One of the cruelest companies has made a big step towards a fur-free future

After years of protests, fierce online actions, celebrity campaigns and legal struggles that have been led by PETA, the world’s largest animal rights organization, against one of Canada’s most notorious fashion brands Canada Goose, the company has finally agreed to stop procuring new fur from hunters. It announced that as of the end of this year it will stop buying fur from hunters, and as of the end of 2022, it plans to stop using new coyote fur on all its products but will continue to use recycled fur.

"This decision represents only a partial victory for the animals, but it will mean the lives of thousands of intelligent wild animals similar to dogs. Coyotes' and wolves' paws or other body parts are pierced by serrated steel traps. They suffer for hours and days before dying in agony of starvation, dehydration, predator attacks, or being killed by hunters. Cases of trapped mothers who, in a desperate attempt to return to their babies, bite off their own leg to free themselves have been documented. It is terrible that thousands of innocent animals go through all these horrors because of the furry detail on the hoods of this infamous company", say the Animal Friends Croatia association.

Fashion company Canada Goose has begun work in recent years to reduce its carbon footprint and increase sustainability. Animal Friends Croatia explain that the logical step is to throw out fur. Namely, it takes as much as 60 times more energy to produce fur coats from animals than to produce faux fur. The fur processing process endangers workers and the environment, which includes toxicity to aquatic organisms as well as air pollution, and improper waste management is a common cause of water contamination near such farms.

The next goal of animal welfare associations is for the company to stop using feathers, which is why the geese from the Canada Goose supply chain continue to suffer terribly. “The process of plucking feathers is extremely painful and is repeated four or five times during a goose’s life. After the last plucking, the geese are left for five weeks to grow as many feathers as possible and then sent through a machine that plucks their longest feathers. Then they drive them in crowded cages to the slaughterhouse, where they watch in horror as nervous workers grab other birds by the neck, stun them, hang them by the legs and cut their throats, until it's their turn,” Animal Friends Croatia describes the horror that geese go through for fashion.

They urge everyone not to buy products that contain fur, leather, feathers and silk. Recently, Israel became the first country to pass a ban on the sale of fur, and the sale and import of fur was also banned by: the largest Brazilian city of São Paulo, the US state of California and the US cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley and West Hollywood. Fur was told NO by big names in the fashion world, proving that the future of fashion is completely cruelty-free: Adidas, Burberry, Gucci, Versace, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo, Giorgio Armani and many others.
