Animal Friends in collaboration with Green Action celebrated Earth Day by publishing an eco brochure

On April 22, Earth Day is celebrated in more than 150 countries around the world. The current situation on Earth is alarming more than ever before because, according to the great number of renowned international studies, the breeding of animals for food is by far the biggest contributor to the pollution of the planet.

On this occasion, Animal Friends have published an eco brochure "Food and Ecology" that will be presented on Saturday April 23, 2016 from 12:30 P.M. at the Green Action premises (Frankopanska 1, Zagreb). The presentation will be attended by: Mirela Holy, a sustainable development proponent, Jadranka Boban Pejic and Zlatko Pejic from "Makronova" educational institution for adults, Bernard Ivcic, Green Action association president, Marija Geiger Zeman, PhD and Zdenko Zeman PhD, from Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences. A short presentation will be followed by refreshments and all attendees will be able to take a free copy of the brochure.

"Food and ecology" is intended for everyone who has an opportunity to spread information from it and use it for further education. The brochure is a professional publication full of relevant information, and accessible to the general public. It explains the connection between growing food for human consumption with world hunger, climate change, water consumption, deforestation and many other aspects of environmental pollution by providing specific guidelines for sustainable life and ecological nutrition principles.

The brochure will be delivered to all relevant institutions, associations and textbook publishers in Croatia in order to warn of the burning issues of connection between nutrition and ecology.

With current eating habits around the world, we are endangering ourselves, our children and the entire human race as well as all other known forms of life.

In 2006, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced that the livestock sector affects climate changes more than the entire world's traffic. In addition, 53 tons of animal excrement is generated every second on farms in the United States only, and it poisons the environment. Swiss Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) concluded that annual production of 125 million tons of nitrogen fertilizer used in livestock breeding releases 800 million tons of carbon dioxide worldwide.

A third of the planet's surface is gradually turning into deserts, caused by drainage and soil pollution due to the livestock industry. Cattle farms are causing 85% of total nitrogen emissions in the form of ammonia, which is a major cause of acid rains, and thus the death of the forests. The Dutch Institute for Health therefore states that the ammonia produced by livestock breeding causes more harm than all the world factories combined.

Livestock breeding is directly responsible for the deforestation of more than one hundred million hectares of forest to provide new areas for grazing of animals bred for food. Even 88% of the destroyed Amazon rainforest is a direct result of conversion of land to new pastures.

It is possible to think about why these issues are persistently being kept under wraps, even when the preservation of all life on Earth is at stake. But, once we realize that more than 1,000 environmental activists engaged in these issues have been executed over the course of the past 20 years, it is clear that global corporations are not willing to jeopardize their profits even at the cost of extermination of humanity and all life on Earth.

The most direct, the most effective, as well the easiest way each individual can help preserve the environment is to stop buying animal origin products, that is to stop financing the industry that destroys the only home we have - Planet Earth.
