At the time when the world is faced with many challenges and crises, from climate change and deforestation to biodiversity loss, it is becoming ever clearer how crucial it is for all individuals to take carefully thought-out decisions which might help mitigate the damage that has already been done. It is a well-known fact that the production of animal-based food has the most adverse impact on the environment across the globe. Opting for plant-based food and products is the best way for an individual to reduce their negative impact on the environment and climate change, something passers-by in Jelačić Square had an opportunity to find out at the event organised by Animal Friends Croatia.
The central square was imbued with the smells of plant-based meat schnitzels, falafel, burgers and delicious sausages made with a mushroom base. The degustation was a pleasant surprise for many passers-by who also had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of cakes made with plant-based milk. The recipes for all dishes offered at the degustation are freely available in the online cookbook “Choose Plant-Based, Eat Delicious Food” published by Animal Friends Croatia in cooperation with Lidl.
Passers-by who guessed correctly by how much carbon footprint is lowered for specific plant-based dishes won a suitable award. For example, by using plant-based minced meat in recipes such as meat pies, sarma or stuffed peppers, we can reduce the carbon footprint by 93%.
The cookbook published on the occasion of the World Vegan Day containing twenty recipes aspires to invite you on a journey towards sustainable living, better health, and the conservation of our beautiful planet. Each of the recipes is accompanied by the percentage of by how much the carbon footprint is reduced in the vegan version of the dish. The cookbook also has different fun facts, advice, and instructions how to easily make any dish vegan and increase the use of plant-based ingredients in the kitchen. Anyone wishing to find inspiration for new culinary adventures and discovering new tastes is encouraged to peruse the cookbook for free.
Animal Friends Croatia note that, apart from mitigating the climate crisis, research and compelling evidence show that plant-based food improves health significantly, resulting in lower diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity rates. Thus, by opting for plant-based food and products, we also save lives. “The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that approximately 92.2 billion land animals are killed every year for human consumption, causing enormous damage to animals and the environment. By choosing plant-based food, we choose a sustainable future and ensure our survival on the planet. Each meal can make a difference,” the group states.
“The step towards reducing the consumption of animal-based products is a step forward, for our own health but also for the environment and the animals. It is encouraging that, apart from a variety of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, legumes, cereal, nuts and seeds, we also have plant-based meat in various shapes and forms such as schnitzel, burgers, kebabs, cold cuts, sausages, etc. together with an increasing number of different plant-based dairy products such as milk, cheeses, yoghurt and cream. It is worth doing some research and finding whatever suits your taste and needs,” Animal Friends Croatia believe.
