10/07/24 Neutering is the Best Way to Control Pet Reproduction
As of this year, if you do not neuter your pet or if you abandon it, you may end up in prison
- 19/10/ 2024, Jelaèiæ Square, 10am: “Adopting is Fun” – action for dog and cat neutering
A new action “Adopting is Fun,” focussing on reducing uncontrolled pet reproduction, will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, 10am-2pm at Zagreb central square of Ban Josip Jelaèiæ. The event is organised by the Zagreb City Council and City Animal Shelter, also joined by Animal Friends Croatia who will provide visitors with useful information on the importance of dog and on pet neutering as a means of preventing irresponsible pet owners from abandoning their unwanted litters.
“Pet abandonment is a criminal offence as of this year, so those who avoid their legal obligation of controlling cat and dog reproduction, or who abandon their pet, might end up in prison for up to one year. Instead of abandoning them, pet owners can help animals by neutering them, as the most important reproduction control tool, and by responsible adoption,” emphasised Animal Friends Croatia.
Although all pet owners are obliged to control their pets’ reproduction by the Animal Protection Act, some owners ignore this obligation. In seven years, one cat and its offspring can produce 420,000 kittens, while a female dog and its offspring can produce 67,000 puppies. Even more reason to consider neutering the most effective method of cat and dog reproduction control, as well as an act of responsible pet ownership.
“It is imperative for local self-government units to implement dog micro-chipping by household rounds stipulated by legal provisions, (co)finance owned dogs and cats, and educate the public on responsible animal care,” explained Animal Friends Croatia. By launching the “Adopting is Fun” action, they wish to encourage citizens to neuter animals in their care.
Besides being a method of controlling pet reproduction, neutering is beneficial for animals in multiple ways: it prevents pyometra as well as ovarian and uterine tumours; it significantly reduces tumour growth in mammary glands, and transmission of viral infections; it extends life… In addition, animals do not run away from home, they do not fight amongst themselves, there are no bite wounds, abscesses or territory marking.
As a result of irresponsible behaviour by pet owners who do not neuter their pets but discard unwanted litters, the Dumovec Shelter homes many cats and dogs in need of a permanent home. The first ten citizens who adopt a cat or a dog from the Shelter on the “Adopting is Fun” action day or shortly thereafter will receive a welcome gift pack for their pet upon its arrival at their new home.
On the occasion, Animal Friends of Croatia invite the public not to buy animals but to adopt a pet, and to responsibly care for cats and dogs by neutering them, providing them with good general and veterinary care throughout their life.
