Citizens are appealed for the responsible guardianship and adoption of abandoned animals

-Printed educational flyer "Care for a dog;" importance of microchipping of all the dogs by June 13

Adoption of an abandoned dog or cat, which seeks salvation and a home in which it will be safe from hunger, thirst, bad weather, traffic, poisoning and abuse, is a noble deed. People who adopt can be informed in advance about the dog's character and they are given spayed and neutered and vaccinated dogs to their care, and through their good deed they send a clear message that animals should be adopted and not bought.

Although the Animal Protection Act and the other relevant laws require that people should be conscientious and responsible towards animals, which depend on them for their whole life, abandoning of animals is a big problem in the whole of Croatia.

Therefore the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, in collaboration with the Institution of the Zoo of the City of Zagreb – Shelter for abandoned animals in Dumovec and Animal Friends have released the educational flyer called "Care for a dog," which will be distributed throughout the whole country, and which gives useful information about the right way of coexistence of people and dogs, about vaccination, microchipping, spaying/neutering, animal protection, and the importance of animal shelters and adoption programs.

The flyer will be presented by Sinisa Mandek, dr. med. vet. from the Veterinary Administration at the public event "Adopting is Cool," organized by the City Office for Agriculture and Forestry of the city of Zagreb and the Shelter for abandoned animals in Dumovec, in collaboration with Animal Friends, on May 7, 2011 at 11 A.M. on Trg bana Jelacica in Zagreb.

On the information stalls, which will be put up from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M., people will be able to get some useful information related to companion animals and adoption, buy food for dogs and cats at the promotional price, and spend some time with the dogs which are waiting for their new home.

The flyer also draws attention to the obligatory microchipping, regulated by the Rule book of dogs' tagging, since June 13, 2011 is the deadline for the microchipping of all the dogs in Croatia. Those who do not obey this legal regulation can be fined from 2,000 to 6,000 kuna.

A microchip is a small capsule as big as a grain of rice, made of stable material safe for dogs. It contains a unique identification number, which can be read by a bar code reader, and which, entered in a secure database, gives information about the guardian and the animal.

Microchipping is done only once and it is possible to do it in any veterinary clinic at the price of about 90,00 kuna. It is of great importance in cases of looking for a guardian of a stray dog and preventing a person from abandoning an animal.
