr. Masson will hold a lecture and sign his book When Elephants Weep, which in 2004 was published in Algoritam's Facta library.

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson has a Ph.D. in Sanskrit from Harvard University. He was Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Toronto and he briefly lectured at the Brown University, the University of Michigan and the Univeristy of California. At the university he trained as a Freudian analyst graduating as a full member of the International Psycho-Analytical Association. He was also Project Director of the Sigmund Freud Archives for some time. Today he works at the Faculty of Arts at the New Zealand's University of Auckland.

Masson turns to animals, particularly the issue of emotional life of animals, when in 1995 he published When Elephants Weep, an international best seller translated into 20 languages, followed by the equally popular Dogs Never Lie About Love.

When Elephants Weep is one of the rare books about the issue of animals' emotional lives and those which with simple and suggestive vocabulary manage to completely change our perception of the beings with whom – mostly at their loss – we share this world.

The author will sign this book in Algoritam bookshops in:

Besides the book signing, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson will also hold a lecture titled "The Face on Your Plate: Do Animals Have Feelings?" on July 9, at 6:30 P.M. in the Cultural Informative Centar (KIC), Preradoviceva 5, in Zagreb. This is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all interested to listen to what this renowned and world-acclaimed writer and psychologist has to say.

Following the publication of those two books he has since published six more books about animals, examining the emotions of particular species. Writing about the emotional world of farm animals in The Pig Who Sang to the Moon turned Masson into a vegan. He has signed a contract with W.W. Norton to write a book about vegetarianism (Veganism) called The Face on Your Plate.

Masson believes that in 500 years (maybe less) people will look back on us and wonder about many things. No doubt behavior we consider normal today will inspire horror in our more enlightened successors. In addition he says, "I am completely opposed to any form of animal exploitation, including animal experimentation, keeping animals in zoos or in circuses, (indeed any form of captivity for animals), the use of leather, fur, wool and silk. I also have begun to wonder whether any domesticated animal can lead an ideal life in the company of humans."

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson lives with his family in New Zealand. His wife Leila, his five-year-old son Manu and ten-year-old son Ilan are vegetarians.

We invite the general public to meet this exceptional writer and man, and to listen to his lecture and bring the copy of their book in one of Algoritam bookshops.
