Animal Friends' invitation for vegetarianism: join us for the Twentieth Anniversary of Global Meatout Day!

This March, caring people from 25 countries from all over the world will welcome Spring by asking their friends and neighbors to "kick the meat habit" on the first day of Spring and explore a wholesome, nonviolent plant-based diet and its advantages by awakening their conscience and responsibilty towards their health and envirnoment.

Animal Friends will take part in Meatout Day in Zagreb and other cities where they have their branches. Activists from Zagreb will, on Saturday, March 19, 2005, in Gajeva ulica in front of Dubrovnik hotel have a steakout on which they will provide their fellow townsmen with the information about vegetarianism in words and picture. At noon the birthday Meatout cake will be served together with other vegan delicacies.

Animal Friends will also with similar happenings mark this day in their branches in Varazdin, Krizevci, Sisak, Rijeka, Split, Osijek, Zadar, and Umag.

The global Meatout observances are coordinated by FARM, a U.S. nonprofit public-interest organization, and is happening for the 20th year already. Its message will be carried to millions all over the world. Many mayors are expected to issue Meatout proclamations promoting consumption of fruits and vegetables and celebrities like Joaquin Phoenix, James Cromwell, and Mary Tyler-Moore will also join them.

Meatout draws massive support from consumer, environmental, and animal protection advocates, as well as from public officials, health care providers, meatless food manufacturers and retailers, educators, and the mass media. They believe that consumers are entitled to a respite from and a response to the relentless barrage of meat industry propaganda in schools, in the media, and in the streets and to raise their voice for better and healthier life of all people by not harming animals or environment.

Thus, for instance, some federal states legislatures have recommended vegetarian options for school children, whilst mainstream health advocacy organizations are encouraging increased consumption of vegetables and fruits. On the other hand, more and more food manufacturers are marketing meat and dairy replacement products, and supermarkets are carrying a growing variety of these products. Even infamous McDonald's is launching veggie burgers in its outlets! Suitably planned vegetarian diet is healthy, it has nutritional value and it helps in preventing of certain diseases - the main killers of our modern world: heart disease, stroke, various cancers, diabetes, etc.

On Tuesday, March 22, 2005, on the World Water Protection Day, Animal Friends will in cyber club Mama in Preradoviceva ulica 18, starting at 7 P.M., hold a lecture "Meat Versus Water" with a video projection. The word will be about the hazards of meat industry on the waters on our planet because if we look at the facts, 50% of total world water consumption goes to the mass production of cattle and the amount of water needed for the production of 10 kilos of steak equals to amount of water that one average family consums in a whole year.

Animal Freinds invites all citizens of Croatia to join up Global Meatout Day. Let us do it for the animals, for our planet, and for ourselves!
